So I just bought a new HDTV and I'm looking to get a next-gen console for it. Right now I'm completely torn between the two. I've played both at friends' houses and I'm not sure which would work better for me.
I'm not terribly interested in "exclusives" considering most titles eventually come out for both and the ones I want to play are on both already (Fallout 3, Assasins Creed, Street Fighter, Skate etc). I don't care about Halo, but loved MGS2.
I guess what it is coming down to is hardware and DLC. I just read an article on Gizmodo that claims Xbox 360s have a 50% failure rate where PS3 has 10%. I know its under warranty but that's a big concern if true (http://gizmodo.com/5339915/survey-xbox-360-failure-rate-is-over-50-people-dont-care). I have friends who are on 4th and 5th xboxes.
So if anyone has any sage wisdom or personal experience with either good or bad that'd be awesome.

I've had my XBOX since the day it came out and it hasn't failed .... definitely shouldn't be a deciding factor. If exclusives make no difference, then XBOX is the way to go. Every multi-platform game is rated higher for MS's system, and the controller is one of the best in console history. Loving MGS2 is redundant b/c the next-gen Metal Gear game is nothing like it at all. All DLC comes to XBOX Live first ... and usually weeks/months before. If you want a Blu-ray player, too, then Ps3 is the obvious choice.
P.S. XBOX is dropping in price next week.

I searched and there wasn't anything past '06 that had any good info. Especially with the new slim and price drops etc.
But yeah, I've heard the Metal Gear series has fallen on hard times since MGS2
Also does anyone know about this "Jasper" chip in the 360? What models is it in?

That's false both 3 and 4 have metacritc scores of 90+ but anyways. Get a 360 if you plan on playing online.

I guess hard times is the wrong word. I heard the story in MGS4 was way too long in the tooth and the 3rd one (in the jungle) I couldn't play for more than a few hours, I hated having to hide for 5 minutes for a sentry to move. It didn't live up to the first two.

MGS2 was like the crapiest one out of all of them...
MGS>MGS3>MGS4>metal gear 1&2 (NES)>>>MGS2
ha ok maybe a little over exaggerated, i just didnt enjoy MGS2 at all and i do admit that unless you are pretty framiliar with the series, MGS4's story line can be pretty confusing lol...but the game was an extrodinary conclusion to the series IMO
but id say go with the ps3, just cause im a fanboy and had ps since the first one ha

I have both. I use both. I do not game very often, but I do occasionally.
The Xbox 360 is a beast at streaming media. I stream stuff to my Xbox ALL the time and it is wonderful. Also, the Netflix streaming is amazing.
That being said, the PS3 is a beast. It has Blu Ray. For that reason alone, if I had to choose between the two, I'd probably choose PS3. It can stream media as well, however, I've found the PS3's wireless hardware (which, the Xbox doesn't have out of the box at all) is lacking and most of the time cannot keep up with streaming media.
The Xbox 360 failure rate is way down because of the new chips. It's still not perfect, but it is much much better. Besides, getting it fixed is pretty easy, except for the waiting game.
For games I can't be of too much help. Most of the games I play are on both consoles. I typically will pick Xbox 360 because more of my friends have an Xbox so I can play them on Live.
The PS3 uses bluetooth which is probably the dumbest idea ever.
If it comes down to just hardware, I'd probably lean more towards the PS3 simply for blu-ray support.

If I were you, I would wait until September and buy a PS3 slim. You can't beat $300 for a blu-ray player and a sweet gaming machine. I have a PS3 and I play online all the time. There are plenty of people on every game that I've played, and it is almost always lag-free. I would not want to pay to play online when the experience is the same for free.
P.S. MGS4 got a 10/10 on IGN and a 94 on Metacritic. It is one of the best games on this generation of consoles. Buy it when you get your PS3 slim.

A Slim PS3 is coming out September first. 120gb, 300$, and half as big as the original.
360 is $300 for a pro model (I think) which is the console, and a 60gb harddrive.
You have to install a lot of the games on your ps3 before you can play them, but on the 360 you have to update your console.
360 has better online play and features, but it costs money.
PS3 doesn't have a region lock on it so you can import games and play them flawlessly.
360 can be modded to play burned games.
Ps3 cannot play PS2 games
360 can play Xbox games
Go for either one.

There isn't even a comparison, as a GAME system (not counting Blu Ray), XBOX 360 is far superior. The games are much better. Their online play is amazing. It is overall a much better system. There are a few great games for PS3. Damn I want Blu Ray tho.

Xbox 360 -
Live - Hugely fun with friends and no connection problems and faults (I know you have to pay for it but £40 a year is cheap for such a great experience)
Downloadable content - new and old arcade games, free trailers and demo's (which download quick despite my shitty internet), avatar creator, easy and fun to have parties on games, twitter, facebook and last.fm will be put on for free soon.
Games - Every game i have bought (20+) have been great and worked great with the console plus free dlc for most games.
Reliability - Well all I can say is I have had mine for 1 year+ and I play it on a daily basis and I haven't a single fault with it.

They're pretty much the same thing games-wise, so if you don't care about exclusives then I say get a PS3 for, IMO, the superior controller (I've never liked any of the Xbox's controllers, from the one the original launched with until now) and Blu-Ray. You won't miss DVDs.
Ps3 cannot play PS2 games
Older PS3s can. Are they fixing this for the slim, anyway, or are they going to try and continue milking more PS2 money?

Why would you pay for a SNES when you can download + emulate all the games for free. You can even get a USB adapter or just mod the original controller yourself to use it with your PC and whatnot.
Underground-Gamer and maybe a few extra controllers is really all anyone needs to play older games.

I have both, and it kind of just depends what you really want with the system.. Obviously if you want blu-ray then the PS3 is the way to go.. For me personally though I play a lot of games, and if it comes to getting the same game for either the 360 or the PS3, then I always go with the 360.. Xbox Live is awesome, and the stuff that they're doing with it now and with future dashboard/system updates are going to be pretty tight.. The netflix streaming is amazing, and if you're into the whole social networking thing this fall they're partnering with facebook and twitter.. Plus I know you said you weren't that big into exclusives, and that you liked Metal Gear.. well Microsoft partnered with konami and the next installment in the franchise is also going to be coming to the 360 next year I believe, unless it gets delayed.. it's called Metal Gear Solid: Rising..
Also I know you didn't mention anything about the Wii, but next fall the 360 is getting an add on, as of right now called Natal, which, usually I'm not into the whole thing that the wii is doing with motion controls, but this just looks awesome.. The technology that's packed into this thing is really interesting I think.. just something else you should keep in mind.

Actually its funny you should mention that. My girlfriend's older brother works for Microsoft on the Natal project right now. I'm leaning towards 360 as it is but knowing that he works for the company does add a little more incentive. She got to play it last time she went up to Seattle and said it was really fun.
Blu-Ray isn't a huge deal for me (right now at least) I've got an HDMI cable running from my Mac to the TV and have a couple hard drives with 720p movies and tv which look amazing. I know in a few years the players will be $50 and the movies will be $10-15 so I'm ok waiting for that time.

Anyway, for my personal opinion, Xbox is the way to go. But we aware, it does get pricey. You have to pay $50 for a year subscribtion to play online, which is way ahead of PS3s online servers, if you want wireless it's another $100, free on PS3, and if you want rechargeable batteries, those are extra too. Keep in mind they are going to have a price drop soon.
Also, if you get an Xbox, keep in mind you really should be an avid online player because it's truely an amazing online system. With the downloadable content for current games, Netflix, arcade games, etc., it's a blast.

For gaming the 360 is the obvious choice. Better controller, better library of games, FAR superior online play, more people actively play it, Gears of War, etc. It is now, however, a much more expensive experience. The top of the line 360 is the same price as the PS3 slim, but the slim comes with free online play ($50 a year on 360, though much more reliable and full of great features - well worth it), built in wireless ($70-100 Microsoft wifi adapter necessary), and controllers that don't suck batteries dead like a fucking tornado. You can buy rechargable battery packs for 360 controllers but thats just another expense.
So the PS3 is a much better and beter valued entertainment system with the bluray and built in features. If it's worth it to you to pay extra to get a great gaming machine rather than an ok machine plus a bluray player, get a PS3. I also reccomend you check out the exclusive franchises to see if there are any games you really want to play.
Metal Gear Solid, Little Big Planet, and Killone or Halo, Gears of War, and a couple others?

That would be an awesome job.. Yeah I'll definitely be checking it out when it releases next year.. Did she happen to say anything about a possible price for it? Surely it wouldn't be more than $300 given the fact that it is an extension to the 360.. But it does have quite a bit of tech in it.. My guess would be between $150 and 200.

Anyone saying that the Xbox 360 failure rate is still at 50% is clearly not well-versed in gaming technology. Since the introduction of the newest chips into the 360 line, the chance of getting a red ring is slim to none. The PS3 slim is a good deal, and for Christmas this year I'll think about it, but I just don't see that many interesting games out for the PS3 right now (not a MGS fan). Xbox 360 is the way to go.

PS3. I know you said you didn't care about exclusives, but I think that's a pretty big factor. PS3 has far better first-party/second-party devs who continue to bring out solid exclusive games. That'll continue as this gen goes on with some great games already announced. Blu-ray, WiFi, replaceable hard drives, free online, PS3/PSP connectivity and rechargeable controllers are other really cool things to have. XBL has more features, but if you look at the PSN and how far it's come it's made huge improvements. That will only get better and will continue to be free. The only thing missing from PSN that I want is cross-voice chat and they will include that eventually, but it's no huge deal. Finally, the reliability of PS3s over the 360s. I haven't seen any data on the Jasper models, but it's safe to say PS3s still have far less of a chance to break down. And with the price-cut it's even a better deal now.
A lot of those points were already mentioned, but that's just my opinion on the matter.

The only area the PS3 lacks in is online play. Xbox live is really the epitome of online gaming.

Yeah these are all really good points. Having built in wireless is a pretty big deal, same with free online. Right now I have money for basically a system ($300) an extra controller and a game or two. If I want to get up and running on Xbox I'll have to pay for the wireless adapter (as I leech internet off my neighbors), xbox live, and chargers for the controllers. If I'm not mistaken the PS3 comes with a USB cable to charge the Dual shock.
My girlfriend also really wants Littlebigplanet haha. I feel like I go back and forth every day on this.
EDIT: I meant to ask, when you have to "load" your games onto the PS3, are they on there permanently (can I sell the discs back) or do I have to put the disc in every time. it seems like the latter but just checking.
colorlesscliche
08/21/09, 06:14 PM
You still have to put the disc in every time. The point of loading games onto the HD is to cut back on load times. In GTA, for example, it could take 60 seconds to load another map, area, whatever, if you load it, it'd take seconds.

Ahh, yeah. The 360 definitely adds up with the additional costs. You should be able to find a pretty good bundle for the PS3 as well. I'm not too sure about the USB cable. Mine came with one, but I bought it almost 2 years ago. It's a standard USB to mini-USB cable though, which cameras use.
Haha, LBP is a lot of fun. Playing with other people and trying to get all the unlockables in each level is addictive. There's another game coming out for the PS3 called ModNation Racers your girlfriend will probably like. It's basically a kart racing version of LBP.

Good call LBP is worth every penny haha

Since all your friends have an Xbox, you should definetly get one. Playing online with friends is the most fun you'll ever have

ModNation looks fun as crap. I think I've made my decision and we're going with the PS3 for all the reasons above. We're gonna wait for the Slim, and see if it bumps the price down of the older versions and get a deal.

Good man. I checked and the Slim bundle here includes the USB cable so it would be the same over there.
You'll definitely have to pick up MGS4. It's a lot less stealth based compared to 3, but I loved them both. Uncharted, inFAMOUS, Killzone 2 and Valkyria Chronicles are some of the other great games that are exclusive. You should check out Bioshock as well. In terms of PSN games Wipeout HD, Fat Princess and Flower is a good start. Castle Crashers and Braid are coming to the PSN too, but they aren't out yet.

PS3 - Free online gaming play, Blu-ray capability, wireless included FREE, Xbox you have to pay for all those plus a dvd player, which leads me as to why anyone would buy a 360?
