Emmure - Felony
Record Label: Victory
Release Date: August 18, 2009
Emmure are a band that I have always been impartial towards. They write simplistic, meaningless music with little to no musical talent. The only thing that ever drew me towards them was my love of breakdowns. Say what you will about the band, but if you like breakdowns, you will like Emmure. The Respect Issue is an album full of catchy breakdowns, and that's about it, which was the only redeeming quality that this band had for me.
However, with Felony, this Connecticut five-piece not only fall flat on the catchiness of their music, they somehow manage to take steps back in nearly every aspect of their music. It becomes very apparent during the first track of this album that lead vocalist Frankie Palmieri has decided to try incorporating more clean vocals into the band's music. This is example one of where they have taken a step back. Palmieri tries to sustain the band's "Tough Guy" image in the way he sings, but he only ends up sounding like Fred Durst.
The second example of this band taking a step back in their music is in the lyrics. The lyrics from The Respect Issue that you thought couldn't get any worse ("I wish those guidos fucking killed you", or "Fuck her like I never could/Fuck her doggy style first") just did. I could go on for days with shining examples of how this band's lyrics have gotten worse, but the fact that this album has the lyric "Ask yo' girl how my dick taste" makes all of that unneccesary.
The third example of how this band has taken a step back is in the music, or more specifically, the breakdowns. The catchiness of Emmure's breakdowns that drew me in to "The Respect Issue" just is not there on their newest release. If this band hadn't completely given up when creating The Respect Issue, then they certainly have now. They even tried to incorporate an acoustic breakdown into their music. Pathetic.
I would have done a song-by-song rundown during this review, but as is the case with most Emmure material, every single song of theirs sounds exactly the same, with no distinguishing elements in any of them. All in all, Felony is a crime in itself, a dissapointing release from a dissapointing band. Felony? Hardly a misdemeanor.

A band that shamelessly rips-off the acacia strain and from a second story window is not for me.

Actually if you appreciate any Emmure, this album takes a step back to their fist album, A Complete Guide to Needlework, which is by far who Emmure really is. As for them ripping off Acacia, that's not true. They both rip eachother off and that is why the two bands are constantly feuding.
Skynet is ABOUT Frankie, and R2DEEPTRHOAT is about Vince of the Acacia Strain.
Therefore. The battle rages on. This album is alright, but it's no Respect Issue.

Emmure has gone downhill for sure, but I don't know if 19% is fair.
Anyone else get the feeling(I can't remember the name) that one of the songs was written about Endwell?

There are so many things wrong with this review it's ridiculous. You gave the production a poor rating, yet any unbiased reviewer, even if they hated Emmure, or even heavy music in general, would score the production high.
I can hardly believe you didn't under stand what the so called "acoustic breakdown" was. It was a recording of the guitar in the studio. As you can clearly hear, it is an unamplified electric guitar, with a metronome in the background. This was one of the coolest little touches on the album.
If you thought the lyrics were awful, you simply don't understand what makes lyrics good.
This is an abysmal, misinformed, trendy review. Stop following trends and review the album for what it really was, not what trendy internet assholes want to hear.

Stop following trends and listen to good music.
I completely agree. Other than the band's inability to make likeable music, their lyrics are terrible.

*in a pseudo-tough clean voice* I'M SO OVER IT I'M FUCKING OVER IT I'M SO OVER IT I'M FUCKING OVER IT!!!!!
Yes, I know that's not from this album but they are still hilariously bad lyrics one year later. :P

Really.....the lyrics? They are awesome in my opinion! The boy has got some balls, and his lyrics are crazy and have a hint of kinda bipolarish style, but this is one of the few bands that I take the time to read threw all the lyrics cause they are always crazy. Great band.

This reviewer gave the album 5/5. Cause it's "all they have ever wanted out of an album."

People don't like Emmure because they represent what is wrong with music. They make terrible, very generic deathcore that has the intellect of someone with Down's. They have no artistic merit or credibility and the only reason they're getting any success is due to the current deathcore fad among scene kids. Also if you're going to insult someone, don't put a smiley face after your insult, it makes you look like an imbecile.

emmure is now officially a joke compared to acacia.
on that note, emmure's Felony is just dumb. it's not even heavy, it's just a bad reminder of all the things i DIDN'T like about heavy music in the 90's. either you're a hardcore band or you're not, they should have left singing to all the bands that are good at it and just stuck with screams. which is another thing, the screams on Felony are totally wimpy sounding.

Thanks man :D, Emmure is a guilty pleasure of mine. Although I know they aren't original in any form.
The song refers to the conflict between Emmure's lead vocalist and The Acacia Strains. Apparently The Lead screamer from Emmure slept with The Acacia Strain's gf after they got into a fight...

The past two albums that Emmure has released are nothing compared to their new album being released pretty soon. For all those who didn't like the other two albums, those where just stepping stones to what is next to come. Emmure's new album Slave to the Game already has a video out, check it out on youtube. If that doesn't sway your opinion-then try going to their live performances.
The stage presence of Emmure is one you will never forget. The breakdowns on stage are more intense and in your face than you can imagine not to mention everywhere you turn there is a well formed mosh pit.
Every band is allowed a few tester albums to get their groove down. However, Slave to the Game.. well you'll just have to see!
