Stemming from the Daisy Album Sales poll, who's more popular in the US: Brand New or Oasis?
Definitely Oasis. Brand New is only well known in ' the underground ' .

Here are some numbers, comparing the last four Oasis releases with Brand New's albums. To compare Be Her Now, (What's the Story?) Morning Glory, or Definitely Maybe to Brand New would be silly. Oasis would obviously be the winner. ANYWAY. Here it is.
Oasis in America:
Oasis's Standing on the Shoulder of Giants (2000) sold a total of 208,000
Oasis's Heathen Chemistry (2002) sold 154,000
Oasis's Don't Believe the Truth (2005) sold about 200,000
Oasis's Dig Out Your Soul (2008) sold 116,000
Total = 676,000
Now here is Brand New...
Deja Entendu (2003) sold 500,000 since May 2007
The Devil and God (2006) sold around 60,000 in the first week
That (outdated) total = 560,000.
Not counting Your Favorite Weapon, the sales of Deja Entendu in the past two years, or the sales of The Devil and God since the first week, these numbers definitely point to Brand New being more popular. Deja Entendu alone had a higher total of sales than the last three releases of Oasis combined.

If we're going by sales, if Brand New and Oasis were to release an album on the same day, I think Oasis would sell more. Even if Brand New does have longevity in terms of sales and Billboard ranking, I doubt they'll reach Oasis in sales.

a band can be popular but still disliked, which will not sell records...you are not getting the point. More people know who Oasis is then Brand New. popularity does not mean success.

Yall are all saying oasis because they had one huge hit in the US with wonderwall, but you forget back when Deja was released Sic Transit & Quiet Things both got a ton of radio play. Whenever i play a show i always warm up with the Sic Transit line and a majority of people know the bass line is from that song (and i generally don't play to a crowd who should know that song). My vote goes to Brand New

It would be absurd.
It's completely irrelevant to how popular Oasis currently is. Just because a band sold a lot of records earlier in their career doesn't mean they stayed popular, Oasis isn't nearly as popular as they were in the nineties. I think it would be correct to say, "Oasis was more popular than Brand New will most likely ever be, while they were at the height of their fame, before the release of Be Here Now," but that isn't the argument. That wouldn't even be an argument. In the current decade, judging by the album sales of Oasis and Brand New, it seems likely that Brand New is more popular in the United States.

Yes, they are STILL popular, but not nearly as popular as they were in the nineties.
But to be fair to all of you saying I left out (WTS?)MG from my post about album sales, I'll just compare the first week sales of both band's latest releases:
The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me = 60,000
Dig Out Your Soul = 53,000
60,000 > 53,000
Brand New = Winner.

That's just not a valid argument at all. Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova are still more popular and far more prominent in the popular music canon than anything Brand New has released. Those two songs are still currently well-known. That's just the truth. And I love how all of your comparisons are specifically tailored. You compare their albums but eliminate two of Oasis's biggest ones, and then you choose to compare first week sales. You can paint this any color you like, but at the end of the day, it's Oasis. And this is coming from somebody who isn't even that big of a fan of Oasis. You're just wrong.

Two well known songs don't mean anything about how popular a band as a whole is.
Just because Total Eclipse of The Heart is a popular song that still gets radio play doesn't mean that Bonnie Tyler is currently more popular than Brand New. The Safety Dance was also a one-hit-wonder that was a very popular song for quite a while. But that doesn't mean Men Without Hats is currently more popular than Brand New.
I compared the most recent album sales because your post made me realize I was being unfair, comparing Brand New's last two albums to Oasis's Last four albums. The past is completely irrelevant, and if I dismiss (What's The Story?) Morning Glory, I might as well dismiss all the other albums aside from the most recent ones. If I had a total number of sales for The Devil and God, I would compare those to Dig Out Your Soul, but I don't so the best I could do was first week sales.

I would argue this point because it's ridiculous on several different accounts (Oasis's hits were always clearly associated with them as a band, whereas Safety Dance was not nearly as connected to the band that made it - furthermore they were in an era of new wave songs rather than long-standing bands... but again, I won't argue this but instead will direct you to the quote below:
go around your neighborhood and ask everyone if they know brand new and if they know oasis...i guarantee itll be a land slide for Oasis. i guess you really dont know how popular oasis actually is
Honestly, branch out of the "scene" and go ask your average folks. I'll put money on Oasis running away with it.

I was just typing up an answer and realized most of it has been addressed. Nowhere in the OP's post does it state who is more popular NOW. If you're to compare Brand New's most popular/successful album with Oasis' it wouldn't even be close. I'd venture a guess that at least half of you who voted for Brand New are just looking for a rise out of us and the other half, as I responded to above, don't have a grasp on reality.

Yeah, Oasis at the height of their fame was crazy. 2 nights at Knebworth for a total of 250,000 people, but then again, that's in Europe, and this poll is about America. By the way, it is about now. It says, "who's more popular?" Who's meaning who is. I believe "is" isn't a word used when referring to past tense, but I could be wrong?

I misworded my previous statement. Popularity and success are two different things. Popularity has to refer to the past tense as well as the present. As musicians, you achieve popularity through the albums you release and how well they're integrated into society. You can't take away Oasis' 4x platinum status just because the album was released in the 90s. If you judge recent SUCCESS, then I guess by your numbers, Brand New would win. But that's not that same as popularity. If you surveyed 100 random people, I'd guarantee more would state that they've heard of Oasis over Brand New.

Well, I guess it is up to interpretation. It really depends on how you define popularity, for instance, whenever I'm in a car driving my mom or friends around, and Oasis comes on the radio, they groan and say they hate Oasis. Would that make them popular? I thought popularity was based on people liking something, (don't kill me for the extremeness of this comparison but...) it's kinda like how everyone knows about terrorism, but that doesn't make it a popular thing. That is a bit extreme, but you know what I'm trying to get at? I'm not trying to sound like an asshole or anything.

You can probably judge popularity as either how well-liked OR how well-known they are. I prefer to use how well-known. Like those popular kids in high school, I fucking hated. They were popular because everyone knew them, not because everyone liked them. Your parents and friends groan, but at least they know who Oasis is. Brand New probably wouldn't garner much of a reaction besides "what the hell band is this?"

But here is another example. I'm still in highschool, and there are still those kids that everyone knows and no one likes. Not like popular as in douchebag, but popular as in people make fun of them. Does that make them popular or does that make them something else? It's not like everyone tries to be these kid's friends or anything, like they do with the douchebag popular kids. That's why I judge by how well-liked they are. When it comes to how well known, I think Oasis will take the cake, but when it comes to how well-liked, I think Brand New would win. Brand New has a wider range of sound, while up until the latest Oasis release, a lot of their stuff sounded similar causing them to get a bit annoying. But I'm glad a poll consisting of my two favorite bands has gotten this much attention, considering how different the bands are...
This poll's results are fucking laughable. It just shows how many people on here don't realize music exists outside the AP bubble. Pretty much everybody over 30, besides people in the music industry, have never even heard of BN yet Oasis is a household name
Plus I'm pretty sure Oasis still sells out areas in the US and Brand New will never accomplish that. Ever
They don't sell out arenas, during their most recent fall tour, I remember the date in Camden had a lot of empty seats. I also remember posting on some Oasis forums and hearing people say the places weren't that full...
Ari Christos

Just for the record, I voted Oasis. This debate sprung up in a separate poll and I wanted to give it it's own thread.
Here's an example: if I said the name "Mark Zuckerberg," chances are most people won't know who he is. If I said "Facebook," most people would immediately know what I was talking about. Just because Mark Zuckerberg is the billionaire creator of Facebook, it doesn't make him more popular than Facebook itself.

I take "more popular" as "who's more liked". I'd say Brand New. In high school, when Deja came out, even non-music crazed fans had a copy of that album, and would always ask me "do you like Brand New"? I would say that Brand New overall is more liked than Oasis.
oasis.
stupid poll is stupid.
BN fans are getting out of hand
