You know when you hear a band's EP and you think, "Fuck, this is awesome. I wouldn't mind hearing their next effort." Well, Tangled in Chords by The Woodwork is that kind of EP.

As the first riff hit my ears, I was eager to keep listening. "Chemistry" could be a great single for this band, but it's unfortunate that it misses as an opener. No, I'm not saying it just completely sucks as an opener, it's just that the great thing about Tangled in Chords is as it progresses track to track it only gets better. And for the life of me, I can't really think of any other band's first EP that has that kind of chemistry with me (pun intended).

The off tempo beginning of "You're Such a Hotblood" reminds me of Midtown for some reason. Why? I barely have a clue. Point is: it's good. The dancey chorus, the catchy riff, it all adds up to an advantage. "Let Us In" has the catchiest chorus between all of us these songs, and could probably be a fan favorite. The soft melody between a belting vocal are stellar, and the post chorus makes it stand out from the other songs as well.

The middle of the record is where the music gets Panic(!)-like, but in a good way. The Woodwork are taking whatever influences them in melody, and song structure and using it wisely, making it their own. The only quip I have with this record is the acoustic track, the extremely short "Tangled in Chords" where the vocals sound so similar to Brandon Urie that it irks me to think that they were going for that on purpose. Who knows.

Each song on the album creates its own mood, whether it be a cutesy little love tune, or a revenge song. All in all, I'd say that this EP reminds me of the first time I heard Hit the Light's first EP Until We Get Caught. The infamous review (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=97382) that occurred here at AP.net hopefully won't be repeated with a band like The Woodwork, who use their influences to highlight them greatly.

Nice review! I saw this band play at my high school last year and they were pretty great. I bought the EP there too, but I've never really listened to it and I'm thinking maybe I should.
