the "actors stuck in the same role" prompted me to make this thread
so, who do you think has done the best job in the greatest variety of films?
I'd like to nominate Tom Hanks, and if you need an explanation, you probably dont appreciate acting in general
for an actress, Kate Winslet comes to mind, she did such a fantastic job in Eternal Sunshine
honorable mention to christian bale solely for his role in The Machinist, all I can say is "Wow, that is dedication"

Johnny Depp.
He spent four months living with Hunter S. Thompson to pick up his dialect.

Haha, what can I say? Easily my favorite actor. He's amazing with facial expressions and voice work. And makeup, too. He rarely looks the same in two movies.
And yeah, Edward Norton is great as well.

Guy Pearce and Christian Bale are the most versatile actors in Hollywood in my opinion, no comparison at all. Watch LA Confidential, Memento, Ravenous and Priscilla Queen of the Desert and then American Psycho, Shaft, The Machinist and Batman in a row if you question. Of course both need more comedy, but those are such differing roles it's intense.
I'll also agree with Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Edward Norton. Great, versatile actors also.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman also

he does do mostly supporting roles, but he manages to steal the scenes he's in no matter what, like hannibal and true romance. and when he is a big part, he's phenominal, like dracula and sid and nancy.
seriously though, the guy's roles are all over the place and he's never given a bad performance.

another thing about him too is that you've probably seen him in more than you think. he's rarely recognizable.

I think Tom Hanks has been said, he's gotta be the most versatile. He can do so many roles, it's crazy. I think Dustin Hoffman to an extent too.

I loved the movie the Graduate, and he played his character great for an actor pretty much just starting out in the business

Yeah. Anyone who can play Captain Hook, Bernie Focker, and Rainman gets my vote. Three totally different characters with nothing in common. And those aren't even his best movies. Alot of people tell me to see Runaway Jury, I've never seen it though.

I think Hoffman is the best out there.
Jack Nicholson is up there too.
my vote goes to johnny depp, phillip seymour hoffman, and gary oldman. i don't think any of these guys have played the same character twice (excluding sequels of course), whereas most hollywood actors basically play themselves.

i don'th think this person is the most versatile, but since most of my picks have been mentioned several times, how about jeff bridges. in the big lebowski he plays the ultimate stoner in The Dude. but in seabiscuit he delivers a great performance as a sucessful buisness man.

how about willem dafoe. That guy has done just about everything and played a role as just about every nationality there is, besides being like a black role of course. Like in the last couple of years or so he's got roles ranging from Spiderman, Once upon a time in Mexico , and life aquatic just to name a few. And then you can't ever forget him in platoon. What a great movie.

maybe, the score and the italian job were similar
but I think his transition from american history x to fight club to red dragon and the fact that he is such a terrific actor means that he has a huge potential to be very very versatile, even more so, in the future

Death to Smoochy was insanely funny.
Halle Berry without a doubt. She can play a crackhead, a lover, a possessed jail inmate, a cat, a porn star, the list goes on

Hotel Rwanda to racist in Crash. Now that's versatility.
By the way, Dafoe is awesome in boondock saints... "What a ***" probably the funniest line in the movie hahaha.

The actors named so far are all incredible. I have a preference for Philip Seymour Hoffman, but I did want to throw Peter Sargaard's name into the ring. They are both relatively young, but show so much potential.

Nice one. I definitely want to see him continue to push himself.
gary oldman is sick... i didn't really like the 1992 Dracula, but he was amazing. Plus him in Batman Begins and back in the Professional were completely different roles. I just saw Interstate 60 a little while ago, and he was great in that too as well as different
