View Full Version : Most Cliche, Overused Jokes and Sequences in Movies/TV?

I figured I'd create a thread on the most annoying and predictable parts of TV and movies these days. Post which overused one-liner has you cringing every time, or the most predictable set ups for jokes in comedies today.
A couple examples:
-I hate it in movies/shows where the main characters are trying to a solve a problem, and turn down one of the character's ideas, and congratulate another character for coming up with the same idea.
(Example:
Character 1: "I've got an idea, how about (states their idea)?"
Character 2: "That's a terrible idea."
Character 3: "Well, how about (presents same idea)?"
Character 2: "Wow, that's a great idea! Good thinking!")
-Another thing that bugs me is in comedic chase scenes where the male main character runs past some girls, and then walks back to talk to them despite the chase that's going on. Way too predictable.
What about you guys? Post some you think are annoying too.

i hate when shows constantly do flash backs that have no actual relevance to the story. the writers just wanted to do a joke so they laid bait they could take to do a pointless flashback. and in most flashbacks (going back more than a week) show the characters having really outdated hairdos.

Yeah, this is the main reason Family Guy is difficult to watch.
What really angers me is when a character has a brief, pointless interaction with another character ending in a stupid joke, and then the character just goes off to stand somewhere, letting another character do the same thing. It's just unrealistic and it seems like they're just cycling characters to cram in jokes. That 70's Show does this a lot.

UGH, nothing worse than when like a dad is like "hey I still know how to get down" or some outdated bullshit, not funny. I only approve of Eugene Levy talking like this in American Pie, because that's one of my favorite movies, he's the man, and the stuff he says was still cool in 1999 when that movie came out.

When the main character in a horror movie takes out the killer who is chasing them. Actually, less horror than thrillers. Something that bothers me is the lack of sophisticated video game humor in most movies/television shows. Usually, they'll show a character playing a Game Boy (without a game cartridge in it, accompanied with 1980's-esque blips and beeps sound effects, even if it's set in the present day) and over dramatically "getting into it" and then saying something along the lines of "I'm almost at level 40!". It's not funny in the least bit.

I really hate the "This was all made up" series finales.
Roseanne's ending is a perfect example of this. where they revealed the whole series was just "the real Roseanne's" book and that Dan's heart attack had actually killed him, the Conner family had not won the lottery, Becky had married David instead of Mark, Darlene had married Mark instead of David, and Jackie is gay instead of Roseanne's mother being gay.

this is pretty similar to a couple that have been mentioned, but -
in slasher movies when the main character is facing off with the killer in the final battle. they have a clear shot with which to kill the villain, but instead they choose to have a ten minute conversation about motives and shit first.

One I just remembered:
A close up of a character giving an extrememly long and heartfelt speech (normally about being in love with a girl, or telling their parents something really important), and once they are finished talking, the camera pans out to reveal that the whole time they are talking to an animal or an inanimate object.
What about when two characters are supposedly sharing a secret or talking behind someone's back and that person is just happen to stand outside the door and overheard the whole thing. It's even more annoying when movies play out society's stereotype about certain races: African-American women who are loud and obnoxious, Asian kids who are math genius or some fat kid who can't get a date to prom.

the airport scene. when the female character finds out what the male character has been hiding behind her back or lying about this whole time, they have a fight and then when shes about to leave to go to another city/country to get away from him, the man chases after her and theres a whole scene when hes running through the airport and then when he finds her (usually as shes just about to board the plane) he makes a 10 minute speech about how wrong he was and he'll never do it again. and then the scene ends with a kiss and they get back together.

Or
Victim: So want to kill us because of what Steve did? We ALL have to pay for what he did?
Villain: DING DING DING, we have a winner, tell him what he's won, Johnny!
It just mostly ends up overcooked
When in movies that are set in high schools the main character (usually "uncool") gives this long speech to the popular kids about how ultimately, this is the best their lives will get and the main character will come out on top, and the popular kids actually give them time to finish what they're saying without laughing obnoxiously and leaving. Would never ever ever happen in real life.

When characters are thrown into "difficult" situations, and instead of doing the simplest and best resulting thing, they do the stupidest.
Or when they need to lie quickly about something, they say something completely unbelievable. And in the short time that it took them to make up that terrible lie, I'm sitting on my sofa thinking "...Why the hell didn't you just say *obvious answer*."
Sure enough they make them say the stupid thing to be funny, but there's a fine line between "funny" and "annoying."

oh god i hated this!
i can't stand terrible finales, such as Seinfeld.
Not starting a fight here, but Seinfeld had one of the best series finales of all time.
EDIT: Haha, I wasn't trying to be Kanye there either...
Whenever a bad guy captures one of the good guys and delays killing the good guy by an exorbitant amount of time (in order to give the other good guys enough time to save him) or uses a really inefficient method of killing to try and kill the good guy when a much more efficient method is readily available.
I just saw the latter scenario play out on Walker, Texas Ranger this morning. This bad guy shoots and kills one of his minions in the previous scene because he had no need for him any longer and in the next scene, prior to making his escape, says that he has to kill DA Cahill so that no witnesses are left behind. Instead of shooting her with the gun holstered on his hip, he tries to choke her to death. But when Walker enters the room, he reaches for the gun. WTF?!? I guess he felt bad about using a gun because she was a woman?

Weed being inaccurately portrayed and causing people to trip out and do things that weed doesn't do
I love Half Baked, but this was such a problem with that movie. When Thurgood is at the hospital and he picks up a few pounds from the weed pharmacy or whatever, it's clearly ...dead grass?
even though there is some crazy shit going on the main character finds time to fall in love.
there are a million movies like this but a couple random ones that pop up in my mind are
transformers
twister
every adam sandler movie
This is seriously too good.
Edit: Throw Eagle Eye and Cloverfield on the list as well.

One could argue that Dude, Where's My Car didn't really have a romantic subplot, even though girlfriends were involved...

Or when they literally take a one second hit on the huge bong and are instantly high and when their kids and take a tiny hit of a miniscule joint and are instantly high
I'd say Pineapple Express is definitely the most realistic stoner movie.
I thought about this during Jennifer's Body. Her friend Needy is actually gorgeous but is ugofied by dorky glasses and gnarly pulled back hair
Nothing can make Amanda Seyfried ugly, she's far prettier than Megan Fox at least I think so

I hate the joke about condoms being hard to open. This joke is so over done because they aren't even hard to open. They're incredibly easy to open. Where the fuck did you get those condoms from? Why do you keep buying them if they are so fucking hard to open? The guy stands there for a moment and struggles with the condom, usually there's a shot of the girl looking impatient. Lame. I just saw this example last night in Californiacation.

I agree completely. Sitcoms are the worst for this.
Edit- Does anybody else hate laugh tracks as much as I do?

One I just remembered:
A close up of a character giving an extrememly long and heartfelt speech (normally about being in love with a girl, or telling their parents something really important), and once they are finished talking, the camera pans out to reveal that the whole time they are talking to an animal or an inanimate object.
like a mirror. that's the worst one for sure.

Another one, the "horror"/"thriller" where the twist ending is that the protagonist is the killer, it's so obvious now
