I was going to make one of these closer to the draft, but the eagles website is holding a pick-a-day mock draft and the eagles just picked.

according to the fans, it was a three man race between chad jackson, len dale white, and ernie sims. the fans went with jackson.

out of those three, i say white is out. even if he's available, i don't want him. i have no problem with sims or jackson though. with jackson, we upgrade our weakest offensive skill position to a pretty promising young corp. sims would lift a pretty shakey position on defense, that would also take much needed pressure off the secondary by helping control the box and getting in the quarterback's face a little.

i like either one of these picks at 14 if we can grab them. we definately need O-line help, but I'd much rather burn a first rounder on one of these guys, at least to give me something to get excited about for the next few months. but it's the birds, and i can't remember the last time one of their drafts had me buzzing the next day.

i'll bring this thread alive draft day if it dies out.

i approve of every thread you've ever made

philly fans want jackson because he is the sexy pick, but i have faith in the eagles receivers, no pro bowlers but i dont think they will cost them games

best case scenario for me would be if winston justice fell to 14, considering they might need two tackles next year if all the games runyan has played catch up to him

out of the selections i chose sims, hes a playmaker with 4.5 speed who is drawing comparisons to derrick brooks

i would totally agree with justice, but i really don't see him falling. i have no problem with sims at all...i actually think he'd help the team a lot more from the start. i just am dying to see our offense score points again.

I'm praying that Chad Greenway drops to our pick in the 2nd round. Hell, even with him sucking at the combine I would take him in the first round, that's how high I am on him.

LenDale White is dropping like a stone. I don't know if he's deliberately sabotaging his stock or what, but he's killing himself.

I like Chad Jackson, but he needs a lot of work and I don't think the Eagles WR coaching staff is very good at developing talented players with potential.

Sims wouldn't be a bad pick, but god I want Greenway.

he had a great workout. Something like a 39" vertical and 38 reps on the bench press, as well as a 5.15 40 yard dash.

I also read on NFL.com that Justice pulled his calf during that 5.15 40 between the 25 and 30 yard marks and actually "pulled up" as he finished off, so the possibility of him running a high 4.9 to mid 5.0 40 yard dash is there.

I'm very impressed with him - athletic, strong, quick, agile, intelligent and tough (he took up boxing during the year he was suspended from USC football)

i just saw a mock draft that had the eagles getting jackson at 14...but then it had sims not even in the first round. sims stock is growing, so i doubt in three weeks that will be the case, but if it looks like he'll slip somehow, i'd love the eagles to package up some of those 4-7 round picks they have piled up and trade up for a solid 2nd or 3rd rounder. you can only have 53 players on a team, i really don't see the point stockpiling that many late picks, most of which won't be able to make the team and the rest won't make a huge impact when you can take two of them and grab a guy who can play in September without completely selling out your late rounds.

the eagles arent interested in picking at 14 anyway guys. they are going to trade their pick and other picks to get a top 10 pick for a guy they wont name in the media. if they cant get a trade worked out or if he is taken ahead of time then they are just going to trade for more picks. either way i dont think we're going to see them with the 14th pick in the draft

Sims would be a terrible pick, in my opinion. He's too small and has an attitude problem. Plus, he fits better in a Cover 2 system like Tampa or Indianapolis than a 4-3 like ours.

lock the doors...everyone else out...we've got some drafting to do

alright kids from the homeland...what are they saying on Comcast and WIP right now? I don't get much info down here. I did hear the Birds are now heavily trying to trade up to 7, 8 or 9 to get the DT from Florida State, but not much aside from that. Is that our only play?

yes, but isn't thomas' contract up soon?

i'd like to give up thomas too, but i think we could move walker with a third or 4th instead of a 2nd rounder.

the good thing we know is that we will have our 1st rounder.

also you have to think a trade was not made to move up because we may need those picks for walker.

eagles could make this a great day.

yeah, i figured a lot more news has been swimming around philly the past few days that i needed to be caught up on.

a lot of crazy stuff could happen. if the eagles think they're getting walker, they won't draft a wide out, they'll take the kid from florida state at DT. then they'll be able to trade darwin to the pack to get them to tone down their demand for a first round. (basically what paris just said). that, i think, would be an amazing draft, killing two needs with one stone.

now, there's a chance it won't be all that, and they'll just draft a player and that's that, but i'm really excited right now.

sundaysetsashes

think about it, we can draft 3 players who could give us immediate help. now with the signing of runyan i don't know if they'll go with justice any longer...but

ngota, greenway, or bunkley should be there.

i've seen greenway as a late first rounder...i think if they pick him it's too high.

if they take the two DT's, i think it's setting the table all too perfectly for a trade to get walker. past history makes me cautious to get too excited for a great move like this to happen, but i'm starting to get a little antsy for it.

Johnny_G
04/29/06, 11:32 AM

Guess what though? That's the best deal they're gonna get. Denver just gave up an extra pick for Cutler and the Saints have a ton of money to give to Reggie Bush. Unless NE can put something better than that on the table, Javon will be an Eagle.

the eagles need to step up and dish the 2nd rounder for walker. No player they're gonna get in the 2nd round will have the impact of Javon on this team, and our window of opportunity is closing. The time is now for management to give us a chance to win again this season.

the eagles need to step up and dish the 2nd rounder for walker. No player they're gonna get in the 2nd round will have the impact of Javon on this team, and our window of opportunity is closing. The time is now for management to give us a chance to win again this season.
i kind of agree...i think if they don't deal the pick before they use it, it loses its value. getting it to green bay so they can pick who they want is huge. we'll greet bunkley tomorrow, start dealing today.

U-WIRE) SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Many NFL players came from universities in a big football conference like the Pac-10, Big 12 or Big 10. Stars are manufactured at the University of Southern California, Ohio State and Miami University -- not California Polytechnic State University.

Chris Gocong, an engineering senior at Cal Poly, will try to do what most "small school" players never get to: play in the NFL.

Several teams have expressed interest in the 2005 Buck Buchanan Award winner, but the New York Jets told Gocong they intend to select him if he's still available in the third round of this weekend's NFL draft. The Jets pick twice in the third, Nos. 71 and 91, respectively.

Gocong is expected to land in the third or fourth round, some analysts even projecting him to go in the second. But questions remain about his ability to make the jump from Division I-AA football to the NFL.

"I'd say I proved myself against bigger guys at the East-West Shrine Game and also against the competition at the combine," Gocong said.

One of the most popular questions asked of Gocong is if he will be able to compete with seasoned NFL veterans being from a small school. The East-West Shrine Game gave Gocong a chance to match up with some of the top seniors in the class of 2006 -- and several hundred NFL scouts and other personnel in attendance.

Gocong, who roomed with USC defensive end Frostee Rucker at the San Antonio-based event, recorded three tackles in the annual all-star extravaganza.

It was an impressive outing for Gocong. However, doubts about his career at a Div. I-AA school remained. Undeterred, the top pass rusher in Div. I-AA believes he is just as talented as his Div. I-A counterparts.

"Coming into the whole process, (Frostee Rucker) had more clout because he was from USC, not Cal Poly," Gocong said. "But after the East-West (Shrine) Game, we're equals. We both played on the same field, we both went to the combine, and I think that kind of equalized (our status)."

The Santa Barbara County native, graduate of Carpinteria High School, averaged 1.81 sacks per game to lead the nation in 2005. He had 23.5 sacks in 13 games to break the Cal Poly record.

Some have compared the 6-foot 2-inch, 263-pound Gocong to Teddy Bruschi of the New England Patriots. Analysts also criticized Bruschi about his size and ability to convert to an NFL-caliber linebacker.

Cal Poly head coach Rich Ellerson doesn't buy into the analogy, and he should know. Ellerson coached Bruschi at the University of Arizona as the top defensive assistant on staff.

"Frankly, Chris is bigger, faster, stronger," Ellerson said.

At 6-1, 247 pounds, Bruschi has become a dominant force in the NFL, anchoring a Patriots defense during a stretch of three Super Bowl wins in four years. While analysts criticized his size, he at least played for a Div. I-A team.

"Obviously Teddy was playing at the highest level, Division I football. Chris has to keep answering that challenge," Ellerson said.

Gocong isn't the only potential small-school coup in the draft.

Abilene Christian, Div. II, defensive back Danieal Manning is projected to go in the high second round to low third round. David Pittman of Northwestern State (Louis.), a Div. I-AA school as well, is also projected as an early third round pick.

Manning, Pittman and Gocong are Kiper's top sleepers in the draft.

Last year, former Cal Poly teammate Jordan Beck had a similar draft experience. The 2004 Buck Buchanan Award winner was selected No. 90 overall (third round) by the Atlanta Falcons.

Beck sat out the 2005 NFL season after breaking his foot in a pre-season game, but is expected to be ready for training camp come summertime.

The most notable defensive player to make the jump from Div. I-AA to the pros in recent years was current St. Louis Rams linebacker Dexter Coakley. The first recipient and two-time winner of the Buck Buchanan Award -- 1995 and 1996 -- reached the NFL after four years at Appalachian State. He led the Mountaineers to the Div. I-AA quarterfinals in 1994 and 1995, recorded 616 career tackles and tallied better than 20 tackles in a game on seven occasions.

Coakley was selected No. 65 (third round) by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1997 draft.

Gocong will watch the draft from his house in San Luis Obispo with friends and family. Despite the projections, Gocong knows there's still a chance he'll fall to the second day of the draft (rounds four-seven).

"I'm pretty happy (about being projected in the third round), but I won't be emphatic until it happens in the draft," Gocong said.

i actually like the pick now. he can play olb/de.

Kiper had him going in the 2nd round. He has a tape around yahoo somewhere. Dude looks like an absolute beast. I'm happy with the pick and simply think we had the best draft of any team.

In the 4th I could see D. Williams, but I'd much rather see Darnell Bing or Ko Simpson to replae B Dawk in a few yrs or M. Lewis if we cant get him signed long-term.

I also wouldnt mind seeing Max-Jean Gilles massive guard from Georgia, cant believe he is still on the board. Lastly, I would like to see a KR taken and a big FB to replace that pitful Parry later in rounds 5-6.

Avant was an easy and enjoyable receiver to grade because his limitations are strictly in terms of his explosiveness and top-end playing speed. He has the size, strength, hands, competitiveness and all-around athleticism that is ideal for a No. 2 possession receiver. He is going to need to learn to use his hands much better to defeat cornerback jams in order to be a productive receiver in the NFL. For a receiver who lacks true explosiveness, his ability to burst out of cuts and get a step of separation on short/medium routes is surprising. He has the hands to reach out and make tough catches seem routine, and even though he will at times body catch some passes within his frame, he consistently catches those ball well also. Overall, Avant's lack of explosion and elite playing speed will hinder his ability to consistently get separation vs. good NFL cornerbacks and will keep him from becoming a No. 1 receiver. However, he has all the tools to be a good starting No. 2 receiver who will be most effective as a possession-type receiver that will make a lot of catches in traffic and will always be a strong runner after the catch who breaks tackles and gains yards after contact.

I grade them an A to A-. We have fulfilled our needs. Though they are not "sexy" picks they are all high quality and value picks.

I love the Avant pick. He comes from the Big 10 where he was playing against top quality defenses all year long and managed to catch 82 balls for over 1000 yards and 8 tds in just 12 games. Sure he doesnt have the explosiveness, but in our offense good possession receivers are what we need. Great great great pick in the 4th round.

I think we got exceptional value for all of our picks so far. Andy Reid can flat out build teams through the draft, and this year is no different.

i didn't read any page before this but i love andy reid's mentality of building from the line out, even if they aren't sexy picks
The Eagles just set a record:

Fattest guard tandem in the NFL. Shawn Andrews and Max Jean-Gilles are fucking HUGE.

Edit: My fault, does Andrews play guard or tackle?

Andrews will play G. But he has the flexibility to play either. Runyan and Thomas will start the season as tackles with Justice hopefully right on their heels.

Andrews and Jean-Gilles combined have to be about 700 pounds. That's unheard of. But I hope it works out for them.

All said it looks like a great draft on paper...we got a bunch of picks further down than they were supposed to be, so the value is through the roof. the offense is still under the spotlight and more than anything, the guys from last year need to forget about last year and play like they used to play. almost july...
