View Full Version : 4 bands with the biggest impact on my musical taste.

from the ages 7-10, all i listened to was the beatles. it drove my parents nuts. then 11-12, i had an awkward phase where i didn't listen to much music. around age 13, i went through a massive led zeppelin phase, and they got me into the other classic rock bands from that time period. then i found my personal gateway drug to modern music, foo fighters. while they don't see much time in my audio arsenal these days, i think that dave grohl and the guys are the coolest dudes and music, and i will always say they are my favorite band in an honorary sort of way. right before my 18th birthday, i got really into radiohead, and they have been in my regular rotation for over a year now. i personally think that the beatles, led zeppelin and radiohead are the three best bands of all time. foo's just have a special place with me. so my question to you is:
who do you listen to/ respect more/ enjoy more:
the beatles vs. led zeppelin vs. radiohead vs. foo fighters.

i listen to everything from ledbelly to lupe fiasco to miles davis to the gaslight anthem to modest mouse to joy division to nirvana to bon iver to the postal service to elvis costello to brand new to talking heads to kanye west to bright eyes to tv on the radio to queens of the stone age to jimmy eat world. you may not like those bands, but it is a fairly diverse list if i do say so myself.
you listen to fall out boy, blink-182, panic at the disco, angels and ariwaves, (+44), and worst of all, linkin fuckin' park. you are 15 years old. go start your car in the garage and die. oh wait, you are 15 and don't have a permit to operate such machinery unless mommy or daddy are there by your side. so go choose another way to off yourself.
EDIT;; furthermore: led zeppelin, the beatles and radiohead possess three of the most diverse catalogues ever recorded.

If I was you I wouldn't argue with Brand New, Jimmy Eat World, Modest Mouse, The Gaslight Anthem, The Postal Service, or TV on the Radio....or Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco. Listing pretty much any "it" band on this site is a no-no.

well i'm not going to lie about what i listen to. and none of those bands really sound like the other. besides the new brand new single and modest mouse (there i said it). and kanye west and lupe fiasco aren't very similar as far as rappers go.

whenever i see somebody listing extremely obscure bands in an attempt to show their musical diversity (superiority), it comes across as pretentious. i just felt like naming bands that are diverse from the one's listed i.e- miles davis sounds nothing like jimmy eat world, who sounds nothing like neil young, who sounds nothing like ledbelly, who sounds nothing like the postal service, who sounds nothing like tv on the radio, who sounds nothing like elvis costello, who sounds nothing like queens of the stone age, who sounds nothing like joy division, who sounds nothing like modest mouse, who sounds nothing like kanye west, who sounds nothing like... you get the point. i could have named gregory and the hawk, refused, grizzly bear etc., but the odds of that kid knowing who i was talking about were very slim. especially when you consider that his 'favorite albums' list contains works from fall out boy, panic at the disco, blink-182, (+44), and angels and ariwaves. the most diverse thing he mentions from those acts is (gag) linkin park. so for the sake of the argument that me and him were having, i need not list the most obscure artists i can find, but rather just a wide array artists that cover several different genres- blues, jazz, hip-hop, mainstream rock, indie rock, folk. over basic simple pop-punk (the shittiest of the genres) that are in his arsenal.
and once again, i maintain that no three bands with any iota of success have a more diverse catalogue than the beatles, led zeppelin and radiohead.

Obscurity doesn't dictate diversity. You didn't have to list Grizzly Bear or Refused to prove your point about listening to diverse music. I enjoy John Legend and Phish, they're not obscure in the slightest, but they diverge from most member's listening habits. You chose Brand New, Jimmy Eat World, The Gaslight Anthem and Modest Mouse to prove a point about listening to diverse music. That's pretty laughable considering what site this is.
I just wanted to give you a hard time, because you used the worst comeback possible...shitting on another user's tastes.

yes, because those artists you keep listing are relatable for the average user. if i don't mention them i come off an elitist. then i also list ledbelly, miles davis, talking heads, joy division and bon iver, who only have a very small flollowing on this website. so essentially what i am saying is "yes- i listen to the same bands that a good portion of this site does listen to, but i also am able to branch out."
also, you are forgetting why i "shit on another user's taste." that particular user said, unprovoked, that my musical taste is bland. so i feel completely justified to engage in debate at this point.

How do you come off as an elitist if you don't mention Brand New? Bon Iver has a huge following on this website, everyone creams themselves over For Emma.

Those were just the bands I listed in the profile I spent about 20 seconds making on a site called absolutePUNK. I didnt say you didnt listen to good music, I just mean the poll was just a list of 4 of the most popular bands ever. My musical taste is far more varied than just blink and Fallout Boy, but Im not going to list it or Ill seem like some elitist prick who is dropping band names to look cooler. Also, by ignoring Eminem, the Beastie Boys, We are Scientists, and Death Cab for Cutie from my quick list and only saying blink, FOB, and P@TD just makes your comments seem pathetic.
Btw, I chose the Foo since Dave Grohl is like an idol of mine, and seeing them perform in concert was amazing.

I’m not going to check it out, because the same shit happens all the time. Blink fans don’t “get” Radiohead’s music, and Radiohead fans think Blink is immature and holds no real substance. The same shit happens with a multitude of bands around here.
No I have never been on this website. Have you not noticed that once someone starts shitting on another’s musical taste, they in turn will get shit on? It’s how it goes. I realize I’m not talking shit on you or your taste per se, it’s just what you classify as diverse and my understanding of that word is somewhat different.
Just search for thread titles or posts that contain Bon Iver. Obviously they don’t have nearly as big a following as Brand New (because that’s fucking impossible), but most people who post on this website have heard of them and have listened to their music. They’re not a well-kept secret around here.

well the four bands that just so happened to make the biggest impact on my musical taste happen to be four very popular ones. but one thing i hate is when people trash on popular bands just for being popular. some acts deserve popularity. i'd much rather see these three get the recognition they deserve for the impact they made on my musical taste rather than not list them out of fear that a 15 year old kid with a "182" suffix at the end of his user name might think i listen to bland music. the beatles got me into music, led zep got me into classic rock, foo fighters got me into modern rock and radiohead i think is just too outstanding of a band for me to possibly ignore. i agree, foo fighters live are incredible.
death cab for cutie and eminem don't really get you anymore points as far as i am concerned. although i used to love death cab about a year ago. and the beastie boys? huh.
all i am saying is that you went on the offensive about my lack of musical diversity, without knowing any more than four bands i listen to. so hopefully listing/ "name-dropping" bands and artsits that i play should provide a better scope of my musical spectrum. i maintain wholeheartedly that the beatles, led zeppelin and radiohead own the three most diverse discography's of any three bands with even an ounce of their success.

well do you think any of the artists i listed have similar sounds, or a comparable catalogue? no, they really don't. some bare more resemblance to others, but for the most part these artists are fairly unique from each other.
what i consider 'diverse' as it applies to music is a contrast in styles and sounds that make two bands or artists totally distinguishable from each other. i.e the beatles sound nothing like led zeppelin, who sound nothing like radiohead. just because two bands have a large popularity (on this site, or in the real world) does not mean they can automatically be lumped together as similar artists. earlier in this quote-and-comment war, you grouped together gaslight anthem, modest mouse, jimmy eat world, the postal service and tv on the radio in an attempt to take away my claim that i listen to diverse music. but do any of those bands sound or have a signature style similar to the other? no, not really. other than they fall under the umbrella of alternative rock.

my bad for ignoring the sheer musical genius of the beastie boys, or eminem, because i should regard his music so much higher than blink-182's or fall out boy's. or death cab for cutie, who is actually pretty good, but when one considers your argument for diverse music, a lot of people on this site listen to DCfC, so i should lump it in with panic and the boys from his favorite bands list, right? and i can admit i have not really looked into we are scientists, so i won't make an opinion on them unfounded.

No my point is that the difference between Eminem and Lil Wayne is as vast as the difference between Brand New, Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World, and The Gaslight Anthem...Gaslight is pushing it but they're still rock, the others might be indie-rock.
If he's going to shoot down some kid for listening to FOB and Blink because they're not diverse, then I'll give him shit for listing the previously mentioned bands. It's not that difficult to comprehend. I've had my fun and I'm getting bored now.

where were you when this argument started? Did you not see who cast the first stone here? I just was taking my turn in a debate. He essentially was saying that the beatles, led Zeppelin and radiohead are similar sounding bands, and that my taste in music is less than because those acts are what inspired me in what other bands I branches out to. And are you telling me blink, fall out boy, panic, (+44), and angels and airwaves is somehow more ecclectic than those bands I listed. ? Now, tell me Im only picking the 'worst' bands in his list. But I only excluded four artist, three of which are mainstream and have a large following on AP, so my dear lyndz can't say they add any more diversity to his taste, by her own definition of the word diverse. Where as you neglected the likes of miles davis, ledbelly, joy division, talking heads, queens of the stone age, etc., artists that do not have a mass following on this website.
So in summation:
Diversity has nothing to do with how popular the bands a music listener digs are, in the real world or on absolutepunk. Diversity between two artists has to do with the differences in the body of work they produce, the difference in style and attitude, and the difference in structure and sound. If you can keep bringing up modest mouse, the gaslight anthem, brand new, jimmy eat world, and tv on the radio, while denying the genius and reverence that miles davis, lebelly, neil young and others you convieniently left out to allow this conversation to go on this long the reverence they deserve, then I can mention blink, fall out boy, panic andthe two blink branch off bands as much as I want.

I get what you're saying here... My Chemical Romance is my 'favorite' band by way of chronological right. Really, it's between them and Madina Lake, but I always say that it's MCR just cause I've been listening to them for two years longer. (Since 2005. Yeah, yeah, when Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge came out, when they hit the mainstream... That's not cool at all... But if I spent my time worrying about what's cool I'd never get anything done.)

did you read my original post at all? lol
from the ages 7-10, all i listened to was the beatles. it drove my parents nuts. then 11-12, i had an awkward phase where i didn't listen to much music. around age 13, i went through a massive led zeppelin phase, and they got me into the other classic rock bands from that time period. then i found my personal gateway drug to modern music, foo fighters. while they don't see much time in my audio arsenal these days, i think that dave grohl and the guys are the coolest dudes and music, and i will always say they are my favorite band in an honorary sort of way. right before my 18th birthday, i got really into radiohead, and they have been in my regular rotation for over a year now. i personally think that the beatles, led zeppelin and radiohead are the three best bands of all time. foo's just have a special place with me.

You listed mainstream hip-hop artists, indie-rock acts, rock acts, folk acts, and one jazz musician...That doesn't exactly scream diverse to me.
I don't totally agree with you here. Yeah I rolled my eyes when he listed Brand New and Kanye West, but I'm applauding him for listing TV on the Radio and Lupe Fiasco. TVOTR is by far one of the most talented (yet super underrated) groups out there right now and Lupe is a sick MC with some of the best lyrics in the business. It has nothing to do with picking mainstream artists.

thanks (for the most part) understanding. the point of naming the artists i named wasn't for any other reason than none of them sound that similar. i don't care if one of the artists i listed are popular on here or in the real world, it is what i listen to. whether or not kanye west or brand new have a large fan-base is irrelevant. get what i'm saying?
and yes, TVOTR is incredible. as is lupe.

Surprised that the Foo Fighters are that high up there. I went with them because out of the four, they're the only ones in my group of favourites. Although I love the Beatles, some of their stuff depends on the day. Same with Radiohead. Never got into Led Zeppelin.
Also, OP, your avatar wins.

Got 'em! haha, joking.

well the four bands that just so happened to make the biggest impact on my musical taste happen to be four very popular ones. but one thing i hate is when people trash on popular bands just for being popular. some acts deserve popularity. i'd much rather see these three get the recognition they deserve for the impact they made on my musical taste rather than not list them out of fear that a 15 year old kid with a "182" suffix at the end of his user name might think i listen to bland music. the beatles got me into music, led zep got me into classic rock, foo fighters got me into modern rock and radiohead i think is just too outstanding of a band for me to possibly ignore. i agree, foo fighters live are incredible.
death cab for cutie and eminem don't really get you anymore points as far as i am concerned. although i used to love death cab about a year ago. and the beastie boys? huh.
all i am saying is that you went on the offensive about my lack of musical diversity, without knowing any more than four bands i listen to. so hopefully listing/ "name-dropping" bands and artsits that i play should provide a better scope of my musical spectrum. i maintain wholeheartedly that the beatles, led zeppelin and radiohead own the three most diverse discography's of any three bands with even an ounce of their success.
Oh Hi there ignorance! What's up? Sorry, but Beastie Boys are one of the most creative and influential hip-hop acts of all time. Play again though!
Radiohead then the beatles. Don't care about the over two

did i say they weren't? seriously, did you read the conversation at all? the person that comment was geared to was talking about my lack of 'musical diversity'. so we got into a heated-glamorous-interweb debate on the matter, and my point in saying 'beastie boys? really?' was that they were mentioned by him to show off his listening range. which makes no sense, because i could hear fall out boy, blink-182, angels and airwaves, linkin park, beastie boys and the rest of the shitty bands he listed on 9.49 the sound, our local alternative radio station here in cincinnati.
so yeah, you took things out of context. 'play again though'.

By your same logic used in the thread earlier, Beastie Boys sound nothing like Angels and Airwaves, etc. I could The Beatles, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, and Foo Fighters on 93XRT in Chicago, but that doesn't mean they're similar.
So yeah, play again.

do you feel it's a stretch for a fan of angels and airwaves or fall out boy to like panic to listen to beastie boys?
anyways, you quoted me, getting red in the face, accusing me of insulting the beastie boys as creative artists, which i never did. then, when you realized i never did insult them as creative artists, you found something else to get mad about. so, are you really looking to argue this topic; or are you just looking to argue with someone? lol as far as i'm concerned, this has already been had, so i'm not responding to anymore quoting you do.

You're right, you corrected me, and I found another flaw in your logic, and pointed out. I'm glad you are being mature about it though. You're right. Every fan of medicore pop-punk would love one of the best hip-hop acts of all time. For sure.

i listen to everything from ledbelly to lupe fiasco to miles davis to the gaslight anthem to modest mouse to joy division to nirvana to bon iver to the postal service to elvis costello to brand new to talking heads to kanye west to bright eyes to tv on the radio to queens of the stone age to jimmy eat world. you may not like those bands, but it is a fairly diverse list if i do say so myself.
you listen to fall out boy, blink-182, panic at the disco, angels and ariwaves, (+44), and worst of all, linkin fuckin' park. you are 15 years old. go start your car in the garage and die. oh wait, you are 15 and don't have a permit to operate such machinery unless mommy or daddy are there by your side. so go choose another way to off yourself.
EDIT;; furthermore: led zeppelin, the beatles and radiohead possess three of the most diverse catalogues ever recorded.
