View Full Version : Right Away, Great Captain! (Side Project of Manch Orch's Andy Hull): Official

Chop[chop]

There are multiple other RA,GC! threads, but they're all scattered and aren't really all that comprehensive. So here goes:

Right Away, Great Captain! is the side project of Andy Hull (of Manchester Orchestra). So far he's released two albums under the name:
The Bitter End and The Eventually Home.

Right Away, Great Captain! is a concept in which Andy tells the story of a sailor who's at sea in the 1600s. Each song acts as a journal entry told by the sailor as he struggles with himself and his emotions while at sea. The story goes as follows:

The day before the protagonist (an unnamed sailor) leaves on a three year voyage around the world he sees his wife sleeping with his brother in the bedroom of his house. The sailor has children with his wife and loves her, but decides to leave on the three year voyage without confronting her about it. He joins the crew and befriends the captain of the ship, who tries to reassure him that everything will turn out fine in the end.

I won't impose my interpretation of the songs onto anybody, but both albums follow a reasonably clear chronological narrative.

In a recent interview, Jeremiah of Manchester Orchestra and head of FGR said:
'We’re also looking towards trying to do that hopefully for Right Away, Great Captain! (Andy Hull - Manchester Orchestra’s front man’s solo project,) trying to get that out over in the UK. We’re also toying with the idea of vinyl things and splits. I think, depending on scheduling, doing maybe a Right Away, Great Captain! vinyl, finally printing up the first record, 'The Bitter End'.'

Andy plans to release three albums to form a trilogy. The final album is due anytime soon - most likely in 2010.

Ah, I forgot! Really glad you like it. I'm Tom, by the way. :-)

I can't wait for the third album either. I hope he decides to call it 'The ___ ____' so it fits in with the previous two albums nicely. Also hope he doesn't use the electric guitar too much on the next one and sticks with the acoustic.

I still believe that Andy's beard that he has now spawned from RA,GC! He wanted to have some promo shots where he could pull off the sailor look, and it ended up sticking.

Which don't you like? I've got a few that I sometimes skip every now and again.

What album would people rec to start?

Definitely start with The Bitter End so you get a grasp of the story. If you make it through it you'll get a pay-off when you listen to The Eventually Home where the production's stepped up a notch.

Memories On A Deck Part II, Sacred Heart (A Sailor's Drunken Eulogy) and Captain I'm Fine And Thank You For Asking are the only ones I don't particularly like.

The beginning of Captain I'm Fine.... just sort of annoys me and makes me cringe. Just the first line, for some reason.

Wow -- 'Memories On A Deck Part II' is one of my favourites.

'I could tell she wasn't lying, you were lying with a lion up there,
I could tell you that I saw you but I couldn't make up the stairs.'

and:

'I could tell you I was dying but you wouldn't know for three more years.'

Are two of my favourite lyrics on the whole album.

I do agree with you slightly about 'Captain I'm Fine', though.

If you get the chance to talk to Andy, he's incredibly humble and nice, and a bit of a smartass. He told me he's going to record the third enstallment of RAGC right before they record the next MO album, so, i don't know, 3 years?

It's mainly an acoustic, folky sound. It's a three part story about a sailor. It's only Andy, none of the other guys. It's a total different project. How is this not different from Manchester Orchestra? Only the genius vocalist is the same...

Well I'm pretty satisfied with MO so I haven't really give his side project a chance. Usually "harder" sounding bands would form projects that have a much more "softer" sounds but to me most of MO's songs do have that acoustic, folky sound so I didn't think they could really go anywhere else from there. But after all the positive reviews from this thread, I'm willing to give it a listen.

I prefer this project to the new album. I'm Like a Virgin had a lot more slower songs but I didn't think last year's release was as good.

'The Big Bad Devil and the Great Good God'

From Andy:
The third and final story/album starts with our hero laying over anna's lover (and hero's brother). the brother has been killed. his wife has seen what the children saw and we spend a lot of time inside our hero's mind and the reality that he is indeed a murderer of his own flesh and blood.

Wasn't expecting the storyline to take that route. Super excited for this though.
