View Full Version : to get kittens or not?

so i'm a junior in college at wash u in st louis, and i have a one-bedroom apartment that i'll be living in for the next two years.
i've wanted a cat my whole life, and i'm seriously considering adopting two gorgeous little kittens tomorrow.

if it all works out like i hope, it will be amazing to have those little cats around; it will really brighten my life.

i am worried about the commitment and the potential costs if something were to go terribly wrong.

also, traveling/moving could become big issues if my cats are hard to handle.

what do you think? have any advice/experience or know anyone who does? thanks.

i love cats and kittens are awesome. i say get them, so long as you're not planning to getting rid of them once they've grown.

All my friends adopt cats/kittens when they decide to get serious with their significant others, I do not want to follow this trend.

It all depends on how much time you have to actually care for the animal, and if your able to drop it off at a baby sitter lol when your away/ busy.

depends on your character, if you're lazy and tend to delay things all the time, i'd advise against it.

get them. they really arent hard to care for if they remain inside, and if they are siblings they will probably get along great and entertain eachother

Make sure you have the necessary money available in case they get sick/develop a condition/need vaccines, etc. Aside from that caveat, I'd say do it. I love kitties.

If you have the money to pay for the shots, I say go for it. Be sure to get siblings though; less dependent on people.

Get one cat! And I suggest a gray male, or an orange male. They're fun and loveable. Don't get female cats, they're stuck up, "hey look at me" bitches.

Kinda like girls in real life.

Cats are fairly easy to take care of; yet they are still a loving pet.

I would do it if I were you, but maybe just one instead? Two would be harder...

My boyfriend got 2 about 4 months ago. They are cute but they are a piece of work at the same time. Whoever said that they won't need as much attention is wrong.. I would say go for 1 first... but it's entirely up to you. If you think you can take care of two kittens (who play at night too) pay for all the food/vaccines etc then go for it. But after experiencing his two kittens for two months now I think he shouldn't have gotten them so soon.

getting kittens while in college can totally work out but you have to be able to care for them cost-wise - cat food has gotten really expensive (especially if you get them decent food, which you should) as have cat toys, vet bills are not cheap, and then you've got the constant expense of litter - plus, having to clean the litter box constantly. they'll be okay if you leave them together for a weekend but if you have any ideas about traveling at all - there's the cost of boarding them or having a cat sitter come over to watch them. this is not cheap and it definitely makes you less carefree as a person because you have to care for other living beings, not just yourself.

cats live typically about 15-20 years, so this is not a short-term commitment you'll be making. if you feel like you can devote enough time and attention to them and will be able to provide for them i say go for it. if not, hold off, there will always be cute kittens to adopt later down the road.

You can't just get one because your kitty will need a little kitty friend. :-(

exactly. my two kitties were brothers and they got along great (some might even say "purrfectly") and kept each other busy but were completely opposite in their personalities so there was always something fun going on with them. the only problem with adopting brothers was that they ended up having the same terminal illness that was completely hidden until they reached about 3-4 years old when I ended up spending thousands on their vet bills to no avail.

cats are the best though, i intend on having cats again in the future.

I have a cat that I adopted in May of last year literally days before my last final exam as a senior in college. It was horrible timing and I was stressed to the max. But I do not regret adopting her for a second. She has brought so much joy to my life. I too had wanted a cat all of my life and she was worth the wait. Yes finances can be a problem if something were to go wrong, but you can invest in pet insurance which would pay off in the end. My cat has moved with me three times - once across the entire country - and she was perfectly fine. I say go for it. :-d

thread should be "to get pussy or not?"

but then you could integrate cats into the discussion by saying cats will get you pussy.

As everyone else has said, make sure you have the $$ necessary to take care of them and you're good to go. And get them from an animal shelter please! They always have loads of kittens and that way they will probably be spayed for you.

Get the kittens. Cats adapt better to changes than one would think. Also for if ' something should go wrong' cats generally are very good at healing themselves, of course castration ect is necessary.

i'll be honest...dont get peta on me. I had a cat. picked IT up at the pound. It turned out to be a bitchy. I went out of town, I came home the bitch was pregnant. Little bit later the slut gave birth. Had 3 rodents. They looked gross at first for a few damn weeks, nasty even. I didn't go near um. One day I awoke and they were kittens. They were all so cute. I loved every last one of them. Momma bitch got pregnant again. I said "Fuck that shit" I gave it to a friend. I now had the three kittens. They grew and loved me as I them. Until one day Fluffo, the fluffy kitten, no longer came to me. And it was afraid. It pissed me off, so i got rid of it. Then Whitey, the all white one, for some reason also became afraid. It hurt me so much becasue i cared for those sonsofabitchys. So I gave that bastard away also. Now i only had Tigerheart left. Tiger loved me. When I come home, it comes home. When I leave it goes to bed, or goes out on the town. But it's been a year and that thing aint pregnant. Looks like it's a guy. YAY.

Bottom line, i aint getting no mo cats. Fuck that shit. I'm not paying to get it fixed/spayed either. Again, fuck that shit. Dont' be a girl and we'll be fine.

btw "gave to a friend" = ditched somewhere.

i'm sorry but people like you make me sick. they offer low cost or free spaying/neutering at the SPCA and often at many vet clinics. this post doesn't make you come off as "cool" like you probably think it does, it just makes you look like an ignorant asshole.

Cats are very easy to take care of. I have 3 and travel all the time. Especially if they can go outdoors, because then you don't have to clean the litter box if you are away for a while. Just leave a ton of food. But, it's really worth whatever minimal cost to have them. Cats, and animals in general really do just make life better.

Cats are one of the easiest pets to have.
_they are independent.
_they sht in a box.
_they can find fun without you.
_you can fill there food bowl sparringly.
_they still show you affection without being irritating.
_they are adorable.

Idk,i've had my cat twiggy for almost 12 years and she is the most awesome animal i have ever had.
Only things tht i can say that make me mad about her is:
_she snores obnoxiously loud.
_if you pet her too much she drools.
_she only drinks out of cups. (which we sloved years ago by getting her one of those huge purple mugs.

Cats make great pets. Get'em.

i agree completely. that is so cute about her drinking out of cups only. My cat, Sebastian, was a big time drooler as well. he was so sweet but you had to make sure you weren't wearing anything nice while petting him or you'd have a big drool spot on you!

I love her though, she's like 13 or 14 now. We found her. and have had her sense.
And about the moving thing he was talking about, we moved down to georgia for 7 years and she was fine with it.
But shit...My cat ws a hoe when we first had her.
We got her fixed after the 9th liter she had.
we love kittens, but finding home for all of them? not cool.
