MONEEN - The Red Tree

Thus far in 2006, there have been a few really good records, some solid ones, and more mediocre albums than I can count. No album has hit me in a way where I have to take a step back and just mutter “whoa.” Enter The Red Tree, the new album from Canadian rockers Moneen and the first great album of 2006. I enjoyed their previous efforts, but I was not expecting this album to hit me like it did. This 11-track masterpiece incorporates beautifully crafted lyrics with music that is just as delicate as it is hard-hitting, making this album full of intensity, passion, and raw emotion.

Moneen kicks off with “Don’t Ever Tell Locke What He Can’t Do,” a fast paced song with mesmerizing guitar riffs from Kenny Bridges and Hippy Hughes. Bridges shows great vocal range and control on this track, and lyrics like “You try to say I can’t/yes I can/you can’t have all that you want/yes I can/when you’re wrong I’m still not right,” making this a great opener. The second track, “If Tragedy’s Appealing, Then Disaster’s An Addiction,” shows off how well each instrument compliments each other, especially from Erik Hughes’ bass and Peter Krpan’s drumwork, making this a favorite on the album. Plus the lyric “I’m not a failure now!” will be hard to not sing. “Bleed and Blister (Version 3)” features guitars that jet back and forth on top of pounding drums. The first standout track on the album is “The Day No One Needed To Know," an epic track, clocking in at almost 6 minutes, and is a combination of passion and aggression. Bridges vocals remind me of Kenny Vasoli’s vocal work on the last Startling Line album, and that’s not a bad thing. The way Bridges holds out certain words on this song make it that much better. The way the song alters between gentleness to aggression is done so well here. The next track, “This Is All Bigger Than Me,” is another standout track from this album. A slower track that begins with Bridges soft tenor over a steady guitar riff and drumming, it gives me shivers. The background vocals and the way the song builds up at 2:13 is truly great; I haven’t heard this much emotion in a song all year.

The album picks up the pace again with “The Frightening Reality Of The Fact That We Will All Have To Grow Up And Settle Down One Day,” with Krpan’s drumming and the guitar work of Bridges and Hughes being the backbone of this track. “The Politics Of Living And The Shame Of Dying” is another song that starts up rather mildly but then builds up into a strong climax. Some of my favorite lyrics from this album are present here, like “Cause it’s our goddamn right to live/yet it’s still not our choice to die.” On “The East Has Stolen What The West May Want,” Bridges’ voice really carries this track, with drawn-out vocals and great control on when to be loud or quiet. “Seasons Fade…Fevers Rage…It’s A Slow Decay” is very melodic, with Bridges and Hughes harmonizing very nicely while the guitars are restless, keeping the enthusiasm up throughout. The final two tracks of the album are what make this album so great. “There Are A Million Reasons For Why This May Not Work…And Just One Good One For Why It Will” is another epic and beautiful song that’ll be one of my favorites of 2006. The vocals are right on, bursting with sincerity and a sentiment just not seen in the majority of albums these days. The final bridge is spectacular as are the lyrics “What if this had never happened?/we had never seen the light of day?/what if this had never happened?/we had never met at all?”

The Red Tree closes out with the spacey and piano-heavy “The Song I Swore To Never Sing.” Bridges’ vocals are very haunting here and I get goose bumps when I hear the final line of this song, where Bridges sings in a quiet tenor “So kill yourself/surprise your friends./Raise a toast/to everything we once had.” Simply stunning, you have to hear it for yourself, as this is one of the best closing tracks in a few years. It’s so difficult to choose my favorite song of this album, because tracks 1 to 11 are all just so damn good, making this the most complete album of 2006.

I haven’t been hit this hard by an album since Thursday released Full Collapse. The Red Tree is truly remarkable and gives me hope that emotion in music isn’t dead. Moneen has given the 2006 music year new life, as it is a breath of fresh air in this oversaturated “scene” we listen to today. Each song flows perfectly with each other and the balance between the hard and the soft sets this album on a bar that no other album of 2006 has touched. Don’t let Moneen’s The Red Tree fly under your radar; you’ll be kicking yourself for missing out on one of the best albums of 2006.

good review but i definately disagree. i would never drop masterpiece on any album except Sgt. Peppers and a few select others. But even Sgt. Peppers has its flaws and its my favorite album of all time, and its arguably the greatest album ever conceived.

I agree with the comparison to Kenny Vasoli's vocals, and they also remind me of Jason Gleason at times. I was quite impressed by this album and only bought it because it was $5.99. I could never get into "Are We Really Happy..." other than the occassional listen, but this album blew me away. Better than I ever could have expected.

Loved the CD, though the vocals on a few of the songs strongly reminded me of Kenny Vasoli, but I love TSL so I don't mind. One of my favorite CDs of the year so far, and I think it'll be staying on my playlist for quite some time.

I think you're giving this album too much credit. It's a good album, but I strongly disagree in saying it's the first good album of the year. I don't think it's all that different from older moneen, with the exception of the songs being a little less all-over-the-place and the lyrics being less hateful. Just my two cents.

this cd was such a surprise for me....the best part is the huge step that the band took to get to this point. the first 6 tracks are definitely the stand-outs of the album, but on the whole its still amazing. "the frightening reality..." is my favorite song of the year thusfar.

i can't believe i like this. i heard a couple songs on their myspace and liked what i heard. it being six bucks at best buy made me go pick it up. low expectations=record sounding better.

Not sure its great yet, but one of the few releases in 2006 i've given more than a cursory listen to

I'm so glad I have these guys a third chance. I had no plans to hear this album. I wasn't motivated to listen. Actually, I was just going to download a bunch of their stuff because I didn't expect the new album to be out there yet. I was amazed and had to reassure myself that this is the new album and not the other one that I hated. I was so suprised. It is going to be one of the top albums of 2006. Yes, its early in the year but this has a certain sound to it. One that I don't think will be topped.

definitely, they go off live. also some of the nicest guys you will ever meet. after their set the last time i saw them, kenny came to the front of the stage, shook my hand, and thanked me for singing along. i have never seen a band be so appreciative of their fans.

Well, I disagree on it being the first great album of the year. There are 3 or so albums that I'm absolutely in love with, and then this one came out. I can honestly say that this album is amazing and will more than likely end up in my top 10 (or even 5) at the end of the year. So solid all the way around. And I agree on the Kenny Vasoli comments as well. Eerily similar. I just got back from their show tonight actually. People were right about them being excellent live. I talked to Kenny afterwards. Very nice guy.

I really appreciate these guys for being unique in their songwriting from structures to all the things they do musically, but I've never really had the patience to sit through their cds. Their live show is totally the most insane thing ever, I'll always remember them playing the Warfield in San Francisco, the singer broke at least two Telecasters, plus he surfed across the stage on one of them, it was the most energetic live show I've seen in my life and I've been going to shows of all genres since I was a little kid. Even though I can't get into the CDs, Moneen has all the respect in the world from me.

I just bought this album today, and for 5.99, it was the best deal on a record ive had in a long time. Ive been listening to it nonstop, this album is amazing. For me, it tops "Floating World", htough they are both excellent. I think my favorite track has to be "The Day No One Needed To Know". Also, I agree that the ending track is an excellent finale, and I love that last line. What an amazing album, Im just simply blown away. I hope they read all these great reviews of their album, they deserve all the accolades and I hope they get a ton. WOW.

One thing I don't understand is why the user ratings have artwork as the lowest ranked item. The artwork for this album is simply incredible. Kenny really came through with the photography and the entire packaging is great looking, very elegant.

Really? You guys think this is amazing?

I got it for free from a friend and it sounds like any other band out there. Some of the tracks stand out but I never would have bought it. I guess it's the singing. Very little melody.

the last song is really great though

idk maybe it will grow on me. But it's surprising, Drewbert, that you think this is the best release since Full Collapse (in that it hit you in a big way)? That's really surprising coming from a fellow Thursday fan.

Who do you think Moneen sounds like then? I can't really pigeonhole them with a lot of other bands.

My reticence to get into them was that they are good friends of Alexisonfire and so I assumed they would be of a similar sound. They are completely different and miles better!

Drew, you used the word "epic" a lot in this review. That song should be reserved for Angels and Airwaves reviews, only.
