So, I just watched it. It was pretty fucking brutal. What do you guys think of this movie? Is there some underlying metaphor I'm missing? Or is it just a gross-put exploitation film? Any reqs for other movies of the type?

it's a pretty obvious that it's about the savage nature in man, and how the greatest inhumanities wear perpetrated by the photo journalists. also

Mountain of the Cannibal God
Massacre at Dinsaur Valley
Welcome to the Jungle (new and way less exploitative and shocking...but same feel/style)

It's alright, it's more fun to watch it with someone who gets upset real easily.

overrated
How so? I don't see many people saying its a great movie or much praise like that.
Its basically known for being shocking and the animal cruelty scenes....which for the time it came out, and even today..it is somewhat shocking.

I feel it's overrated because most people I've talked to about it actually thought it was real (ala Blair Witch) and always talk about how sick and violent it is when in reality, it's like seeing Bob Saget doing stand up for the first time...it's pretty raw and brutal, but after the shock value goes away, there's nothing left. If you want to watch a fucked up film that will actually make you sick, check out Salo or even the splinter scene from Zombi will do (still to this day makes me cringe). I know enough horror fans that will all say the same thing about this but at the end of the day, if you really have a heart for this film, great, I just personally feel it's an overrated piece of work, doesnt make me any better or worse than anyone in here, it's just a personal opinion.

It's not that enjoyable, but worth watching once at least

I know a lot of it is staged but my friend who is a huge movie buff was telling me that the scene where the kill the turtle is real and it took like four different takes (aka killed 4 different turtles). Other than that I agree and think it was pretty overrated as well. The same friend who told me about the turtle scene also said it would be the most horrific thing I'd ever see but I really didn't think it was that bad.
