hmmm...was this the free show? but i really hope they play more than that on their summer tour. call me greedy, and i'd agree.

and opening with soco..i've never seen em before, so i dunno if they normally do that or not...but thats weird.

have u gone into the setlist forum? go look at alk3's tour. sure, they have WAYYY more material, but they are doing 30ish songs, partially acoustic, partially electric, 2.5 hrs.

MCS has 2 albums, they did about 20 on their tour.

And like that kid said...where's Jude Law?

7 o'clock is a shitty curfew. But that's good news that they wanted to play more.

Thanks a lot for the speedy update!

Amazing set. I agree that closing on "Okay, I Believe You" would be killer. That's also pretty cool that they opened with SoCo, but I'm surprised they played the new song second.

Playing a demo leads me to believe that they may include some of the demos on their record contrary to the rumor that none of those would make the final release.

As for someone saying we got gipped... don't forget, it was also free. Hard to say you get gipped when you don't pay a dime.

Also, they kept saying on stage that they considered the show a practice for their tour. Which I guess makes sense... except it didn't seem like a practice when they were playing. They rocked. It was a ton of fun, a lot of people showed, more than i expected. The guitarist looked like mario, with his new mustache and wearing a red shirt. Hah.

There are 3 guys at a urinal, one from UVA, one from Tech, and one from Radford, the UVA guy finishes and washes his hands once or twice, then the guy from Tech finishes and just throws some water on his hands. The guy from Radford finishes, zips up and gets ready to walk out the door. The other two guys look at him and ask why he didn't wash his hands, he replies "They teach us not to piss on our hands at radford"

its a bad joke, i think its supposed to cut on UVA and Radford.

yeah its pretty hard to flunk out here, i found the joke it goes

The UVA grad finishes up, zips up, walks to the sink, spends two full minutes washing his hands with gobs of soap, and dries his hands with a pile of paper towels. As he leaves, he says loudly, "At UVA, we learned how to be clean and hygenic."

The Tech grad finishes up, zips up, walks to the sink, washing his hands with a minimum of soap and water, and dries his hands with one paper towel. As he leaves, he says, "At Tech, we learned how to be clean, hygenic, and environmentally friendly."

The Radford grad finishes up, zips up, and walks out of the bathroom without washing his hands while muttering to himself, "At Radford, we learned not to piss on our hands."

people use it for JMU also

Aw, you know you make me warm and fuzzy on the inside. I hope you had a killer time, TJ. Do you think there were a lot of non-UVA kids? How was the crowd? Any openers?

uhh, they sure as hell didn't advertise any openers. I know we had a battle of the bands in february, and the winner got to open for springfest... that was before they signed brand new. and maraschino (me, jeff, john, and friend of ours from uva) was in the battle but lost... lame. But yeah, a few people played before them, but i have no idea who any of them were. And i feel like there was more non-uva kids there. i saw james and jen in the pit. we rocked. though the cops tried to break up all the circle pits that formed... haha, uva sucks.

uva has miserable music taste. freshman year, springfest was better than ezra. last year, it was robert randolph and the family band. I mean, i guess theyre cool and all... but cmon. their heyday was a decade ago. brand new rocked it. all the kids here like jam bands and country.

I was at the show as well, and I am a member of the concert-planning comittee that put on the show (PK German) and I was also the one who originally championed Brand New as the Springfest headliner, so I'm happy as shit right now.

As for the show, that setlist is accurate (not that it really needed clarification), and despite being a bit rough around the edges, the show was AWESOME, much better than their American University show of a couple years ago but not quite as amazing as their 9:30 Club show. "Sic Transit Gloria" was the definite highlight of the show, but I was really sad that they left "Guernica" off of the setlist. Before the last song Jesse asked the crowd what they wanted to her and almost honored a request for "Jude Law", but after being notified that they only had time for one more song (and they were well aware of the time limit of the show) they opted for "Tommy Gun" instead.

The sound check was the easily the single best sound check I've ever heard, as they played a new song (I don't believe it was one of the leaked demos) that sounded great, and "Demo 8" sounded AWESOME (much heavier and with an awesome riff at the chorus) live with a full band, so I don't think anyone should complain as I'm now really excited to hear a studio version. The inter-song banter was mostly limited to Jesse's discussion of the fact that this was their first show in a year and a half and that they weren't as prepared as they normally were. He asked that the crowd bear with them, but it was still a great show despite this. He made some minor lyrical slip-ups during "Play Crack The Sky", and needed some help remembering the opening to "Seventy Times Seven", which was supplied by the crowd. There was no discussion of the new record (he didn't even acknowledge the fact that they're recording; no "We're recording a new record right now" or "We just recorded a new album" comments or anything).

The best part of the show for me was the band's attitude, and they all just seemed like they were having a great time being back together and performing again. Jesse even slipped in a few smiles during the performances. Other notable moments were the awesome jam sessions on "No Seat Belt Song" and "Good To Know..." (introduced as "a song titled 'Attention' on our setlist" by Jesse).

As for questions regarding the openers, regional band Filomath and DJ Logic were the openers or Spring Fest, but that has no bearing whatsoever on the upcoming tour as Springfest is completely independent of that tour. It was an awesome show, especially since it was free, and I for one didn't feel gipped at all. If anyone has any further questions regarding the show, I'll try to answer questions on this thread, and I'll also be featuring a full review on my website, www.GoodWeatherForAirstrikes.com (http://www.GoodWeatherForAirstrikes.com), by the end of the weekend.

yup, that derek guy pretty much summed up everything i was about to say...the set was short because they started a little before 5:45 and springfest ended at 7, not really a "curfew" i don't think. it did seem that jesse lost track of time and was still planning on playing a few more songs. i think they were about to play jude law but when they told jesse only one more song, he went with the crowd's choice of tommy gun for the last song. not gonna complain because it was a great show and of course free. can't wait to see them again in july.

oh yeah i recorded the show but i'm not sure how it came out. i was right up front but i had no room to move so who knows. it'll probably be really staticy (stupid recorder does that when its being hit from all directions lol)..so unless someone knows how to remove static like that (which i don't) it might not sound too great

You guys remember this update from brand new back on July 2, 2005??

"What happened was we holed up in a house all winter with the guitars and the amps and the keyboards and trombones and things and also MenWomenAndChildren (http://www.menwomenandchildren.com/) were there and we all were writing songs, playing all the EA Street games and weathering THE STORM that was snow as well as our bands. They kept everything they wrote because they are indiscriminate dance-a-holics and because everything they do is perfect, and we kept one song. The working title is "yeah" and the the refrain goes, "...YEAH!" and the middle eight is more like the chorus and it's got some loud guitars going on."

I dont know if this has been mentioned before, but hes talking about DEMO 8 right??

there were a shitload of kids dancing. true, it's not really "appropriate," but it was really cool nonetheless. instead of a bunch of frat assholes (we chased them all away), you had a bunch of kids flipping out and dancing. kids went NUTS during seventy times seven (i know i fucking did). there was even a mini-pile on in the pit during "so is that what you call a getaway."

i drove from richmond, and it was well worth my time. easter weekend was a great one to choose, less people there to be there, and more kids there to see the music. setlist was fine; not sure about the whole curfew thing, but jesse said they were being forced to cut the set short; they seemed like they wanted to play a thousand more songs.

everytime i looked at the drummer, he was fucking smiling and laughing. awesome stuff.

i cannot WAIT until next saturday.

I just got back from the show I was up there all day and man charlottesvile is boring no offense but it was worth the wait. Even though they did seem a bit lost from time to time i.e. forgetting "...had to go write a song just to remind myself how bad it sucked' in seventy times seven but it was just great to see them live again i have not seen them since dashboard, Mxpx tour years ago and dancing guy during Dj Logic was way more entertaining than watching DJ put the needle down on records and standing there

My review of the show.
Brand new started out with a sound check playing a new song that left me in awe. The only way I can describe it was it sounded stadium huge. Everything from the drumming to Jesse’s vocals had a very full and urgent sound to it. After that they played untitled 8 which was not one of my favorites when hearing the demos. In fact, Its one of the songs I really hoped wouldn’t make it to the new CD if any did. After hearing it with the full band though I have to say I changed my mind. Jesse puts so much more emotion into the singing and Vins lead really shines in the full band version. The band said this was kind of a practice/warm up show for them and it showed. That’s not a bad thing necessarily. They still played amazing, but made a few mistakes (like playing the first part of the bridge in jaws too many times and forgetting lyrics to play crack to the sky) you wouldn’t normally expect to see. It was just a lot of fun watching them back in action to tell you the truth. The only things I wish they had done that they didn’t would be to play a few more new tracks and definitely give us more info about the release date for the new CD. Overall, the 3 hour trip was more than worth it and I think its safe to say that we can expect huge things from Brand News new CD. Be excited.

I was at the show. Jesse Lacey pretty much didn't want to be there. At one point on stage when the fans requested "Seventy..." b/c they had no more songs "practiced" to play, (note: he had actually forgotten the lyrics, as well as music to), he then turned around and said to his bandmates, "I don't like it anymore than you guys do but it's our JOB, we have to play."

WHO SAYS THAT!?!

And at the beginning of the show he started by himself and made a shitty comment, "Well am I just gonna do this all by myself?" Waiting for his band members to come out.

And I like Brand New, so this all coming from a fan - pretty big let down.

i was there too, and jesse looked like he was having a fun time. i think the band in general were disapointed there werent more faces in the crowd from when i talked to vinnie, he was like, are uva students only allowed to come or something? jesse was laughing on stage and having a good time, making fun of himself for messing up and cracking jokes to vin. i think part of the reason they dont like seventy times 7 has to deal with the whole tbs thing being over and the song doesnt have meaning to them anymore. stop crying, we REQUESTED it and they PLAYED it, give the world a break. and to the last thing you said, a lot of jokes are said on stage. if that was a pretty big let down, thats sad. they did play music too, ass.

On Wikipedia, it says that 5 is actually not titled cleanser, that was just a mistake based on references jesse made on a radio interview about an 8 minute song and since 5 is almost 8 minutes someone thought it was cleanser or something.

I don't know if that's actually the truth but I just throught I'd put it out there.

Good Job Jesse - All in All could've been better but really understood because that was the first show in a long time ---- P

and you all werent even there when brand new did their FIRST sound check. they jammed these two amazing songs for a few minutes each.

but that first one they opened with it's called "yeah" on the setlist (that i have) was just incredible. me and kevin were just looking at each other like "is this srsly happening"

btw, i got the FULL video of Play Crack the Sky up on my myspace videos (http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individua l&videoid=659341750&n=2). the ending gives me goosebumps.

i got there right at noon.
my friend sara and i were the very first ones at the stage.
(after a quick trip to the moon bounce! yesss!!)
(i know what you're thinking...brand new AND moonbounces? fuck yes)
they started setting up around 1/1:30 and did a check around 2 or 2:30. so you had probably just missed it.
i tried calling kevin so he could hear it but he didnt answer.
but they were pretty beast jams.

The first line of the song was 'Giving up on sex'....and I think the chorus had 'I can't do this on my own.' - and that line was literally belted at the top of Jesse's lungs. It sounded unlike anything they had ever written before, and me and my friends' jaws were dropped for most of the song. I was the dude in the faded purpley/blue Boston Red Sox hat.

The best song I've ever seen live, in my life, was Tautou right before Christmas of 200...3 or 4, I forget. They played it unbelievably slow, and dragged it out for at least 5 minutes, probably longer. Jesse wandered over to the speakers to create feedback for a while, and just set the mood so well. I was amazed, and it gave me a new love for a song I almost always skipped over before that show.

Yes, the show was free, but Brand New got paid to perform. As a band, wouldn't you want to sound your best before playing a show? Brand New played very well, but they could have been better.
