Most of our music isn't good. The OC is where it's at (Thrice, Eye Alaska). My advice: go to The Knitting Factory, Troubadour, Roxy, and El Rey's websites and look at their calenders. We're lucky we have so many venues, but I'd say stick to touring bands rather than local ones.
