View Full Version : ESPN needs to get off Tad Idguchi's balls

yeah sweet nice play... too bad when youre throwing out BENGIE MOLINA, any nice play you make is overshadowed by the fact that you could probably beat that dude to first if you were starting in left field. if its not molina running on that play, idguchi probably doesnt throw out anyone else in the league.
also, they shouldn't be going over the play because he FELL DOWN. The only reason it looked so amazing is that he tripped when scooping up the ball and was falling so he just randomly threw the ball. It's like when jeter caught the ball while running and then dove into the stands, blown way out of proportion.

Finally, someone who I see eye to eye with on the Jeter play. People tell me I'm retarded when I say David Wright diving into the stands in Seattle was a better play than Jeter's catch. Jeter caught the ball in foul territory and almost broke his face jumping into the stands..couldn't he have slid into the wall or just stopped his momentum? He didn't have to spread out in midair and jump into the third row. Now Wright's catch he dove into the stands without even looking and caught the ball in midair. Then again..I could just be biased. I've heard every aexcuse why Jeter's was better: 1) Jeter's meant more, that game was important..Seattle and NY were out of the playoffs when Wright made that catch, 2) Jeter was heroic, he sacraficed himself for the team. I fucking hate Jeter.
Anyway, yeah..Iguchi's throw was nice and stuff, but if he hadn't fell it's just another routine play in the field. Plus, Molina runs like a snail.

Jeter's catch was basically the same catch that any catcher makes when they reach into the stands, minus the unnecessary, dramatic tumble at the end. if that were someone like j.j hardy of the milwaukee brewers , it woulda been like the #3 webgem of the night.
granted, it's still a webgem ...but not exactly the play of the year.

DUDE, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. Wright sacrificed himself for the team more. He physically jumped into the stands WITHOUT THE BALL. He couldn't brace himself for the fall because he had to make the catch while in midair. Plus, wright dived into the stands of an opposing ballpark, where fans can do something crazy to him. I just watched the jeter video again on you tube. JETER WAS IN FAIR TERRITORY WHEN HE CAUGHT THE BALL!!!. He could have just slowed down, or slid on the ground, or veered to the right because the wall cut off to the right and there was more room, but instead he fucking runs into the stands and all of a sudden he is the best "team player" in the world. GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK!

jeter is a hell of a team player, let's not try and dispute that because it's clearly the case. he is the face of the yankees and deservedly so, but that's still the most overrated catch in recent memory.

the jeter play is bullshit. ill argue to the death that he couldve braced himself on the wall.
that said, the one handed barehand dave wright catch from last year is the play of the century on defense.

Plus, Jeter's catch was the 'Play of the Year' but Wright's catch did not even make the Web Gems that night. I thought that was so bizzare..it wasn't a web gem. It was #1 on Sportscenter though. Wright's barehanded catch was still the best though. That's another thing I hate..Yankee fans who say "Showoff! He could have used his glove." Umm..watch the video, he would have dropped it or pulled a muscle if he tried to reach with his glove.

If I had to make any cases for Jeter..I would say his best play was the one in Oakland. That flip play was nuts and he jumped out of nowhere. Other than that, that dive into the stands catch is overrated.

Even that play I think is overrated a ton because of how many times it has been shown and repeated. Definetely a great play, but everything is blown our of proportion when you are in a Yankee uni.
Iguchi's play was pretty good, but like stated here, nothing special. I was actually worried sportscenter would have it as it's number one play instead of the teams honoring Jackie Robinson, it was number two, though.

Kinda like Pokey Reese did earlier in the same game. He made basically the exact same catch, maybe even a little better, and because he was capable of stopping before diving into the stands it gets overlooked.

there's a reason jeter's play is one of the greatest of all time, and its not from his fucking image
Derek Jeter's play was the definiation of maximimum effort
who cares of it was possible for him to stop
who cares if pokey reese was going faster.
he didn't want to slam his face into the seats, thats for sure.
jeter is the ideal baseball player, he has it all.
david wright's catch was great and is comparable to jeter's, and he did sacrifice his body, in my opinion i'd take jeter's but its very very arguable.
how can any bad talk jeter? it's just pure red sox/mets nation trying to down play the yankee's domination

Really the only thing here thats worth debating. I would argue that defensive metrics such as UZR and RAA (from hardballtimes.com) have Jeter well below average defensive SS. Both measure how many runs a fielder costs in range. Hardballtimes has him at -15.7 in 2005. What that means is, in 2005 he cost the team 15.7 runs on defense.

repetitive? Yes. but the fact that pokey reese makes virtually the same play, yet is able to stop, shows that jeter's play is more about what he did after the catch than the actual catch itself. also, i responded to your post that appeared to be a list, which is why it's repetitive. you could take my first 4 or 5 answers and lump them into one for your first 4 or 5 lines of your post. If he didn't want to face plant into the wall, he should have slowed down and braced himself against the wall. every time i've seen it, it looks like, to me, he'd be able to brace himself against the wall and still make the catch.
I really don't think jeter has phenominal range. He's got an above average arm, but it's by no means best in the majors. arod's a better shortstop than jeter, imo.

04/16/06, 09:27 PM

I was only kidding about everyone hating on Jeter.
As for the Iguchi play, I see what you're saying that it only wound up looking like a good play because he fucked up in the beginning of it. But to be able to regain his composure after tripping was pretty impressive. And it's something different so that's why ESPN is going to show it left and right.

i wouldn't say he regained his composure to throw a ball he had no business in throwing. 9/10 times that's over the 1B head and the guy is in scoring position. but i do know why they're showing, however, they might want to take a step back. it's not terribly impressive.

manny may be "a bum" but not many people walking around right now go for 45 HRs and 140 RBIs every year. Bum or not, i'd take that on my team any day of the week.

Better all around player: David Wright
Let's face it..Jeter can't hit home runs unless the spotlight is on him. He' hits like 8 Home Runs all year then goes crazy in the playoffs because its "Jeter Time." David Wright plays all around better in the regular season and his catch (both of them) would fuck Jeter's play in the ass then cum on it's face and not wake it up in the morning to say it was leaving.

Yeah, biased sounds right, haha. I'm just messing with ya. I'm biased for the Yankees so obviously I like Jeter's catch better. Whatever. As for Iguchi's play, I thought it was a nice play, no matter who it was that he threw out.
You can rip me apart if you want, we're Rangers fans. That's all that matters. I won't get mad. Haha

wait, so you wouldn't want someone who steps up to the pressure and is clutch with homeruns in the post season in favor of a kid who has had 1 great year in the big leagues (wright will be amazing)? that doesn't make sense to me. I can understand an argument for not wanting jeter, but this wasn't one of them.

I'm joking. I just hate Jeter..never said I wouldn't want him on my team in the playoffs. Still, I wouldn't build my team around him..we can't make the playoffs unless he does well with his bat and his glove during the regular season too. Maybe I'm just upset because he owned us in the 2000 World Series.

probably. mikeford made a good point, he'd be an excellent 2B. but there's other shortstops i'd take over him now. I'm a big jeter fan, though.

I never forgot how he lead off Game 5 with a first pitch homerun..ugh, it pissed me off so much.

Yeah man I could never have beef with you. Rangers fans man! I'm sure you don't like the fact that I'm a Yankees fan though, haha. But don't worry I don't really hate the Mets or anything so I won't be talking shit about them.

Honestly I don't hate the Yankees, just Jeter. LoL My dad is a Yankee fan so I've been used to watching them and stuff. One of my favorite players has always been Bernie Williams actually.

Because every Yankee fan on earth makes him look like the greatest player that ever lived. Honestly..he's really good, but almost all Yankee fans credit him with being their best player when they have a roster full of million dollar stars. It gets annoying.
Now if I wanted to get on your good side..I would say Pudge and Yzerman are the two best players in any sport ever created..come on, am I right?

haha. i was seriously just curious. the hype around him get's annoying. and especially since i live basically in the same place he grew. like his high school's 20 mins away from me. So i get plenty of hype about him. He's really good but overhyped, imo.
And you're half right. I abso-fucking-lutely hate pudge and would love nothing more than to see him traded. however, steve yzerman should just go straight into the hall of fame right after he retires, no waiting period required. i think he's the best captain in hockey (maybe sports) history.

Statistically, Mark Messier is better..BUT, as for team leader, Yzerman for sure. Messier means so much to me because of 94, but Detroit was like the Hockey gods because of Yzerman.
Now if I were a Yankee fan I would say:
Yzerman who? Derek Jeter is the greatest captain in the history of sports.

Thats funny because my best friend and I totally hate Jeter too. Im a Mariners fan and he loves the White Sox and we both cannot stand the guy
Ill give him that he is clutch and can hit for average but..
really look at A-Rod...the guy gets SO much shit because he has a quarter of a billion dollar contract but he is seriously better than Jeter in nearly every way..More power, speed, hits for higher average, better defensively..
Jeter in my opinion is so overrated his best season came 7 years ago in 1999 and he has been declining since, whereas A-Rod's season last year could arguably be his best out of some spectacular seasons.

Haha as soon as I read that you were a Mariners fan I started laughing because I knew you would hate Jeter really bad. Haha.

I would take Crosby, Tejada, and Peralta over Jeter. I would also take 2000 nomar and pre-3B A-rod over Jeter.

The one thing I hate about being hating Jeter is that he seems like such a nice person. So whether or not you hate other fans overhyping him or something, that shouldn't mean you should hate him personally. But anyways, good call with Bernie. I hope he has a great season this year and retires. Go out with a bang.
