View Full Version : Brand New, Jesse Lacey, and Indian Summer

I won't type out one of my classy introduction paragraphs leading into my thoughts. I'll just lay them out.
I think Lacey was influenced and or is "borrowing" from the influential emo band Indian Summer.
-"Vices" from Daisy uses their trademarked technique of starting songs off with old jazz vinyls playing.
-The intro to "Jesus Christ" off of The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me has the same D/B, D chord progression and is picked similar.
Thoughts? Maybe it's just me?

I wouldn't say so. I drew the obvious similarities between the two riffs right away; anyone who knows the songs could, and the idea on Vice kinda just hit me.
I don't know. It's probably coincidence, but I thought I'd bring it to some other people's attention.

Never listened to Indian summer, but you called them an influential emo band. So brand new, being an emo band, being influenced by them seems to make sense.

while it's a nice thought, indian summer wasn't even the first band to do this sort of thing, so i doubt that jesse lacey is taking notes from them.

I wasn't aware. I guess I haven't explored the innovative antics of early emo enough besides IS. I just got the idea in the first place from the similarities between Angry Son and Jesus Christ, and when I heard the vinyl thing I just thought it may have been a reference or something.

lucabomb is a term that the regulars of the brand new thread call the part in "luca" where the instruments come in and frighten the listener. then someone told david(the personist) that arguing with him didnt work because his 'cronies' would back him up, then we jokingly called ourselves "team lucabomb"
examples?
-"I never thought this day would end / i never thought tonight could ever be this close to me" from "logan to government center" is stolen from "close to me" by the cure.
-the solo to "good to know that if i ever need attention all i have to do is die" is stolen from the Eagles' "hotel california"
-a lot of the lyrics from "i will play my game beneath the spinlight" are stolen from "chumming the ocean" by Archers of Loaf
-"the boy who blocked his own shot" is a similar title to the smiths' "the boy with a thorn in his side" though they sound nothing alike
-"take me out tonight" from "millstone" is stolen from "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" by the Smiths
-"the demon in the attic to the left" from "Degausser" is stolen from "Bloody Hammer" by Roky Erikson
these are just a few examples.

I doubt any of that is intentional, and if it is, that's pretty awesome.

im pretty sure it's intentional. jesse lacey tries really hard to be morrissey. and he has said that he's influenced by the cure. if you watch the imx interview with brand new, vinnie admits that he ripped off the eagles. jesse lacey admitted to stealing the degausser lyric from roky erikson. brand new is influenced by archers of loaf.

i do see some similiarities... but if he did 'steal' the lines, its not to pawn off as his own, it would be more of an homage. i.e. he uses a lot of poetry references and literary references in his songs, so if he used musical references as well it wouldn't be much different.
you did do a good job of making your point though

Same chords, written on the same tempo, even Vin's guitar parts were way too similar. You could basically take the vocals out and sing "Yellow" on top of it and it will sound like the original.

yeah & that's a rip off of journey and the beatles and a thousand other bands.
those four chords are some of the most common chords in existence.
