I love the horror thread and figured us Sci-Fi fans could also crawl out of the woodwork to get some good discussions going on. Rec, review, discuss, let's talk Sci-Fi whether it be film, novels, or what have you. Any other fans?
Time Travel is confusing, Aliens do not come in peace, Lost in Space is never fun, Post-Apocalyptic wastelands, Killer Machines on the loose, Cyberpunk and good old Star Wars. Let's discuss it here.
I watchedTarkovsky's Solaris again the other day, it'd been awhile since I last watched. Such a great film all around, as well as adaptation. I really wish Soderbergh could have kept his together, it really fell apart fast.
Bought Escape From New York and remembered how much fun that movie is, to be ruined by a remake.

Love Titan A.E. Probably one of the best animated films of all-time, so well-done and interesting plot just as a film in general.
also, event horizon is another awesome movie. more thriller than sci-fi kind of, but either way it's a lot of fun.

Alien, Star Trek: Wrath of Khan and First Contact, Sunshine, Solaris, 2001: Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Star Wars (original), and Minority Report.
Sky Captain is interesting for the idea they were going for, the style and setting is very nice. But it wasn't executed very well. I'd give it a 3/5 at best, enjoyable and worth a wastch.
I fully support this thread.
I'm actually watching Alien right now. And to answer the above question, my favorite sci-fi movie is 12 Monkeys. But I think everyone's already figured that one out.
12 Monkeys is a curious favorite, never knew it had such love. I like it but never got into fully. Perhaps I need to rewatch it.
always haha. i havnt seen the final season yet, so im hanging out to find out who the final cylon is.
Haha, the last cylon was handed poorly, I think. That's all I'll say, it was a great idea but they just didn't explain it or set it up well at all.
what do you guys think of that list?
10. Minority Report
It's hard to think of it being remade simply because it came out not that long ago and nothing was missing. The effects were all excellent and it was cast so well. There's no reason to imagine it needing it being remade.
09. Close Encounters of a Third Kind
The sort of untouchable classic, much like E.T.. They may want to remake it for the better visuals they can achieve now but I don't see it as necessary. The film stands on its own.
08. A Clockwork Orange
McDowell's performance makes this unremakeable. No one else should try to. Kubrick films do not need remakes.
07. Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind.
Unnecessary.
06. E.T.
See Close Encounters.
05. Gattaca
This one I actually disagree on, I think a remake of this 5 or 10 years down the road might actually be very interesting. I love the movie, but didn't enjoy the whole cast (Thurman being first on my mind haha). I don't feel this film has that "untouchable" status. They should wait and perhaps make slight changes, but this film could spawn an interesting remake.
04. Dark City
I'm not sure, I love this movie but would be very curious to see a remake. It would almost certainly would not be very good unless they got a director worth his shit like Nolan or something. I'd say better safe then sorry though and stay away from this one.
03. Stalker
I would've preferred Solaris take this film's place, but this one much like almost all Tarkovsky's work is visually perfect and executed brilliantly. I don't think today's Hollywood could touch this on any points, a foreign remake might be interesting but it would need to be more of an inspired remake as opposed to a straight-up remake.
02. Blade Runner
Agreed 100%, perfect film. Should have been number 1. No one could do better than anyone cast in this film, the director or visual effects people. Perfect, in my opinion.
01. 2001: Space Odyssey
Same with Clockwork, shouldn't be remade merely because there wouldn't be any betterment. This would prove more interesting and possibly even a good film, but no where close to the original. This shouldn't be number 1 though.
A solid list, only one I disagreed with. I can see why each of these would be on here, though.
I have seen all but Stalker and Dark City (which I will be watching soon for September MDC), but I agree as well, just thought it was an interesting list.
Both are excellent.

Tarkovsky's films tend to be missed a lot. Watch his Solaris if you haven't. But yes, Stalker is excellent.

I think the list is decent but the Sci-Fi choice is most definitely wrong. District 9 was clearly a summer film where Moon would more than likely do much better in the late fall or winter.
The least to me seemed backward, haha. 3 out of the 5 to me seem like summer films, where as I can see the other two not being in the mix. But I still have yet to see District 9, need to.

I'm sure I'm missing a few but off the top of my head these are my favorite sci-films. Do post apocalyptic films like the Road Warrior count as sci-fi?
1. 12 Monkeys
2. Donnie Darko
3. Eternal Sunshine
4. A Scanner Darkly
5. Back to the Future I and II
6. Minority Report
7. Terminator 2
8. Sunshine (would have been much higher except the third act fucking sucked)
9. Fifth Element
10.Men in Black
Saw it in theaters when I was 13 and absolutely loved. I haven't seen it since and am I'm pretty sure I wouldn't care for anymore
It does but considering it comes out it Sept that's not a really good sign. For the most part September is a dumping ground for atrocious movies
I still don't get the love for 2001 A Space Odyssey.. The quote on the DVD cover calling it "the greatest sci-film of all time" is ludicrous.
Shit was fucking terrible and took me four sittings to finish it
I understand not enjoying it, but it's pretty widely accepted as the greatest sci-fi film of all-time and a good deal of people call it one of the greatest films of all-time period. I don't think that label is ludicrous at all and the film is far from terrible. Boring maybe, but definitely not terrible.
Thomas Balkcom
09/04/09, 07:34 AM
I was under the impression it was extremely polarizing to both critics and filmgoers
Even my dad, who I've never heard call a movie boring, saw it back in 1968 and thought it was the most boring, not to mention shitty , movie he'd ever seen. And this a dude that pretty much exclusively watches old school 30s-60s films
There may be varying opinions among your average filmgoer, but you rarely hear a critic/ cineaste/ cinephile say much negative about it. I actually agree with it being boring but it is very far from shitty.
Thomas Balkcom
09/04/09, 07:36 AM
and I am not saying that I think your/ your dad's opinion of it is wrong; looking at objectively it is a remarkable film.

Such as?Such as saying "shit was fucking terrible" about 2001, obviously not true. I understand how someone couldn't like it, as it is vague and very airy, but to make such a claim means you don't understand how anyone could like it and shows that you really no nothing about science fiction. Then, listing a top ten that has Donnie Darko at #2 does no more than add insult to injury.
It's just hilarious to see such bold claims made about great films, only to be backed up with the shit that you actually like. I don't go for The Beatles, but I still understand enough about what they did to not call them fucking terrible.

Someone told me recently that it's because SciFi has dorky, nerdy connotations and the name change was an attempt to get more people to tune into the channel. It's idiotic. It's not like anyone will pronounce it any different or think any different about the channel with the name change.

The one thing that bugs me about BSG is that the technology isn't as cool as Star Trek's vision for it (the comparisons are unavoidable with me, sorry). The Galactica looks like a heap compared to the Enterprise, and live ammunition instead of high intensity energy beams? So messy. But then again I don't know what year BSG is set in, so if it's not the 2300s, this would be acceptable. Haha.

this is what makes BSG so good. its more realistic. and if you watch it, you realise that the galactica is a heap. its about to be decomissioned at the beginning of the show. its old. its not supposed to be the pride of the fleet like the enterprise is. and BSG is head and shoulders above star trek imo :-p

Based on a graphic novel (called The Surrogates) that is really more of a short story, imo. Really great, quick read that I think looks ridiculously cheesy on screen, but might translate well. Shows that race and gender mean nothing, because the users of the surrogates can select what race they want to be and what sex, and when you are stripped of those two classifications, all you are really left with is religion and that the prejudices we are raised with are going to be there no matter what ethnicity we are or if we're male or female. It's super thought-provoking and I'd definitely rec. the book to anyone into science-fiction.

The Cosmonaut is a story about memories. Even those memories which never existed.
October 1975. Stan is getting ready to be the first Russian cosmonaut on the Moon. Andrei, his friend since childhood, is directing the mission. In the stressful previous days to the departure, Stan thinks about Yulia, Andrei's wife. She thinks about him too, while they finalize the details for the mission. They've been together in painful silence for years. Just two days after the launch, the spaceship loses all communication with Earth. For six months, Andrei looks for his friend day and night.
Without success.
One day, the ship comes back to Earth. Once it falls down, there is no trace of the Cosmonaut.
Uncertainty grows as a series of radio transmission begin: Stan speaks from an unknown place. He claims to have come back to Earth and found it empty. Stan's delusions, a prisoner in an impossible world, start to cause tragic changes in the relationship between Andrei and Yulia. While she can't stop listening to the radio through which the cosmonaut constantly talks about an imaginary paradise where he shares the life he dreamt of with her, Andrei becomes a stranger in his own house, inhabited by the voice of an old friend who was declared dead months ago.
Little by little, a strange and dangerous triangle is formed.
Finally, the reunion takes place.

haha has anyone looked at the store? theres a pencil with this description In 1960 Nasa asks the Fisher Pen Company to produce 400 pens with injection ink, capable of working under low or null gravity for the Apollo Missions. The project costs 1.5 million dollars. Meanwhile, in Glavkosmos, Russia; they faced the same problem.
They used a pencil.
I haven't watched any of the Stargate since the second season of the first, SG1 I think is what it's called haha. Need to catch up.
I saw the first and thought it was decent, but have had no desire to see the second, I dunno if I ever will, probably will when a brother rents it or something.

Yeah, it's one of those shows I'll begin watching straight through once I graduate or something and have more free time. Atlantis from what I've seen is pretty good, but I haven't watched much. I know the Dr. from Star Trek Voyager is on it so that makes me curious.

the beginning of bsg season 4 was really disappointing to me, as i felt they over dramatized everything and the show basically devolved into shouting and pointing guns at each other every single episode. but, halfway through it seems to be getting a lot better..

sublte differences. the biggest is that the original has a voice over at the begining that gives away the main plot story. The thought behind it was that it makes the film easier to follow, making its appeal broader. Most fans, along with the director who was forced to add it, hated it for giving away to much too soon.
Just about everything else was little changes. Its a better movie, but not tons better.

Ha, I guess I did let it go, because I haven't watched it since. It was weird because we watched the first episode in class, and for some reason she decided after the first episode to skip a lot and have us watch a few episodes ahead, and I hate watching a series out of order, so there was kind of a disconnection with the series because I missed some. firefly is one of those shows where when one ep finishes i just want to watch the next straight away

Yeah, I've been definitely needing to catch up on so many shows, Firefly being near the top of the list. After I watch Torchwood: Children of Earth, hopefully I can move onto Firefly next because it really does seem like a great show (except for two of the actors that annoy me for some reason, haha)

The girl who plays Kaylee and the girl who plays River just bother me for some reason. Maybe once I actually watch more of the series I'll grow to like them. It wouldn't be the first time it happened.

Eh, I don't think she's anything special in the looks department, though to be fair every time I see her she's all hunched in on herself with tousled hair hanging in front of her face, so that could very well be the reason haha.

Oh yeah, I heard that from somewhere. I've never actually seen anything Terminator related, which just goes to show how many movies/shows I never watch.

Hell yes.
I finally just finished the series by watching The Plan last night. It might be the best TV show ever. And The Plan kind of helped alleviate the bad taste "Daybreak" left in my mouth.

Eh. I didn't care for The Plan at all...it didn't add anything to the series imo. Just a collection of highlights.

I think it helped cover their asses on a lot of plot holes. Which it needed to.
Major fail on still not explaining Starbuck.

Alien Trespass was one of the worst I saw last year. Couldn't even make it through 15 minutes.
well damn.
he was sort of right, I've seen alot worse....but they failed to really capture the feel of 50's campy sci fi, the look was all good minus some CGI that stuck out badly. The acting was probably the worst part, bad acting is funny when its unintentional, but when its purposefully there's just nothing enjoyable or comical about it.

Personally I didn't really care about the holes. I like it when there are some parts in a movie or series you have to fill in by yourself, instead of having them handed to you.
