So a friend of mine always talk about albums and what not, and we've come to a realization and agreement. The first song on any album is always good. This excludes anything that has an "intro" or whatever. Basically just the first real song of the album.

We've both yet to find a song by a band that we do like that doesn't have a good first song. Anyone think different?

Yeah i'll agree with that. Most of the time its sick

That is true. I'm guessing they choose an opener based on the impact it will have, because they want it to give enough of an impression for the listener to keep listening to the rest of the album. Although often I've found that the opener is the highlight of the album.

this is generally true. if the first song is one of the weaker songs, listeners, especially the casual listener, won't bother listening to much more. however, this does not hold true if the music is crap anyways. crap music is crap no matter where you put it.

I agree with this. Wait, except for Say Anything (Else) by Cartel. I'm sure a lot of people love it, but I just don't care for it that much.

If the opener isn't good, then the album usually won't be (though i do agree with fanberlinboy, say anything else is lackluster)

If I were to make an album, I'd want to make it like a crescendo of musical orgasms.

Like this:

1- Nice tune dude.
2- Hey, this is actually really good.
3- Holy shit.

it's not always the best song, but it's usually one that pulls you in. if the first track doesn't hook you, chances are the album is probably going to be a dud.

I agree as well. To me, the opener and closer to a record anre the two most crucials songs on a record for me. If the opener and/or closer don't cut it for me, that record will automatically becomes less special to me.

Whether right or wrong, it still doesn't change the fact that if we don't talk about them, they go away. They're like annoying little brothers that just want attention.

Actually i think the 4th song is always the best on the cd.

My best friend in high school and I actually had this theory and confirmed it a number of times. Though the opener is usually good as well. I think maybe a 4th song is sweet rule is more applicable now...

On The Black Parade album the first track isnt all that great. I suppose it is a bit of an intro. But the second track 'Dead!' is sick! It kicks off with a KILLER intro solo. Then again, The Black Parade is a concept album.

Im going through my iTunes right now cd by cd and its absurd how many times its either my favorite song or one of my favorites on the album. It's a conspiracy.

I've been trying for a few years now to find an album with a bad first song. Not working.

depends on what you listen to so i can pick a track we can level on. What genres are you into?

If i were to pick something in my collection, track 1 "Mayfield" off Augustana's All the Stars and Boulevards is the weakest off the album

Not really a conspiracy. Bands put songs that are going to kick you in the ass first on the CD. Bands usually know which songs are going to be majority favorites of their fans (for the most part, but definitely not always the case).

I was just stating that everything I listen to, the first track is always good. I wanted to see if anyone has an album they listen to, where they find the first song not to be good.

I'm unimpressed with HTL's "Count It!", but that probably counts as an intro track.

Chromefox
09/01/09, 03:25 PM
Subjective answer, because taste is subjective. Odds are that if you like an album, then nearly every song on it you'd consider to be "good", and thus the quality of the very first track is somewhat irrelevant. Similarly, if you hate an album and think every song on it sucks, then the first track is pretty much moot.

Least favorite track off of Fear Before The March Of Flames' Art Damage is track 1 "Hey Kid, I'm A Computer, Stop All The Downloading".

Some that stand out to me
Underoath - Breathing in a New Mentality
Eminem - White America
The Fall of Troy - I Just Got this Symphony Goin'/Cut Down All the Trees and Name the Streets After Them/Panic Attack!
A Day to Remember - The Downfall of Us All

i think of third or fourth as where you put the single, not necessarily the best song.

The first song should be good, but 3-4 is where the album should really shine. Just like in baseball.

Agreed. That's one of the best songs of the year. Of course the album is one of the best albums of the year, so no surprise there. But upon first listen that was the only song that really blew me away. It's awesome.

If the band has a single you can bet it's in the first three tracks.

Sadly the majority of albums are ment to be top heavy. It makes you want to listen to the songs that aren't so good.
