Owl City - Ocean Eyes
Record Label: Universal Republic
Release Date: July 28, 2009

I'm not 100 percent assured of what compelled me to write this. Maybe it was the biased reviews on AllMusic and Spin, or maybe it was my indescribable desire for positivity in a world of music where it's definitely lacking as the norm. Either way, here it goes.

Owl City, the musical alias of Adam Young, released his Universal Republic debut Ocean Eyes. The full-length is jam-packed with layers and layers of synthesizers, MIDI programming, and an innocent vocal flair. What makes this a bit different from most electronica acts is its undeniable driving rhythm, especially in tracks "Cave In" and "Hello, Seattle" along with guest vocals from the very similar sounding Matt Thiessen of Relient K.

Young uses a combination of analog instruments, such as guitars and drums, mixed with artificial drum loops and sweetly composed synths (see the track "Saltwater Room"), for the goal of making a lasting impact amongst the young at heart. The ethereal mix is undeniably catchy, and I just can't help but see The Postal Service resurrected in Young's compositions. The only difference between these two acts is that Young tends to get simplistic with his lyrics. Other than this, fans of the Gibbard/Tamborello duo would find Owl City quite refreshing.

Ocean Eyes begins with "Cave In," which can only be referred to as the perfect lead-off track, personifying all that Ocean Eyes was intended for, i.e. digital symphony. "The Bird and the Worm," which was written by both Young and Thiessen, starts with an acoustic guitar before mixing the "Mac Attack" programming loops. "Hello, Seattle" is one of the best tracks on the album with the rhythm and hooks clicking on all cylinders. "Umbrella Beach" is a dance-club anthem; all that's missing is a waving glowstick. The album slows down a bit with "The Saltwater Room," a beautiful track with guest vocals from Breanne Duren (Swimming With Dolphins).

"Dental Care" is a pretty simple track about a trip to the dentist an ode to good oral hygiene, I suppose. My personal favorite is "On the Wing," a beautifully layered track similar to "Hello, Seattle," but it adds just a bit of electronic charisma and those darn synths. "Fireflies," the single off of Ocean Eyes, starts off very lullaby-esque before breaking into a powerful chorus, as Young sings "I'd like to make myself believe / That Planet Earth turns slowly / It's hard to say that I'd / Rather stay awake when I'm asleep / 'Cause everything is never as it seems".

The rest of Ocean Eyes flails a little bit and tends to be more redundant than pleasant. However overall, this is a solid album.

I liked your review. Fair. I think this is one of the best albums of all time, so I am a little to biased. "The Bird and the Worm" totally reminds me of a Relient K song.

You might know this, but that's because Matthew Thiesssen, Relient K's singer, helped with production and did guest vocals on several songs, The Bird and the Worm being one of them.

This was a decent effort. Very talented artist delivering fantastically atmospheric tracks. However, I would have to say that my favourite track was still Hello Seattle, a recycle from Of June. So. With that being said. Decent. No more. No less.

i agree with the postal service comparison. my little sister is in love with owl city...and when i told her that it just sounds like a postal service rip off...she didn't even know who the postal service is!!!! a whole new generation of kids are being exposed to a watered-down, less intelligent, albeit sometimes more catchy version of one of the coolest bands that came out during my early 20's. please...anyone under the age of say...21...do yourself a favor and listen to the Postal Service...or even Styrofoam...both groups that pioneered what Owl City is doing now...

Couldn't have said it better myself. But you could also argue the same for most bands in the current scene. For example, I could say that All Time Low is a New Found Glory rip-off. It's just the way it is. I didn't want to come off as trite by saying that Adam is ripping off of The Postal Service, but that I could seriously hear their music resurrected in Young's compositions (wow, that's ver batum what I said in the review lol). I'm not ashamed to like Owl City's music, to be honest. This genre is only good when it's done right, and I believe that Owl City does it right.

I feel you on this. I would much rather listen to The Postal Service, but Owl City is catchy and cute.

The bird and the worm is one of my favorite songs off the album. Most of the songs sound alike but I enjoy that about it. When I listen to this album it makes me just automatically happy! Which I know is always a good thing.

I don't think it's surprising that younger people haven't heard of the postal service. I don't agree that there's a "whole new generation of kids" who are getting a "watered-down, less-intelligent" version of the postal service. I mean, heck, they're still around and kids these days are in a similar generation as us. With the internet, we all have access to the Postal Service's first stuff anyways. I don't think it's offensive to them if kids these days like Owl City without knowing about the Postal Service.

One of the best albums of all time for sure. Maybe THE best.

I see I'm not the only one that compares them to The Postal Service. I would call them a more mellow, more "indie" version of Owl City. Even the vocals are pretty similar.

I like this review. The reviewer gave this album about what I would have given it, a C+. Is it one of the best? No, but it's pretty good. The remix of "Hello Seattle" is probably my favorite song off this album. I think people are a bit to prejudiced against Electronica (even though I do consider this somewhat rock-like). I like to keep an open mind; I listen to a lot of indie and alternative rock too (I'm a dedicated fan of Guster, the Dave Matthews Band, Oasis, Jack's Mannequin, and Something Corporate, among others).

Umbrella Beach is the catchiest shit I've heard in a very long time. That's all I wanted to say.
