Just to inform all of you saying that the French owe us, let me just remind you that we modeled our constitution on the ideals set forth during the French Revolution

democracy as we know it would not exist without france. thanks. have a nice day.

i think what you mean is that we based our constitution on the ideas/ideals of the french philosophers during the "enlightenment", (Descartes, Voltaire). the constituiton was ratified in 1787, and the french revolution occured in 1789.

I don't know much about Voltaire except he's the guy who said, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." I think. anyway, I love that, because I totally believe in freedom of speech. Also, I think he wrote Candide, from which Forrest Gump is loosely based on. I love that movie, so I'm thinking I'll buy that book.

here is some more voltaire (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7308/):

LET the punishments of criminals be useful. A hanged man is good for nothing, and a man condemned to public works still serves the country, and is a living lesson.

Let all laws be clear, uniform and precise: to interpret laws is almost always to corrupt them.

Let nothing be infamous save vice.

Let taxes be always proportional
