Boh Runga – Right Here
Record Label: Katipo
Release Date: June 23, 2009
Boh Runga has a particular distinction. She is an artist from one of my favorite countries on Earth, New Zealand. Thus, it was only logical for me to check out her work and then review her album. On her debut solo album, Boh plays some sweet indie pop that ranges from beautifully sparse to boringly generic.
The album opens with “Starfish Sleeping,” a sweet song that only turns out to be average musically. “Evelyn” follows, with catchy handclaps and a beautiful chorus. “Dark Horse” has sweet lyrics that just explode into a beautiful chorus. “Airwaves,” the album’s longest song, is a sparse number that fluctuates constantly between interesting and boring. “Be Careful” features guest vocals from System of A Down frontman Serj Tankian, and features an off-kilter drum/vocal layering in the beginning. “Home” has some great opening strumming, though Boh’s voice gets a little annoying towards the middle. “Names in the Sand” is catchy and sweet. “This Old Heart,” though a respectable song, is nothing special, while “Cautionary Tale” just contains a memorable intro. The final two songs on the album are pure joys, “The Sky And The Earth” and “Right Here.” Both are highlights of this album due to their gorgeous melodies and beautiful vocals.
Overall, this is a good solo debut from Boh Runga. High points include “Evelyn,” “Cautionary Tale,” “The Sky And The Earth,” and “Right Here.”
