and the idea that the US office is better than the original is so laughable it hurts me. the american office is just a dumbed down version of the english one, only without the comedy. steve carrell doesn't come near the original genius that is david brent and then they glamourise the tim and dawn story, with better looking people. it's become a joke. the original is perfection and my favourite comedy show of all time.

This is interesting to read, because the whole idea of humor is such a cultural thing. I was reading an article that was talking about jokes around the world and it was saying how in the US people are looking more for the big punchline, or the big guffaw at the end of a joke where as in the UK, actually laughing out loud is kind of looked down upon, its more about dry wit. And many other countries have other completely different ideas about what is funny.

So it's really interesting to see people arguing over what is funny, especially from different cultures. To each their own, I guess

Someone from the UK is not going to agree that Seinfeld is one of the best comedies of all time, simply because it's a very American sense of humor. Just as someone from the US is most likely not going to agree that The Office (UK) is one of the best comedies of all time, because it displays a very British sense of humor. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that it's only the first season of the US version of The Office that is a direct re-write of the UK's The Office. (This is a very generalized statement, I know, but I meant it to be).

I, for one, voted for Arrested Development. Main Reason being that the writing was pure genius. So many of the jokes were interwoven with each other throughout the entire series, and the actors incorporated so much improv that just made the show. I hate Fox for cancelling the show (especially while crap like Dollhouse manages to stay afloat somehow).

This is what my best friend said and now he refuses to watch the show. It's also what I thought when I first watched it, but I gave it a chance and watched on. By the time I got to episode seven I thought it was amazing. Now I think it's one of the funniest shows ever along with Arrested Development and Curb Your Enthusiasm.

As for my favourite on that list, it has to be Scrubs. It's definitely not the funniest but it's my personal favourite.

I actually kind of forced it at first. But sometimes you have to in order to see how funny it is. At least that's how it is for me. The office and A.D were both that way for me. Now, they're two of my favorite tv shows. It's all about knowing the characters WELL for both shows imo. i'm sure most would agree.

Arrested Development really isn't great unless you see it from the beginning and in order. The way that jokes come together over multiple episodes is really what makes it great. I think that's why people have such polarized opinions on the show, and why it ended up being canceled.
I think it's similar to The Office in that way. Because if you don't understand the character personalities and history, The Office is also fairly boring.

Arrested Development is absolutely brilliant. I love South Park, but AD goes waaay above and beyond.

Didn't you read what you said?!?! you have no credibility!! With good reason. You've obviously never seen more than one episode. It takes a few episodes to really understand and love the characters. There's no way in hell that one couldn't find Gob, tobius(?), buster, etc funny,. It's such a brilliant mix of both dry and silly humor. Season 3 was rather lame though. Wasn't feelin a lot of it. Stick with season 1 or 2.
It's Tobias. I still thought season 3 was good. Obviously it's not the same as 1 and 2, but I still thought it was hilarious.

comedy-wse Arrested Development and Seinfeld are my favorites... I went with AD b/c it was a choice.
