You realize they gave The Chemistry of Common Life a 8.8/10 and ranked it #17 on their Best of 2008 list? Oops, if they're a sick joke then you're the sad clown telling it.

Pitchfork is a bad magazine. Common knowledge.

Pitchfork is a bad magazine. Common knowledge.
common knowledge?
they're one of the most popular. Their the only blog that made the soundtrack for a video game, MLB 2008, or are featured as the music consultant for a tv show, let alone a network news show on ABC, or can basically take a band like Wavves and by simply liking them give them a carrer.

Right. So because they happen to like an album that I also enjoy, I'm wrong for thinking that an album comprised of pig noises is ridiculous and that Pitchfork frequently plugs music that is unique for the sake of being unique without actually being good?

How are they plugging this record? They are a music publication, and as a music publication they are supposed to report news that is relevant to the people reading their site. Did CNN "plug" Hurricane Katrina? Did ESPN "plug" Michael Vick's dogfighting? No, they reported on what was relevant to their audience. Pitchfork is doing the same. And besides, have you heard the record? Sure, the concept may sound ridiculous, but you have no idea how it's going to turn out. Who knows, maybe you'll end up in the same category as the sniveling asshole that probably said, "A deaf man composing? Who does Ludwig van Beethoven think he is?"

obvious differences in at least some music taste aside, this is really my only problem with pitchfork. nobody should wield this sort of power. i wish people liked music because they liked it, not because somebody told them to like it. although i guess that really wouldn't be a problem with the magazine itself, but rather a group of its readers.

Popularity and quality are two completely different things.
Take a listen to "Selling Advertising" by David Bazan.

While, sure, you can argue there are Pitchfork readers who may only claim to like something because Pitchfork plugged it, isn't it just as likely that they were able to give Wavves a career because they exposed them to a huge audience who ended up liking them? How many bands that you've never heard of have you checked out because they were recommended here? People just have all these preconceptions about Pitchfork because they dislike some of the music they give good reviews to. Just because one dislikes the music, doesn't mean everyone else is only pretending to, or liking it for the sake of the cred, any more than everyone touting Beggars as AOTY on this site means that.

Yes I know, but it can't be common knowledge to everyone if so many people still read it

i do agree with you there. i guess pitchfork is the easy target for that sort of criticism because a lot of lesser known bands' success is solely determined on what Pitchfork thinks of them. but it does happen here too, which i am just as much against. you should like the music because you like it, not because some website tells you to like it. i just see AP does it on a lot lesser scale than pitchfork. i really dont hate pitchfork. they're just different.

np, i mean you're right to a certain extent. As big as it is there is definitly a growing population of people that are against it.
