View Full Version : Augustine- Killing Yourself to Live (since we're not pitchfork enough for a showcase)

As man of you know my band recorded an album last March (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=902032) with the illustrious Jamie Woolford. (http://www.roomsound.com) We have been attempting to get a song featured on AP for 2 months now, and despite the backing of some staff members, have gotten AbsolutelyNowhere.
So without further ado I present to you, Killing Yourself to Live (http://www.imeem.com/augustinerock/music/3FhUowrc/augustine-killing-yourself-to-live/). This song features everyone's favorite Blue Namer, Nathan (mybreakingpoint) of The Injured List, on guest vocals.
RIYL: anything good from 1997-2003.
enjoy: http://www.imeem.com/augustinerock/music/3FhUowrc/augustine-killing-yourself-to-live/

meh... production sounds good enough... but isn't this style of music over yet? i feel like it was getting repetitive in the late 90's, yet there's still 200 bands a year popping up with the exact same style.
be more experimental and maybe you'd catch on somewhere like AP more easily... we've seen this act too many times before to be having it featured.

interesting. i would say that this is one of the 3 most "straight forward" style songs on our album. Some of the other songs have a little bit of a different style.
All I say is give the whole album a shot and then if it's still not your thing, then it's not. We posted this song because our friend Nathan sang on it and he is a member here. The other two songs we have posted(one on here and one our myspace/imeem), were just songs we love and one was the first song we ever wrote.
No worries if you aren't a fan, it's definitely not for everyone. But it's something we are definitely proud of and are actually just thankful for anyone who takes the time to listen at least once.

I'll definitely give you guys a listen, if nothing else because you asked... i try out new stuff all the time musically.
I just wanted to post my initial reactions to listening to your song, and so I did. Apologies if it was a bit harsh, I just don't mince words too often, it doesn't do anybody any good to beat around the bush about how you feel, ya know?
And like you said... things are for everyone, if I don't like it that doesn't mean that other people won't. As I mentioned, there's a bunch of bands putting out music that definitely isn't for me anymore, but they seem to be doing okay for themselves so there must be an audience somewhere for it.
Good luck to you - i'll try to listen to some more of your stuff in the future and see if my opinion changes.

No worries really. I've gotten used to the constructive criticism(i mean you should have heard our demos. they were awful hahaha). But really thanks for giving it just a chance. We love our style and aren't doing it to be the next trend(or an old dying trend for that matter). Your opinion didnt bother me at all and i know a lot of people that arent fans of the style. But luckily there are enough that do like it.
When the full albums up, I'll shoot you a message so you can at least give it a full spin or two. Thanks again for checking this out.

You would think that with what, 40k posts between me, ryan and nathan would have meant something more to staff than just getting lumped in with 10 other bands in a random "pick some bands to feature" post. It isn't so much that as we were never even told either way what would happen. I know, blah blah blah everyone is busy, but I am pretty disappointed that after all the time I have spent on this site, and the friends I have made here, my submission got more or less ignored, despite being something a lot of readers may enjoy. I know this comes off like I feel I am owed something, but that isn't my intent. Just kind of disappointed that I wasn't even told what was up by the staffer in charge of it. We are putting an album out on our own dime (many dimes actually) and it is impossible to plan promotion when people don't even so much as email you with a yes/no.

Well, you convince him of it, because he shut it down in like 4 seconds. For what the self-recording/mixing that they do, their record sounds really good, but there's parts of the record now that I think could be so improved with really good mixing. I'm not a fan of "Crazy" because of the mixing on it. I feel the lead guitar's too prevalent in the beginning and overpowers the quieter part. I think it'd do great things for them, but that's just my opinion.

We picked the most straight forwad pop/punk song on the record to put up here, because we have noticed how much people have been eating it up lately. We also didn't want to blow our load by posting our lead-off single, as it will go up on Itunes before we launch the record. There is a lot more depth to the record than this song may indicate, but we picked this song hoping it would be a good candidate for a summer feature here. Apparently aside from a few staff members who have expressed interest in the record though, everyone seems to be more interested in "progressive" sounding bands to showcase. It is what it is.

If this is an insult to you, I apologize, but it reminds me of early Forgive Durden (mainly the vocals) with early Fueled by Ramen stuff. I guess Jamie's presence doesn't hurt for that reason.
Anyway, I know I've done a bad job at sticking to my word about getting in touch, but I think it's good late-90's emo/pop-punk that should please people who know and enjoy that sound. I don't do anything like Unsigned Showcase or Exclusives, so you're better off emailing GPress or Julia for stuff like that. Not sure if you've spoken to Blake or not. I sent the song to GPress on July 3rd. It went up for voting in the staff forum with like 10 or 15 other bands in a thread, and no one seemed to even know it was there. I was supposed to hear back about it and never did. I know Anton found it, and said he had already voted for the song and didn't even realize it was us (or something like that). As I said before it seems like staff is more interested in featuring other styles of music judging by what has gone up as unsigned showcases lately, and that is fine. But we have money to recoup, so waiting to get this song featured couldn't go on any longer, so here it is.

See personally I wouldn't have them mix that album. While I think it would definitely make it sound amazing(especially with someone like Woolford mixing it), I just think it wouldnt be worth it. I do however think they need to have someone else mix their next thing for sure. It will put them in the league they need/deserve to be in. They should also have someone master it professionally too.

I do however think they need to have someone else mix their next thing for sure. It will put them in the league they need/deserve to be in. They should also have someone master it professionally too.
I'm pretty sure it's just a money issue, but I could be wrong.

oh sweet. i like that track a lot too. i would say that track and funeral for the martyr were lyrically the most personal for me to write because they didnt involve ex-gf/relationship stuff.
But really those three bands plus a little hint of Jimmy Eat World and The Juliana Theory and you have EXACTLY what i(cant speak for the other band members) was going for and was heavily influenced by.
Thank you for making me so much more excited.

interesting. i would say that this is one of the 3 most "straight forward" style songs on our album.
But it's something we are definitely proud of and are actually just thankful for anyone who takes the time to listen at least once.
i love this song, but people are seriously going to need to hear the whole record to "get it". i only recently got song titles, so i'm still going by track numbers, but songs 4 & 7 are two of the best pop-rock tunes i've heard in years. track 2 is really different in an AWESOME way. i'm distracted by drunk people right now or i'd go more in-depth, but seriously as soon as people hear track 4 and/or 7, they'll be floored just like i've been for months.
I really like it. Nathan sounds awesome too. When's the album coming out?
i like you. you're neat.
Sounds good. Nathan sounds really good.
so are you. you're neat, too.
I like it. I tried to tell Nathan to get his new record(s) professionally mixed but he wasn't having anything of it. Really enjoy the song and his part in the bridge.
we would, but at the end of this month we'll have maybe a little over 2 grand in our band account. correcting me if i'm wrong evan or ryan, but i'm pretty sure it cost them several thousand more than that to do what they did, and as much as we'd love to, we simply can't afford that, ya know? none of us personally have deep enough pockets, and unless we catch another lucky break, we don't won't have enough to get a record professionally recorded or mixed or mastered AND be able to afford getting a van so we can tour, which is what we're aiming for right now, ya know?
plus, you'll be pleased to hear (soon, i hope?) that ashton's mixing and mastering capabilities have vastly improved since the last record. some of our new demos in their demo form sound better than the final versions of the last record, sonically.
i hope you'll also be pleased to know, if i didn't tell you, that we're going to start recording 2 new songs that won't be on the 2 new full-lengths for a 7" release here in the next 2-3 months :-) soon after those songs are recorded, we'll start doing final takes for the record. we have to complete 2 demos (one of which is "Bones) and get started on the demo of our big, epic album closer song, and then we'll be done demoing. we have 19 demos right now. it's kinda crazy haha
This song is different from the rest of the record. The record, to me, has a TGUK meets some Starting Line with some Moneen-ish elements thrown in.
my vibe from it has been Armor For Sleep (vocally) meets Spitalfield & JEW, musically, with some nice Midtown groove to it with the frequent soloing.
Fucking awesome song, been diggin it for weeks. Cannot wait to hear the rest of the album.
PS, get Jamie onboard mixing The Injured List. It could be a total home run.
fund us, baby :-) haha
Mike I agree with you, and "Crazy" is actually my favorite track on the album. I think getting it mixed professionally would really put it over the top. I'll have to ask him why he's so against it.
most if the issue's money. it also doesn't help that 3 of us go to college full-time and the other 2 have full-time jobs, plus James, whose done a lot more of the writing for the guitars this time around than he did with the last record, is going to school in New Zealand starting in February, so we have to get it all completely recorded by February. that's 22 songs for 2 full-lengths, plus 2 other tracks for a 7". with our schedules & limited funds, not to mention our somewhat inconvenient location, i just don't think it'd be possible for us to work out all the details & monetary issues within our timeline, ya know? :-(

if we can afford professional mixing/mastering this time around, we'll consider it, but 2 grand isn't going to get us very far these days, plus we need some of that 2 grand for other expenses, ya know? we've only sold a little over 200 CD copies so far, so unless we sell another 500-700 of them in the next few months, money is going to continue to be a problem.
I'm pretty sure it's just a money issue, but I could be wrong.

haha that's sort of the other problem. we're recording 2 albums worth of material. 22 songs are album-ready, after cutting 10 others. we're doing 2 records, a big reason for that being our lead guitarist, who played such a big part in the writing process this time around, will be in New Zealand starting in February.

yup, 2 records, and any plans to remix or remaster the debut went out the window when ashton's hard drive crached. we lost all the tracks to every song except maybe one or two? i think we still have "Wait", and maybe one other, other than that, we don't have the tracks anymore, thus making any alterations to them impossible. trust me, we've wanted to make changes to several songs, but it's a no go. :-(

we still have it. i guess technically the problem is that an actual part inside of the hard-drive itself broke off & is apparently damn near impossible to replace or repair, or at least that's what we've been told by several folks who know their computer stuff. we could probably make it happen for a few hundred dollars, but at this point, i don't think any of us are willing to bother. those songs are pretty aged by now. half of the record are songs i've been playing live for almost 3 years now; several songs are upwards of 4-5 years old. we, and mostly me, are ready to move on to new songs, new material, just to move forward, you know? i'm so much more confident and in love with the new material we've been working on than i ever have been for the majority of the songs on that record. we've talked about re-recording a couple of them (do a really bluesy version of "Fall Apart"; do our org-core version of "Come Back Home", or do our double-timed version of "Wait" that doesn't have piano in it), but we'd probably only do it out of boredom if we didn't have anything else to record, but since we've got all this other material to work on, our hands are pretty full, i guess. :-(

Thanks?
I sent the song to GPress on July 3rd. It went up for voting in the staff forum with like 10 or 15 other bands in a thread, and no one seemed to even know it was there. I was supposed to hear back about it and never did. I know Anton found it, and said he had already voted for the song and didn't even realize it was us (or something like that). As I said before it seems like staff is more interested in featuring other styles of music judging by what has gone up as unsigned showcases lately, and that is fine. But we have money to recoup, so waiting to get this song featured couldn't go on any longer, so here it is.
I remember hearing Anton talk about you guys in said poll before I even knew who you guys were (your band name). I heard a few things from other staffers (forget who), but once I actually found out who it was in the band, I was like "Duh!" Anyway, I remember a few of us said "yay" to you, so after that... no idea.
Sometime this weekend, I can post a song on your profile. I'll have you send me the album or song or whatever and I can do it. I'm pretty slammed with work until Monday, so if you can't wait for me, just PM or email it to me (chris.fallon@absolutepunk.net). it's something we might consider in the future. if we did anything, it might be a re-working of the song with it either being more piano-driven, like the original version, or with the sythesized organ parts & slightly less dancy beats like how we play it live. i guess we'll have to see what happens, but i appreciate how much you enjoy the song & support us, man, it means a lot.

I hope I don't come across as overbearing about it, because the debut is very, very good for self-recorded and self-mixed. I don't doubt that Ashton's better and I'll probably be blown away by the next release at the mixing and whatnot. I just think/thought it'd be a great move for you guys to mix the next record and like Evan's band member said (is that Ryan?), a set of ears outside of the band, and coming in fresh, never hurts. Different viewpoint than the artists themselves, you know? If I were in the band, that'd be something I'd be interested in -- getting it professionally mixed. Augustine's cost much more than a grand because of the actual recording + mixing/mastering. To get it just straight-up mixed, it'd probably be way less. And I'm not saying it has to be Jamie Woolford. Who mixed the Your Best Friend record? I know they recorded in Chicago and for all that they have going on in there songs, I think they controlled the chaos sonically very well. Back-up vocals on a couple songs could be a bit more prominent, but that's just because I've seen them live and like the duel/tri-vocals they have going on with each one singing different lines.
I mean, I'm not trying to tell you how to run your band or anything, just stating my opinion. Not short on opinions, definitely.

way to bring me into this. haha.
ya, well realistically the issue is having a 22 song release. That's going to be expensive mixing/mastering wise. What I would do is cut it down to 10-12 songs(have those mixed/mastered "professionally") then release the others(mixed/mastered by Ashton) for free as either b-side EPs or better yet promos for the album. like release one every friday driving people to your website and building a fan base. Then after 10-12 weeks of that BAM release the fully done album. Hell you can even make it a double CD for the physical copy and just the "professional" one for the digital copy. Whatever floats your boat. But that's what I would do if i had a label and a band with that many songs. Nathan you can sign to my label. I have no money and no distro, just great ideas like that. haha.
it is Ryan by the way :-)

not sure if it's the label you're looking at / want but S-Curve records have literally no bands on their label..[It's the label We The Kings are on] and the people who work at the label are pretty cool people. Submitting your work to them could help a bit. I mean they signed Care Bears On Fire (http://www.myspace.com/carebearsonfire) so i'm thinking you got a really good shot. Submitting a song or two to them wouldn't hurt. If you don't like the label it's cool, just thought it may help.

It does. Vocals in certain songs give off big TGUK vibes to me. I feel like the second track has some nice TGUK feel to the vocals, off the top of my head.

woah this is fucking awesome.. let me know when i can buy your album, i will totally give this a shitload of last.fm spins
I like it.
Fuck yeah. Really liking it.
Yeah, those are two of my favorites on the record.
Love the track. If you guys play nearby I'll fight any other plans or whatnot to make it for sure. It'd be cool to play a show with you guys too, but we're really just not on the same level. You're where I wish my band was.
I really like it. Nathan sounds awesome too. When's the album coming out?
Sounds good. Nathan sounds really good.
Maybe if your band wasn't poocrap then I would care. Even just a little bit.
If it is, that's awesome.
I like the song, but like someone else mentioned this song has a very similar sound to a lot of stuff already released. Maybe as an album it will be better, but just listening to the single it doesn't stand out. I will definitely check out the album as a whole though as I am still a sucker for generic pop punk.
Fucking awesome song, been diggin it for weeks. Cannot wait to hear the rest of the album.
PS, get Jamie onboard mixing The Injured List. It could be a total home run.
I don't really deal with much else besides reviews haha
can i tell you how much i love you? haha i saw your sad thread with my lyrics from "Crazy" as the title, and now i see your user title, and that sort of thing just makes me really happy & i thought you should know that. so thank you.
I'm enjoying this song a lot. The chorus really stands out to me. Great job guys, look forward to hearing the album.

Alright. So we are going to be doing this thing that we post a new song every weekend, JUST for the weekend until the album is released. It will be up Friday-Sunday and then taken down. We will obviously make another thread for this, but I just wanted to give you guys the heads up. Since bigmike has heard the album in it's entire glory, he gets first pick on the next song we place up this weekend(Goes up on 09/11/09). Thread will go up Friday morning either by myself or Evan.
here is where the songs will be posted(mostly because of better sound quality): imeem.com/augustinerock
and yes. I just quoted ALL of you. Don't make me go through this (http://absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=902032) thread too.

i wish. sadly we are all broke right now. we might do some short tours and such. i think our #1 goal is building a fanbase in Phoenix now. Also we are planning some pretty sweet pre-order stuff.

When is that?
If I would, I could. I would love to get there and Pittsburgh for a show or two. The issue is breaking our bank accounts(cause it would be out of our own pockets, not the band fund). Also equipment would be an issue. I don't mind sharing with someone cause my set up is cake(i would just bring my bass), it's everyone elses that is the issue. Especially drums. Maybe we could do an acoustic set? I don't know. it would be awesome though.

hey thanks! We are super happy with how the album came out with too. Just so you know the album has more of a variety of songs in which we will be playing the upcoming weeks or so. I'm not really sure onwhat your music tastes are, but we all came from different music backgrounds, so it shows throughout the whole album. So hopefully you get the chance to hear the whole thing(we should be putting it up in about a month or so).
