View Full Version : 2006 Stanley Cup Champions

Who will it be this year? Playoffs start friday.
Detroit? Stanley Cup and NBA Champ in the same year? Wonder if thats been done before.
Anyway, I was interested if everyone is still going with Detroit. I love how San Jose and New Jersey are playing coming into the playoffs so I'd go with one of them, if I had to pick other than Detroit.
In brackets are the odds that vegas has them at this year as of April first. Funny thing is that as of april first the washington capitals have the odds of 2000/1 while pittsburgh and st. louis have none. hah.

I'm going with detroit because I'm biased. and also the fact that I believe they're 1st offensively, and 3rd defensively. (don't quote me, those might not be exact, but they are tpo 5 in both.)

There's a huge difference between Lundqvist and Weekes.
I think it will go at least six, probably seven. Still not sure who will take it.
I voted for Detroit to take it all.

Here's the current lines from VIP Sports...
OTTAWA 15/4
DETROIT 15/4
CAROLINA 7/1
DALLAS 15/2
NEW JERSEY 11/1
CALGARY 9/1
BUFFALO 14/1
PHILADELPHIA 15/1
SAN JOSE 16/1
NASHVILLE 30/1
NEW YORK 25/1
ANAHEIM 35/1
COLORADO 35/1
TAMPA BAY 15/1
MONTREAL 40/1
EDMONTON 50/1
Unless Calgary and Detroit both get knocked out before the finals, the East has no chance at winning the Cup.
I say Calgary takes it all.

No kidding Marty's better. And yes, I'd say an over half a goal difference in GAA is pretty big.
If you want to hold someone accountable for last night, look at the Rangers defense. Ottawa was constantly on breakouts, and getting half rink passes through them. It was awful.

Ottawa will not beat either of those teams(Detroit or Calgary) with Emery as their goalie. I just don't think he's good enough.
New Jersey is on a great run right now, I'll give them that. But they really aren't that talented of a team. I think they are eventually gonna run into a team that can exploit the fact that the defense really isn't that great.
Also, I highly respect Brodeur, but I would easily take Kiprusoff over him this year. So if they face the Flames, I think the goalie advantage is nullified.

04/19/06, 07:03 PM
its either going to be ottawa or the devils. the devils have the ultimate playoff goalie and are on one heck of a roll and ottawa's offense is so potent that even if their goalie lets up 3 or 4 they have the ability to score 5 or 6 easily. As soon as heatley went to ottawa I said that the sens got the deal of a lifetime and look what a line it turned out to be.

Marty and the Devils didn't stopped us the only 3 times they've played us in the playoffs, even when the Devils were supposed to kill us. Funny we're 3 for 3 against the Devs in the playoffs. So why should we automatically be counted out? Because you're on a hot streak? And because we lost 6 in a row with our backup goalie and without our star phenom rookie goalie, that means we have no chance?

Definitely a better team this time around. The one thing I'm glad no Devils fan has mentioned yet is home ice advantage because let's face it - there's no ice home advantage in this series, especially not for the Devils. Devils fans never fill up Continental. I wouldn't be surprised to see more Rangers fans there then Devils fans, haha.
I can't decide who to vote for. My biase leads me towards the Rangers, but I'm gonna be honest and realize that's probably not going to happen. I don't see Ottawa getting too far. Scary to say it but the Devils could go far, if they beat the Rangers. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say whoever wins the Dallas/Colorado series has a good chance of winning the Cup, especially Colorado (a pretty good playoff team).
EDIT: Colorado and Dallas do face off in Round 1, right? haha.

The Olympics is actually part of what killed us. Jagr got nailed with a huge check during one of the games and left early with a soar groin..then Lundqvist played all those games, he had to be beat. Not to mention 9 of our best players went for the Czechs/Fins/Swedes combined in the Olympics, and Prucha was out with injury. We've been plagued by horrible injuries.

i agree about the bias ...i'm unfortunately a B's fan so i've of course had lots of practice of judging the NHL playoffs from a neutral position. The Red Wings are a pretty big favorite for a reason. 120+ points is nothing to sneeze at.

Are they the best team in the NHL? Yes. But..they played 24 games against the Blues, Blackhawks, and Blue Jackets. Not exactly rocket science to beat those teams. But, even besides the fact that they beat those bad teams..they have the best defense in the NHL. I wouldn't wanna face them.
Speaking of the Blues, they won the Lottery and they got the first pick in the NHL draft.

I'm not trying to start a war but lets say the wings were in the northwest division i strongly believe they would not have won the west. Even if you don't count all of their games against their division, the Wings' winning percentage is still better than any other team in the NHL.

They were 13-5-2 against the Northwest. That's still pretty damn good. They were 14-5-1 against the Pacific. That means they were 27-10-3 against the rest of the Western Conference. The weak competition stat doesnt work too well when you consider a team such as Calgary barely cracked .500 against the Central. Not to mention Chicago and St. Louis had a better record against the Northwest division than the Central ...thats because of the Red Wings.
I think Dallas could give the Wings a run for their money out West, but that's about it. The vote totals for a club like San Jose are only that high because they have fans on this board.

I have no idea why you would even bring up my team at all when you say I'm going to stop getting into arguments, you just started another one.
I simply brought up those facts because I just wanted to point out that they wouldn't get 44/48 points against 3 other teams in any division in this league and don't tell me they could.
Lets see if the Wings can win the cup since they are suppose to be the best team in the league due to the fact they won the presidents trophy, we'll measure them based on there playoffs this year.

Buffalo's the only remaining team that got over 1.79% of the votes. Edmonton, Anaheim and Carolina all got 1.79. Kinda interesting how the new salary cap has made the lower ranked teams have a better chance of advancing in the playoffs than they would have in the passed when the more popular teams seemed to be alot more stacked with the high ranking players.
