i can understand how you feel since i, on the whole, feel the exact same way. i mean, i guess you can both stick to your ideals/values AND make a decent living doing so. but if you think about, gabe put a solid 5 or 6 years into midtown - essentially giving it everything he had for almost nothing to show for it (while bands were forming after midtown had put out 2 full lengths and put in a fraction of the hard work they did). and these were the bands seeing far more success than midtown even after appearances on late night tv and mtv reality shows. i'd be extremely put off and looking for something new if i put my absolute all into doing what was right while draining me of my financial stability and whatnot for so long.
Yeah. I guess I just always figured that someone like him wouldn't be looking to cash in/make such a drastic change. I just have a hard time ever getting that feeling when the thing I've always thought the best thing in the world would be to play in a band and make enough money for bills + food/expenses.

We're hooking it up to our TV. I'd much rather watch a movie at home on my couch than in the theaters with a bunch of noisy people.

bills and expenses for how long though?
Obviously I'd be naive to say "forever," but because I'm not in that situation at the moment, I don't have an answer for this. However, I'd like to think that paying bills/expenses and getting to play music with friends would be enough for me given I have no desires of owning a house on my own or anything of that sort. But, like i said, that's impossible for me to answer without being in the situation.

Don't get Borderlands, COD is the way to go. Borderlands sounds like Fall Out 3 (which is a lot better in my opinion). Lots of games coming out this winter and next spring, God of War, COD, and Gran Turismo are on the top of my list.
There's a FIFA '09 tournament here tomorrow night to win a copy of '10. I might have to go grab that. ha
Who's your favorite team to play with? I always go with Chelsea.

SI and Espn have them finishing either 14th or 15th in the East. So I guess any progress is good haha.

I haven't even looked at any predictions yet, but that seems about right. I am just excited to see Brandon Jennings play haha he is probably the most exciting player the Bucks have had since Ray Allen.

Paranormal Activity was pretty good...i cant say i like how it ended really but it was pretty entertaining
Ending was predictable, but it was an entertaining movie. It's not going to win any awards, but I thought it was okay.

oh there is, Paramount gave it a different ending for some reason. Initially at festivals and stuff it had a different ending, and that's what is on the DVD screener.
I should check that out. End I saw was kind of cheesy.

Sounds like what happened with The Descent...where the US ending was absolute garbage but the original ending was much more ambiguous and cool.

I keep forgetting about Sherlock Holmes, but yeah I'll def see that too. It'd be in my top 5 most anticipated for the rest of the year, with the fifth being Brothers.
So my apartment building's fire alarm went off at 4:30 am. That was thrilling.

i thought the ending kinda ruined the movie for me. the rest of the movie had some sort of "real" feeling even though you knew it wasn't. it was really the first time the demon directly acknowledged the camera. i read the original ending had katie sitting on the floor soaked in blood for 2 days straight until her friend comes by and finds micah's body downstairs and runs out of the house. then katie gets up with no recollection of the past night and goes downstairs, knife still in hand, and cops open fire. another ending had katie slitting her throat in front of the camera but not looking into it.
when micah was cooking in the beginning of the movie, he starts playing with the knife. kinda added a little bit of foreshadowing.

yea definitely, i felt the same way about the ending. i think out of those 3 endings though, i would have preferred the 3rd one. and i kind of thought the knife thing in the beginning would play osme part but i wasnt too sure. is that how she killed him though? mustve been a good stabbing because there didnt seem to be a struggle/him screaming from downstairs
also i kind of have a weird crush on the actress in that movie haha she was pretty cute

i ended up seeing it twice haha. once at garden state plaza a week before the wide release and then after. if you looked closely enough, she's holding a knife when she stands over his body. the angle that she's holding it is pretty much lined up directly with the camera so it's a little hard to see.

Haha well yeah. I was more asking if there are even many possibilities with this degree. I'll also have (hopefully at least) my teaching certificate k-12 in social studies, so I'll always have that to fall back on.

That's what my dad did. I can't remember if it was before or after he went to grad school, but he had a PS degree and then just went ad taught history for a little while inbetween whatever he was doing at the time. Seems like a cool gig if you're teaching something you like.
On another note, my throat feels like it's being pummelled by a thousand tiny Ivan Dragos with barbed wire gloves every time I eat or drink.
i have pinched nerves in my neck, shoulder and back currently and am doing online traffic school. living in hell on earth right now.

i can't understand why people pursue/receive degrees in a specific field when they don't know what opportunities there are or where it can take them. i know finding work/getting a job has been tough and will be for a while, but it just makes me scratch my head when people don't know what they get themselves into.
Well in my case it's because my "ultimate" goal is to do something in education for the state, because the education system in WA is pretty messed up now.. but who knows how that will go. And there's nothing else that interests me as much as poli sci.

i can't understand why people pursue/receive degrees in a specific field when they don't know what opportunities there are or where it can take them. i know finding work/getting a job has been tough and will be for a while, but it just makes me scratch my head when people don't know what they get themselves into.
Picking a major based on perceived available job openings in 4 years is a terrible, terrible route to take.

oh i know this -- a liberal arts degree from a four year institution goes quite far in the job market. of course someone shouldn't jump into a major because of perceived job openings. i'm just saying i don't understand what people are thinking when they're in a degree program and all of a sudden are going "well, fuck...what am i gonna do with this?" with no future planning or set goals.

Yeah...I knew I wanted to do film work and video editing...so thats one case where you have a specific major for the job...but my major is communications so I could also use that to get a variety of other jobs.
But yeah, unless you have a specific job in mind, go with what interests you

With the talk about careers, and since this is the sports forum, how many people here are actually pursuing a job in sports?
I am pursuing a job in sports but I have not found anything out there. I'm looking for anything at this point to keep me afloat and so I can move out but I ultimately want to have a career in sports. I'm currently applying for grad school to get a masters in Sports Management. The program offers a lot of internships with the professional teams in Southern California so I hope that is an in for me.

Prefer MLB but am willing to do NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS. I am not willing to relocate though unless its a really good opportunity.

i feel like its a movie you have to see in a theatre with a bunch of people to get the real effect. i havent seen it so i have no room to judge but thats how i feel with most scary movies.

Oh wow, I didn't know that's what you had your degree in. I would really like to do something political, but who knows. What are you doing for work now? How hard is it to find work?
i work in an hvac sales firm, it was the job i had in college and they offered me a position. i only stuck it out to pay off some bills but now it looks like i can be on the road and make my own schedule (aka play golf or go to guitar center when i want) and make good money.
chances are you're going to stumble into something like that, unless you really make an effort to get involved in either a political campaign, interest group, or an elected official's office. getting a job is all about networking so the best thing you can really do is get involved in anything.
personally i hated the political world so i didn't go for it. studying politics and what people do with power, however, was awesome and i'd go back to grad school to do it again if i had $$ to burn.
Haha well yeah. I was more asking if there are even many possibilities with this degree. I'll also have (hopefully at least) my teaching certificate k-12 in social studies, so I'll always have that to fall back on.
if you want a job in politics you can get one, you just have to work pretty hard at networking and you better be ready to make it a career. you'll start at the very bottom and its tough work where you constantly get shit on...but, it is fast paced and things are constantly changing. it can be an exciting profession.
your best bet is to check out some internships at a statehouse or town government, or even just talk to people there. also talk to your professors. but i'm warning you, don't do this if you just want to get a 'job'. it's going to kill you.
i can't understand why people pursue/receive degrees in a specific field when they don't know what opportunities there are or where it can take them. i know finding work/getting a job has been tough and will be for a while, but it just makes me scratch my head when people don't know what they get themselves into.
because a liberal education isn't always meant to train you in a specific field. some people go to school to, you know, learn. and usually you end up with a degree that allows you to continue learning or advance toward a career.
obviously in my case i was headed to grad school had i not found something that made me money.

The well made horror movies don't require that...I really liked the Descent and found it suspenseful even on my 2nd time though while watching it on my home computer. I can say the same for a few other horror films...I just think most horror films are way too predictable now-a-days. If you listen to the music, you can tell exactly when something "bad" is gonna happen, and it takes away any chance of them being scary.
Of course, I'm not a fan of the genre and you couldn't pay me to go watch most horror films in theatres...so it takes something special to get me to go

for a while i was seriously thinking about doing the USF program. i live in sf so it would basically be an 18-month program i do to supplement my work. I would have done it not necessarily to break into the pros, but I would love to be an AD or work behind the scenes at my high school or local colleges (St.Mary's, USF, SFSU, Santa Clara, etc).
gave that up though when i realized i wanted to have a steady income while i'm young. like scott said, i'm not sure i can afford the risk of doing grunt work for 5-7 years.
Did they just change facebook again?

This is EXACTLY what everyone complained about when they made it status updates only. All they did was add it back.

I didn't have facebook before that last big change so it's pretty weird for me. So News Feed is going to be full of stuff that your friends and stuff are commenting on/looking at?

Here's the thing...you move those 6 highlight items from that right side into the news feed, you move me from a page where I don't have to scroll to get all that info to one where I have to scroll down the whole page to get it, cause the space a photo/video takes up in the news feed is big. We're redesigning out site at work, and that's a HUGE part of the discussion...getting as much of the important info on the page without needing to scoll as possible.
Its a minor complaint...like I said, more inconvenient than anything...but in terms of page design, its a step backwards. Facebook already looks like a 5th grader designed it, this emphasizes it. But I'll adjust in a day or two and forget about it ultimately

This happens alot with engineering. People go into it for the jobs, but then realize they hate it halfway through their degree.

To get rid of the LIVE/NEWS feed thing goto your homepage and then to the the list on the top left hand side of the page. Once there, click on the "more" button. Click and drag the "Status Updates" thing all the way to the top th...en refresh your page. Your facebook should be back to the way it was before.

Anyone else watching the U2 concert on YouTube? Just went to the show when it was here but it's still awesome to watch.

i read an article recently where U2 is still in the red on this tour.
i guess their stage takes 2 full days to take apart.

I love how proactive Bono is about being worldly and helping people while this tour uses immense amounts of energy and fuel to put on, hurting the earth.

Yeah...its pretty insane:
The numbers are staggering: Three 90-foot-tall custom-built stages containing a 54-ton cylindrical video screen and 500 personnel are being hauled around the country by a fleet of 189 trucks and buses. In addition, the band is expected to pile up 70,000 miles jetting around the world by the time the two-year tour concludes in 2010.
And their response was literally ""It's probably unfair to single out rock 'n' roll. There's many other things that are in the same category". Apparently they are gonna use "proceeds" from the tour to purchase carbon offsets, but if they are in the red, no way is that gonna work out

To get rid of the LIVE/NEWS feed thing goto your homepage and then to the the list on the top left hand side of the page. Once there, click on the "more" button. Click and drag the "Status Updates" thing all the way to the top th...en refresh your page. Your facebook should be back to the way it was before.
Eh, kinda but not quite. Old still had pictures and wall to walls. This is just statuses.

God that's ridiculous. I can't believe they try to justify that tour at all. It's just something that can't be justified.
it blows my mind that U2 can be in the red on this tour considering their ticket prices and number of people that attend

the screen and stage they built is literally on par with Cowboys stadium in terms of scale...seeing as they had to raise the video board there just to fit their stage in that place. Add in the cost of 500+ crew and like 180 trucks and that alone is millions just to pull off one show

Roto is a category league. Where FT% and Turnovers matter - Howard will murder you in those categories. Do not take him first, under any circumstances. Don't even take him first round.
