And what do you mean...he perennially struggles in the early rounds and only twice has made it to the quarterfinals. Its kind of the running joke for analysts...someone always predicts him to the semis and he always loses in the 3rd round instead to some unranked guy

I don't find anything wrong with that. Sometimes he cries when he wins. He's just passionate and that showing us how much these tournaments mean to him.

*Pokes one of my old blogs*

When Fed started to cry after losing in the Australian Open to Rafa, I lost almost all respect for Fed. That was Nadal's moment and he completely and utterly made it all about himself. For someone who is supposed to be such a classy fellow, I thought this was incredibly disrespectful. It was not even so much the act of crying, but the manner he went about it. It is even worse when you think about how much we hear about the great friendship between Rafa and Fed. I mean, that was supposed to be one of Rafa's crowning moments and instead his victory speech ends up being an apology to Roger? C'mon now.

Same goes for his victory at Wimbledon and pulling out the jacket with the number 15 stitched on it. That was a classless thing to do right in front of your opponent after such an emotional game.

Trust me, I fully understand how passionate Fed is. I am a tennis player myself and tennis is hands down one of the most mentally and emotionally draining sports anyone can ever play. It is almost incomprehensible for even me to fathom what it must be like at that level of play. I simply think that for being dubbed such a classy guy, Fed has done quite a few unclassy things as of late.

mick2late
09/04/09, 01:59 PM
Oh, and let us not forget how reluctant Federer was to relinquish his Wimbledon crown to Rafa. I believe in his post-match commentary he blamed the darkness and complained juuuuust the slightest about how he felt the match should have been stopped?

I have been a fan since she beat Jankovic at Wimbledon. I truly believe she is the next face of American tennis and the heart she displays while playing is infectious. That is why I like her, personally.

What to you is so annoying? She comes across as very charming, I think, haha

She is only 19 but she has been around for a while. I think she turned pro in '05. Definitely not one to be taken lightly. She has the most total wins of any female on the tour this year and a lot of people have felt that it was just a matter of time before she made a splash at a Grand Slam.

I see, yeah maybe if I keep seeing her consistently do well then she'll probably grow on me. I'm not a fan of the Williams' sisters so a new face of US tennis is welcome. Yeah, her forehand has been all over the place and she has not been able to control any of these rallies. Wozniacki is keeping her really far back behind the baseline and what helped her beat all those Russians perviously was the fact that she was crowding the baseline. Problem is, Wozniacki isn't a power player like those other girls...Wozniacki plays a very similar style to Oudin, she just has more experience.

Woah, that is an extremely outrageous and uncalled for statement. She lost her temper during a key moment in an extremely stressful environment, something I don't think I have ever seen her do before. Are you telling me you have never lost your temper before?

I'm not saying her actions were acceptable, but calling her a piece of shit is out of line. Let us not forget all the things she has done to help others. She helped to create a school in Africa, has done a ton of work with young people at schools and community centers, has donated and been a big spokesperson for finding a cure to breast cancer, and is one of the main reasons why women in tennis now have equal prize money to men.

One mistake vs. A bunch of positives.

09/13/09, 11:46 AM
Well, Rafa has definitely been having in these later matches breaking his opponents serve. He is not going to beat del Potro if he cannot break him.

It is really crazy to watch this match. My two favorite tennis players going head to head. On one hand, Rafa is and will always be my favorite, and I would love for him to complete his career grand slam this year. However, I would love to see del Potro win his first major...Regardless of who wins, though, I'm sure Rafa will get his grand slam eventually and I think it is safe to say that there are many major titles looming in del Potro's future.

What's not to believe? He was playing on his worst surface against an extremely talented player who likes to hit high balls with great power. This is not a surprising defeat. So we have del Potro/Federer tomorrow night. Going to be extremely interesting. My inclination is to say Fed in 4 or 5 sets. I could easily see Fed winning in straight sets again, though. However, I can see del Potro pulling it out in 4 sets if he is on his A game. No way can he beat Fed in straight sets unless Federer does everything wrong. No way he can win in 5 sets either, I don't think. Fed is just too good, has the experience, and the fitness to win it in 5. Ugh, I really don't know. This match could go any which way.

mick2late
09/14/09, 07:45 AM
I really have no idea. This is really a tough one to call. It could go a lot of different ways. Fed has handed del Po easily in the past, but this is a different del Po...I'm not sure if that matters, though. Federer doesn't hit a high ball with as much spin as Rafa does, which JMDP loves and literally eats up, so that is a plus for Federer. His slicing backhand is particularly going to be useful as he keeps it so low to the ground. Also, Federer is capable of hitting out wide, something Rafa admitted he was unable to do because of the ab injury. Finally, Fed's serve will win him a lot of cheap points.

Seriously, though, Roger can swear at the head ump because he told Federer to be quiet but we all bring out the pitchforks because Serena swears at a line judge at a crucial point of a game on a horrible call. If we are going to rationalize these situations, let it be on a fair basis.

Sorry to beat the argument home, but I am so intrigued by the Serena situation alone. I truly believe 100% that we care so much about it and condemn her actions because we as a society are absolutely terrified of an angry, strong, black woman. I mean, look how we sensationalize them on television and turn them into the uber-bitch. It is just ridiculous. I should probably write a blog about this, haha.

McEnroe verbally abuses line judges and lands a $100 million endorsement deal with Nike. Serena does it and she is the worst person to walk on the face of the planet.

I don't think it's acceptable behavior for any tennis player, even Roger to be cursing at people on court but the situations are definitely different. He wasn't threatening the chair umpire at all.

Annnnnnnd del Potro basically hands Federer the set with those double faults after playing so well.

Trust me, I totally get it. I am a tennis player myself...I don't think I have ever yelled at a line judge on any situation, though. But people instantly bring up being a role model as to why Serena's tirade was so unacceptable. "What about the children?" It is just a bullshit double standard, in my opinion.

I mean, do you honestly believe if it had been almost any other player on the tour, mens or womens side, the announcers really would have been like, "Oh, the line judge told HIM to be quiet!? What nerve!"

This is what I get for being a Sports Management and Media major. We have been dissecting this stuff all day. I apologize, haha

I did laugh when they talked about the Umpire being in the wrong for telling him to be quiet.

It is only 9 10 here. But I didn't get to see the post match ceremony. I heard it was pretty classless on CBS' part and they pretty much rushed del Po off? That sucks.

when del po asked if he could say something in spanish, baldywhatshisface said that they didn't have enough time. he then proceeded to tell del po that he won a new lexus convertible and presented him with the keys, which i guess goes to show how important corporate sponsorship is. they did let him say something in spanish but they definitely could have been infinitely more tactful about it

It's not really relevant, but I wish I could read lips to understand what the lady in the orange top says to Serena she's walking off the court.

Federer has had a good year so glad he took it well. Nice to see Del Potro pull through. He is an amazing player. I was in new York last week and saw Nadal and Federer around our hotel getting into the official US Open Lexus cars. My heart skipped a bit. Felt too Dorky to ask for autographs. There were quite a few of the US Open cars and buses driving round the city, exciting to see as a tennis fan.

I know! For some shitty sitcom on afterwards. And they just kept emphasizing about the money. The guy talking to him was a COCK who clearly knew nothing about tennis. I admit I did start cracking when he began talking in Spanish. :-(
