I was thinking about this earlier and came up with the Yankees, Real Madrid, and Manchester United. Beyond that I don't know. I'm having a hard time coming up with any others.
Any sport will do. It doesn't have to be the greatest team, just which teams have the most fans/are most popular/are most known throughout the world.

i think notre dame football, duke basketball and the dallas cowboys have pretty good international awareness.
and in third world countries, the buffalo bills are one of the greatest teams ever.

Football teams are obviously the most widely known and popular sport teams on an international basis. Yes, the Yankees are extremely popular in America, parts of Europe, and Asia, but that cannot even compare to how incredibly popular football teams like ManU, Real Madrid, Chelsea, AC Milan, Barcelona, etc. are.

I would say the Yankees, yes, but more so the brand that is the Yankees. I'm sure people across the globe know the Yankees and can recognize a Yankee's hat when they see one, but do they actually know the players, the coaches, etc? That is not saying that no one that does not live in America knows, but generally speaking. Obviously the MLB has many key markets outside of the USA. Football really isn't that large of a market outside of the US, so I doubt many people know the Cowboys on an international scale. Especially in western nations.

I always figured the Yankees in baseball are equivalent to those teams (mainly ManU in my eyes) in football. I think if there's one team in the United States that people from the rest of the world know, it's the Yankees. But yeah, football's just the most popular sport.

Thank you, that one went over my head.
I think some New England teams are/becoming more prominent throughout the world. I think if you talk basketball in other countries most knowledgeable sports fans will know who the Celtics (and Lakers) are. The Red Sox are certainly gaining more international fame, especially in Japan and East Asia. I also think the Patriots are gaining international recognition. I remember a year or so ago reading about a Japanese Patriots fan club in Japan (or something). Obviously not on par with other names mentioned, but people are not totally clueless.
Liverpool would be another who rivals top English football teams.

I would say the Chicago Bulls, and ONLY because of Michael Jordan. Seriously, you can watch tons of videos of little Chinese kids in the middle of nowhere go apeshit over anything MJ-related. And my guess is they probably "love" the Bulls by association.

Right, I completely forgot the Bulls. MJ has to be one of the most known athletes in the world, forget about teams.

Actually the Lakers have the most prominent market among Asian fans. Kobe Bryant is a king in their eyes, even more so than Yao. It is really interesting.

I think in the global markets that baseball flourishes, the Yankees are definitely on that level with football teams like ManU. However, you could go anywhere in the world and the majority of people probably know ManU. I have a hard time believing that in a country where baseball is irrelevant, the majority of the population know who the Yankees are. That may be me just being ignorant, though.

Seriously? I thought Yao was like a freaking god over there. Granted, my opinion is horribly uneducated and subjective, but he's a 7+ foot tall B.F.G. in a country with an average height of under 5'8". How do they like an arrogant douche like Kobe more than him?
Aside from that, I was more just trying to say that you can go to a rural, or maybe just non-sports-exposed area, and they probably know MJ, and therefore know the Bulls. Apparently China was a poor example to use. I just remember reading a story from the ESPN Magazine a few years back about "MJ The Businessman", and I'm pretty sure he was in China, and they couldn't get enough of him.

Don't get me wrong, Yao is like a God over in China, but for whatever reason, the Chinese just think that Kobe is the best player to ever step foot on the court. His jersey outsells Yao's in China. We did a whole thing on global marketing in one of my sport management classes and we saw this video of Chinese fans and they were all ape shit for Kobe Bryant. It was kinda weird.

I've never left North America, so I don't know how sports are viewed in other parts of the world, so I might be just as ignorant as you. But you said before the Yankees are well-known as a brand, people can recognize the Yankee symbol. I'd think ManU are more recognizable as a team. It just depends what makes a team well-known, and it's really a bunch of things: the team, the players, the logo...

I am a Sports Management and Media major, so I like to think I have some insight, haha. I definitely agree with you on the brand vs. team aspect. People around the world can recognize the Yankees' logo (some nation's may still not even know what it is) but that doesn't mean they know who Derek Jeter is. The majority of people around the world hear ManU and they can equate that to Wayne Rooney, Sir Alex Ferguson, and even past players such as Beckham and Ronaldo.

Majoring in, but you haven't completed your degree...just kidding. But you don't know that if you went up to someone in England or Spain or France and they have the tiniest bit of knowledge of US sports that they couldn't identify Jeter. Jeter's arguably one of the most popular or the most popular player in the game today. Beckham and Ronaldo are household names, sure, but I wouldn't be so sure Rooney and Ferguson are...at least here. The only reason why I know of Rooney is because I was watching a World Cup match, he was all fired up and decided to make a nasty play. I was entertained by it and his name stuck with me. There's just tons of variables here.

Same thing with the Utah Jazz in the late 90s.
I think the most well known teams in the world are, in no particular order:
NY Yankees
Manchester U
LA Lakers (Kobe)
Chicago Bulls (Jordan)
Houston Rockets (Yao)
Real Madrid
Dallas Cowboys (less known)

I feel like whoever told you that might've made it up, because after you said that I asked a few of my friends from over there and they said they'd never heard of anyone having a problem with it. Who knows, though.
And I'd say Team USA Basketball would be right near the top, if that counts.
