bayless for me ..he's an idiot and he doesnt really seem to know much about sports. the guy is flat out delusional. woody paige, to me, brings even less substance than smith to discussions but he's much more tolerable. Either way, Bayless trumps them all.
Smith is knowledgable about basketball, but he is an idiot about everything else. I agree with the Woody Paige statement. I think Bayless, when he was a writer, and I read his columns, would make some sense, but for the most part is just an idiot. For me, Smith is the worst because he forces his opinions on others and just yells about race.

I realize that I said sports writer, but I'm also factoring in the tv shows.

Skip hands down...only because Stephen A Smith hasn't found a way to yell at me via writing yet...

I just totally avoid ESPN until five o'clock when ATH is on.
Max Kellerman was great on that show, it's a shame what happened to his brother.

Because I was wondering why he left the show..I don't like Stat Boy as much...

But yeah, i always have my TV on ESPN, but I don't really watch it for long periods very often

he left the show to sign with Fox sports. he got like 3 million dollars and had a show called I, Max. It was pretty much him and a guy from the Boston Globe. i feel like a goon because I can't remember his name. Maybe Micheal Smith? Anyway he's on ATH everyday, black guy, jovially, pretty funny. The show got cancelled mainly because Max Kellerman was, understandable, a mess when his brother died

Kellerman's brother was killed by a boxer as histrionics22 said, that was staying at Sam Kellerman's apartment in LA. There was a really good article about it in last weeks Sports Illustrated. It was one of those articles that reaffirms my belief in sports writing. Kellerman and his brother were really close and Max felt like he led his brother into boxing which eventually led to his brother's death.

Arrogent? Smith brings arrogence to a new level. Stephen A. Smith = the Bill O'Reilly of Sports. Except that Bill O'Reilly doesn't yell as much on his radio show, and Smith has absolutely nothing to do with my high school, unlike alleged Lax rapists and right wing pundits.

Max was helluva a lot better than Tony.
Wikipedia has a good run down of what happened to Max
The guy that was on his IMax show was, shit his name esacaped me to, he has braids, and had braces.
I use to love ATH more than PTI
But its the other way around now
I'm pretty sure it's Micheal Smith now. He is on ATH everyday and shaved the braids off and lost the braces. I'm pretty sure it is the same person atleast. Micheal Smith (who I'm pretty sure is who it is) is a good writer, unlike Bob Ryan. (I'm looking for a fight with the Boston fans)

i think I'm going to watch quite frankly today. I automatically change the channel/run when Smith is on tv. Perhaps he has learned something about sports othen than basketball.

Well he's had a book out I do believe and I'm guessing he's still writing for the Globe maybe.

Edit: He is currently co-host of the midday radio talk show "Dale & Holley" on WEEI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WEEI) in Boston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston), according to Wikipedia.

I listened to his radio show a lot over the summer, and I remember eing really excited that Rome Is Burning was going to be on TV, then after about 3 weeks of it, I hated him more each day.

He's not worse than Smith to me, because his hatred is rightfully placed occasionally (not often though) and he's actually decently intelligent.

i miss max. tony's good too, but when max was on ath it seemed like it was his show. now with tony it seems like it's the panelist show. i've always prefered pti though because kornheiser's a genius. by the way has anyone noticed woody paige says exactly word for word the same stuff on 1st and 10 and ath?
yeah, I enjoyed that aspect a lot more...the panelists now have way too much vested in their personalities and showing off (Woody paige started that of course) instead of crunching the stats for thier arguments.

Eliminating kicking would devestate the NFL, their is nothing better than a kicker missing a game-tying/winning field goal to lose it...I basically need a poster of the Wide Right kick from Norwood.

When Max had the show it was very unorganized and a bit of a free for all. Before kellerman left, it was about to be canceled, but ratings picked up. The after he left, they redid the show and imo if kellerman had stayed with the show and it still developed the way it did it would be better than PTI. PTI everyday is great television, and it rivals Sportscenter of the Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann era as the best thing ESPN has every had on.

Anyone every notice how on first and ten on cold pizza and on first and ten at 4:30, Paige and Bayless say the same exact things? I'm pretty sure it is scripted. </end attempting to make a horrible joke>

I consider Woody Paige to be a pretty ignorant writer. I believe he (and Bayless) is/are fed what to say and as i alluded to in my stupid joke, that the show is scripted. Paige just reads what is given to him for 1st and Ten, again for ATH.

damn, i was thinking about making a thread like this but i was gonna add some more people (stuart scott, sean salisbury, ). Woody Paige shouldn't even be on this list. That being said, I voted for steven a. smith. STOP YELLING AT EVERYBODY. The angry black man thing doesn't work when you are being paid hundreds of thousands to talk about sports. Plus he totally discounts anything other people say. Bayless is annoying, but he often takes sides that are against the norm which i like.

For anyone who reads NYC area newspapers: How shitty is the Post's sports section? It's embarrasing how they call it the best in New York.

He was in SI or Men's Health about being a guy on the rise

He has such great opinions on anything

My favorite quote from Max was when some interviewer asked him about boxing not being a popular sport anymore, and his rebutta was, if you are at an four way intersection and in one you have people playing football, another you have a baseball game, in the third you have basketball, and finally in the fourth you have two guys fighting, throwing punches, mostly everyone will want to watch the fight.

It was great.

Mushnick sucks but Vaccaro and Vescey are good. The Daily News sports section is decent except for when Lupica writes about the Yankees because for him when they win its expected and when they lose a game he hops up on his high horse. The Times sports section sucks. Everything is bland description with no opinion.

Just because his stock was on the rise doesn't mean the show wasn't about to be cancelled. PTI wasn't that big yet, so no one was watching. Personally, I have no idea why there was talk, from ESPN, of cancelling ATH, while they now have talk shows on now at 4 pm. Guess television has changed drasticaly since 2002.

Tucker Carlson having a show on Fox News is news to me. Does he still wear bow ties?
