There's a nice, official message regarding the writing and recording of new songs up on The Smashing Pumpkins (http://www.smashingpumpkins.com/)' website.

Meh, this probably won't be that great. But this probably means a reunion tour of sorts.

Hopefully they make an album that's as good as mellon collie and not that lame ass machina techno album they did.

D'arcy didnt really know how to play bass to begin with. Corgan played almost all of her stuff in the studio. And Billy And James have some sort of feud going on now. So while it would be nice to see all of them back together, most likely it'll be Billy Corgan, and Jimmy Chamberlain (hopefully)

Never going to happen, Mellon Collie is one of the single greatest albums in the last 15 years.

i dunno. wasn't jimmy in Zwan? why wouldnt they stick with that if just those 2 were in Zwan from the original pumpkins.
Reunited Pumpkins=Zwan 2?

Jimmy and Billy were always on good terms, and he already said hed be willing to play for a reunion tour/new album I believe,
D'arcy and James... not so much
Well shall see how it turns out.
machina was not techno... i'm sure going to enjoy this reunion!!!

A Perfect Circle is done, according to MJK.....Looks like Iha needs a day job.
overrated
false
i thought i remembered hearing that there would be no reunion without the original members. could be wrong though..
but there is no smashing pumpkins without james iha. anyone ever hear his solo album?? it's not bad. nor is machina which gets a pretty bad wrap.
the logo that's on the site is one of my favorite designs ever. from the inside of mellon collie's lyric booklet

I'm very excited about this. I obsessed over their music from around '96-'00. The Smashing Pumpkins were one of those bands that liked to do new things with every CD, so those looking for MCatIS part 2 will probably be let down.
And overrated?... Skill-less "acts" that top the TRL charts with their one-hit-wonders are overrated, bands like the Pumpkins deserve every accolade they get. Even if most of the credit should go to Billy Corgan (who's pretty much a God of music).

it took me a while to realize it, but james iha didn't do shit in the pumkins, billy played all of the solos, WHILE SINGING. let's see you do that, james 'lazer tag' iha. darcy sucked, melissa auf der maur was way better than her, and suuuuuuper nice (i met them all when i was in college). plus she was WAY better looking than darcy, no contest.

Had alot of techno aspects to it though. I'm actually in agreement with everyone that says they couldn't do another Mellon Collie, but I do wish they would return to the type of quality they did back in those days.

You're an idiot. Machina is not techno, it is also a great record. This however, is amazing news.

hope they come back grungey as fuck.
This thread should have nothing but glowing praise for Smashing Pumpkins.
They have to be the single most influential band of our time. Im a gigantic Pearl Jam fan and I still think that Smashing Pumpkins left a bigger influence on music than them or Nirvana did.

Machina: The Machines of God is one of the most underrated albums ever. Plus it was an overlooked concept album.

Machina II had better songs....I'd strangle a bobcat to get a hole of one of those vinyls

siamese dream is the greatest album of all time.
the real root of emo.
I liked Adore and Machina. I liked Zwan. I even didn't mind Corgan's solo album. Point is I think even Billy's less than critically praised stuff is still better than 90% of what the rest of the industry is putting out.
Id love to see them get as close to the classic Pumpkins lineup as possible even if it does mean throwing together some people who don't really get along that well anymore. It seems like sometimes the most dynamic results come from the fire fueled by conflict translated into music.
I may have left out a comma or two in there but forgive me THE SMASHING PUMPKINS are back fuckers and this makes my year.
Now bring on the Stone Temple Pilots reunion and ill get to see something new or the start of something new from some of the first bands I ever really got into as a kid. If this does happen along with new Tool and Pearl Jam albums around the corner, 2006 is gonna be a great year for 90's alternative rebirth.
