depends on what you play, your experience, the tone you want, etc...
if you want that signature thump and low end heard on millions upon millions of recordings, go with the pbass. its sturdy, good loking, and good sounding.
the jazz bass has single coils and is voiced a little brighter. with a good amp though, it can sound as deep as you want. the body may be a little more comfortable, because it is comfort contoured and offset. play them both, buy the one that feels best and sounds best TO YOU.

jazz bass. it plays better, and the sound is more to my liking. emphasis on the 'my' part, you're going to have to try both out.

exactly what he said, except swap the jazz with the p.
you just have to give them both a try. any positives somebody can point out about the one, somebody else can say the same about the other. it's all a personal thing.

I actually, had a similar question. I went with the Jazz Bass, it was more expensive though. But it was one of the best buys and I love the way it feels/looks/sounds.
What's your price range?

P bass. I've been using the same one for six years and still get kick-you-in-the-balls tone. That thing is a beast.

I like the jazz bass body better, but i like the sound of the pbass...so when it came down to it i got the Hoppus signature and i love that guitar.
But my baby is my mustang bass. If you haven't played one yet then play one cuz that thing is cherry.

i play bass in a grind band now and i use a p-bass. i can get it heavy with a bass amp and some guitar pedals.

I prefer jazz bass. It has more punchy sound. More emphasis on the harmonics rather than the fundamental.
But I'm not going to vote because I don't know what you want.
The jazz bass weighs more and has a very thin neck. I love it, but it makes it awkward if I play any other bass because I'm used to such a narrow neck.

i reccoment doing the following:
try out both, and make your decision based on the neck
the jazz neck has a thin nut width, but a very round neck.
where as the precision bass has a very flat neck.
the reason the neck should be your main decision in my opinion is it will affect how quick you pick up the technique if your switching from guitar to bass.
the pickups arent such a big issue, because on the jazz its really not that expensive to throw a P bass pickup where the J neck pickup is, likewise with the P bass, thats if you prefer the sound of 1 and the feel of the other.

this was enough for me. the jazz bass is definitely the one im getting when i get around to getting one. i like that thick, filling, smooth sound far more than the plucky clean one.

You might want to rethink your decision then. The j-bass has a brighter sound, the p-bass has a warmer, more low-end sound.

I've always used p-basses, they're good looking and play great.
It depends what kind of music your looking to play though.
