this forum must discuss:

1) my favorite guitarist
2) my favorite female artist (EDIT: this was before i heard Bjork.)
3) music of few or no words that communicates through expression and is truly a contemporary art form

oh and for those of you who only care about absolutepunk.net music genres... she's all up in dave grohl and mike einziger. so care about her.

she's all right but i prefer several other female singer songwriters to her. she played at a museum near me but the tickets were a bit expensive unfortunately, so i didn't make it.

She's very skilled and does some very interesting things on the guitar (slap-bass, fret-tapping, fanning). She's a technical marvel, and I was very high on her work a few years back, but in retrospect, it doesn't hold up. For me, there's a lot of prowess but no underline emotion and I find it hard to stay engaged when I listen to Everybody Loves You and Legs to Make Us Longer. ...Until We Felt Red was a decent change of pace, with more vocals and concentrated, linear songs. Last year's Dreaming of Revenge was probably her best work, but still left me a bit cold. I didn't even bother buying it after listening to the leak. Also, it's very easy to see John McEntire's influence on her work, especially in the album he produced (...Red). Her half-hearted "experimentation" owes much to him.

I want to like her, and there's elements of her work that I do, but she's lacking something.

I totally agree with the OP. I listened to her discography about three times today. I could listen to her music forever.

Meg showed me a couple of her videos a while ago, and I have to say these were my exact initial impressions, but maybe I just haven't given the music enough time. Who knows.

5 songs into the new record. instantly about 3 times more poppy than any of her other material. like "pull me out alive" but with more interesting riffs. the fact that it's more artistically focused and isn't just scatterbrained wankery does her a few favors and might give this album a leg up on Legs To Make Us Longer and Until We Felt Red, but the excessive repetition is really weird coming from her. i find myself getting bored of these riffs before the song's over, and that should just not happen with a guitarist this insanely talented. in addition, it honestly suffers from a bit of that uninspired feeling that you would expect when a non-pop artist writes a pop album, though it's not too overbearing.

my midway analysis is that this is solid, but unless the album changes a lot from here it's probably not going to come close to Dreaming of Revenge.

by the way, 2 songs later:

-I should have included originally that shes a much, much more confident singer and her voice actually sounds great, better than ever, but still sounds similar and isn't trying to sing outside of her natural voice.
-literally the next 3 songs after i made that post were a lot better and drew me right in.

HOLY SHIT this album has like, a punk song. awesome. i actually really like that coming from her.

EDIT SO I DONT HAVE FOUR FUCKING POSTS IN A ROW:
yeah, this album kicked it up a few notches after the first 4 songs. she pulled out her signature Ovation acoustic and played a few interesting chords, and it sounded a lot more inspired from there, and mostly stayed that way until the last song (kind of a bummer to close the album with the most boring song, but im not complaining too hard -- she said "fuck" 3 times with her cute little voice in it!). the riffs were great but don't expect to be impressed if you're well acquainted with her discography, this album's strictly about melody and songwriting. however, if i had known before listening that kaki king was making pop music now, this album would definitely have exceeded my expectations. there were a couple surprises too, most notably the sudden climaxes in a couple of the songs (can't remember which), and the fact that "death head" is actually pretty aggressive compared to the rest of her material. and the blatant profanity in the last song, that gave me a good laugh.

final verdict: it's not up to the quality of Dreaming of Revenge, nor is it a particularly mood-inspiring album like most of her discography, but it's a solid release and i'm not disappointed.

I didn't know she released something new. I'm reading some mixed reviews but I'll definitely purchase this if at all possible.

Confidence does absolute wonders for her voice. Really bottom heavy, but solid rock album. Some gems on here.

PS: Death Head was almost a Muse song. Ahahahaha.

yeahh listening over these first 4 songs again, i probably didn't feel much from them at first because i was still getting used to the massive change in sound. they're good the second time around now that i know what this album is about musically.

EDIT FROM AFTER SECOND LISTEN: this album is great. i do like it even better now knowing what to expect. "hallucinations from my poisonous german streets" is my favorite song on this record. fucking awesome explosions in the middle and end.

At the 9:30 club. Kaki comes on in about an hour, can't wait. She's supported by An Horse, a name I vaguely remember hearing, no idea what to expect.

Did she? I know that foo had a song featuring her on the last album, but I didn't know they dated. He's been married for most of the last decade.

dude, i disagree. i think Dreaming of Revenge is much more focused than that album.

if you're looking for "focused" though, her latest album Junior is without question the only really "focused" kaki king album.

Well, I was commenting on the first three, hence saying "the first three," but yeah, DoR is the most accessible and concentrated. I don't own it though, and haven't listened to it in about a year, so I don't discuss it. I didn't listen to Junior and haven't really had the compulsion to.

Dreaming of Revenge is her third album, i thought? before that it's Until We Felt Red, Legs To Make Us Longer, and then Everybody Loves You is an EP. unless you were talking first three releases and not first three albums.

Everybody Loves You has ten songs, is almost forty minutes long and, as far as I know, is an album.

Everybody Loves You is the debut album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Album) by American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) guitarist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitarist) Kaki King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaki_King), released in 2003 (see 2003 in music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_in_music)).

man Junior really finishes strong. the album closer isnt much more than cute lyrics (lol @ her actually putting "wiener dog" in a song), but the songs before it, "hallucinations" to "death head" to "sloan shore" is one hell of a trio. unfortunately those three are the only songs on the record i really enjoy as much as Dreaming of Revenge.

Could you please maybe help me locate her album from last year? I want to listen before I put it on my buy list.

i just think she's not very photogenic, none of her promos do her justice. she's actually really cute in person. fun facts: she can't be taller than 5'1" and she immediately comes across as the playful type.

i've really gotten into Junior recently. i think it's a great new side to her catalogue, and i think that may have been why i wasn't immediately getting it. Falling Day and the Betrayer are two of her best songs, IMO.
