View Full Version : Music Downloading Survey

One of our forum users, Kevin, is a student at CSU-Sacramento who's currently working on a Marketing Research project conerning music downloading. He's created s survey and was hoping some of you could fill it out-- survey (https://websurveyor.net/wsb.dll/35625/downloading1.htm). It's secure and anonymous, so there's not anything to worry about. It's not a "scientific" study by any means. Kevin just thought it would be fun to get an idea of what the AP.net's visitors think about downloading music, and at the same time do something productive for his class.

This survey, to me, seems flawed and biased.

It doesn't count income (ability to buy CDs - people with smaller income can't buy as many Cs), "less than 5 CDs" is still a lot of CDs so it can't tell you much (I think very few people buy more than 5 a month), a non-commercial download is not a sale loss, it doesn't state if "doing something wrong" is moral or legally (it's legally "wrong", but morally not necessarily), it doesn't go into the reasons for downloading, it doesn't state that people download to find new artists etc, it doesn't deal with legal non-commercial MP3 downloading in the least, it doesn't deal with AllOfMP3 (pseudo-legal and increasingly popular even though it doesn't support the artists, it doesn't go into the reasons for downloading in the least (it only mentions price), it doesn't mention things such as the reasons for downloading (copy protection, for example, stops people legally copying onto iPods while not stopping pirates), it doesn't deal with the reasons people might not want to download legally.

Far from scientific doesn't go into half of it. Pfst.

i was gonna say something like this. After taking the survey it looks like i download all my music and dont buy any. Because I dont usually by more than 5 CDs in a month, but for every 10 CDs i have i have probably downloaded 1.

Howdy.

Yup, I'm the one behind this crazy thing. First off, yes the survey is "flawed" and "biased" for a couple reasons:

1) This "study" isn't being published in some fancy journal or used as scientific evidence to put in front of a record label and say "Look at what the consumers think".

2) This survey is based around "convenience-sampling" therefore it wouldn't be truly scientific either way.

Sorry if you thought it would be a robust survey or something along those lines. It's kind of a "beginner" marketing research class and I don't have the extra time to create an exhaustive survey that covered all the bases.

Thanks to everybody who's already taken it.

Took it..I just took my marketing research class here at FSU..Are you doing it for a doctorate? We have alot of grad students doing surveys and such here all the time.

For those who were wanting results..i am not sure how in depth he is wanting to go..but usually market research starts with the survey then there is alot of statistical programs to run to get valid answers..so it might take awhile to see what he comes up with..

Looking forward to it.

In other words, "I didn't take the time to make a good survey". This ideal will get you far in life. you're really quick to pass judgement. the kid's obviously not looking to spend hours doing statiscal analyses. he probably thought the survey would be something cool to throw into what i assume is going to be his term paper. besides the sampling methodology makes even the best survey is pretty much useless. it's a pilot study at best.

As he said, even if he did make it a good survey and more detailed and addressed the confounding variables, the sampling method makes the survery flawed/inaccurate no matter what. Stop being an asshole.
