Hank Williams is the king of country music. Even if you don't like this genre of music, Hank was a gifted storyteller and passionate performer. I remember my grandfather playing Hank's songs in the living room. Some of the happiest moments in my life. I have within the past couple years have picked up some old records and have fallen in love and tried to emulate this style since. If you're a fan, show some love.

Good stuff, but although it's different musically I def prefer Guthrie. Hands down.

Why the comparison?

Becaue I was listening to Guthrie, and for some reason, I find them comparable, I'm not even sure why. I mean, both are digable though, so whatever.

I don't quite see the comparison myself either, but I do enjoy woody from time to time.
They are both gems of their time, for the most part lost in our generations.

They're not really that comparable.

I adore Guthrie and I enjoy Williams Sr. but I must confess, I've not listened to as much of Hank as I'd like to. I only own Moanin' the Blues, Ramblin' Man and Hank Williams as Luke the Drifter (which is a songwriting/storytelling clinic). I'm open to more suggestions.

Luke The Drifter and Sing Me A Blue song aren't have bad. I really like the ones you have the most though.

I spent the majority of the summer at my great uncle's house listening to The Complete Hank Williams [Box Set]. Ten discs and not a single bad song to be found.

Well worth the price if you can afford it.

I'm listening to the 40 Greatest Hits comp from the 70's and finding a lot to love. Did he have any actual proper albums that are still available, or am I looking exclusively at comps for him?

Pretty sure you're gonna have to overcome your comps phobia for this one, buddy.

Haha. That's about what I expected. 40 Greatest Hits works pretty well. I'll probably pick that up until someday I can grab the Complete Hank Williams.

I've heard some very depressing bands, (Cure, Joy division, Type O Negative) but Hank Sr. takes the cake.

There's something so elemental about his songwriting and his singing. Like it was just carved into the granite somewhere and got excavated, not written by some mortal man.

Been listening to him since I was a kid. The Complete Hank Williams is one of the best purchases I've ever made. No one else does sad songs better.
