You're saying "Wtf?!" in someone else's thread? This is a legitimate topic for music discussion. Maybe it's not as awesome as your "what not" song game thread, but honestly, what is?

Learning "We're Not Gonna Take It" on guitar has made me appreciate it so much more.
Rock operas tend to follow a theme, and have a general story contained in them.
A lot of rock operas also move in acts, similar to real operas or plays. Other than that, the idea whether something is a "rock opera" is up for plenty of speculation.

so i guess the question would be: rock opera = concept album?

Yeah, but there are also "metal operas", and other similar things. If it fits into the rock category rather easily, then yeah, it probably is.
Another great example: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars - David Bowie
Is there a specific album you're seeking clarification for?

not really. it was just taken from a conversation i had with a friend yesterday.
Oh, and there definitely doesn't have to be multiple vocalists for it to be a rock opera...

ok. but does it need multiple characters?
ok. but does it need multiple characters?
haha I really don't think rock operas actually have strict rules they followed to become rock operas. Most of the time there are multiple characters, but I could go and write one that all took place in my mind; no other characters. It could still fit the mold.

thanks for all the help.
Sure, hope you got some ideas out of this. I would definitely list Tommy as the first one to go to, though. In a single song, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Now you can impress your friend in conversation with all your KNOWLEDGE!!! hahaha

i think people will just call albums rock operas, we could try to make a definition but at the end of the day, anyone can call an album with any sort of theme/cohesion a rock opera.
edit: not saying it's not a good question, i just don't think anyone can pinpoint an answer

No on Yellow Submarine, it was a soundtrack to a movie based off of already existing songs, it was also named after one of the worst Beatles songs ever. The Wall on the other hand is.
