View Full Version : Albums with glitchy and cool 'layers'
SilverWings

This may sound like a weird thing to say, but one thing I love in music is when a band incorporates 'glitchy' or just background noise in a song, especially when it's transitioning to the next track.
e.g. on Relationship of Command, at the end of Enfilade you can very faintly make out some man's voice just before Rolodex Propoganda opens up. Or on OK Computer, the way Fitter Happier blends into Electioneering... amazing.
I know a lot of bands do this nowdays, but does anyone have any cool examples to share??

Aphex Twin - Richard D. Album James Album.

I was thinking of more subtle uses, not so much an album entirely composed of them haha. Although thanks for saying that, that album sounds cool as corn.

No problem. I'd suggest listening to it.

Umm, I'm not particularly sure what you're exactly looking for but the first thing that came to mind was Electric President.

I heard that they're a bunch of douche bags that poop on each other, à la FTSK, but perhaps I'm just getting rumors crossed.

The end of "Rite of Spring" by Angels & Airwaves
The end of" Play Crack the Sky" by Brand New
The end of "Reinventing the Wheel..." by Fall Out Boy
That's all I can think of right now.

The Early November- Ever So Sweet into Something That Produces Results, into A Mountain Range In My Living Room, into Sesame Smeshame. But, in essence, all of "The Room's Too Cold" by TEN does this. The first 5 tracks however, do it best.

For guitar-influenced music without diving straight into glitch...
The Receiving End of Sirens. Both albums.
Adebisi Shank - This Is An Album of the Band called Adebisi Shank
Battles - Mirrored
Showbread - Anorexia/Nervosa
Pure Reason Revolution - Amor Vincit Omnia
65daysofstatic - The Fall of Math
also between the heart and the synapse is easily one of the best releases of the decade.

sadurdays=youth is a great album, but I could easily see someone disappointed with it who's been a fan for a few albums before, the music took on a much more poppy bent that some fans resent. if all you've heard is saturdays=youth, you owe it to yourself to at least hear "before the dawn heals us." the track "car crash terror" is astoundingly good.

The end of "Ice Monster" transitioning into 'Knights" on Minus The Bear's Planet of Ice is the first thing that comments to mind. So awesome.

i have everything they've released (to my knowledge). I know that it is different than their early releases but I didn't see how it was disappointing, just different. it is poppier, that's why i liked it. i'm not going to say it's their best, but it's still good.

william doyle uses a bitcrusher on the acoustic guitar in "pretty pylons", that sounds pretty glitchy in the sense that you seem to be talking about. he also uses looping and delay a lot, especially in the songs "counterfeit moon" and "dry justice". go download his album born in the USB, it's completely saturated in background noise. you'll love it i promise.

Will you split the comission with me if i clink the link?
just kidding, i already have and enjoy williams work!
what was wrong with saturdays=youth?
i enjoyed it, but it just wasn't like his other stuff. and i'm glad he's not just re-hashing all his old albums, it was just too big of a leap out of his "normal" genre.
it was just too 80's. idk, i'm just not a fan of that style anyways, and when i heard m83 doing it, it just made me want digital shades volume 2 even more.

About equal for me. 65dos isn't great, neither was BTHATS, both good for there genre though.
