So I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled next week and I’m so scared! I have no idea what I’m going to do! I’ve heard so many horror stories about swelling, dry socket, infections, losing feeling in the mouth, broken jaws, stitches, bleeding…OH THE HORROR! BLOOD OMG! I don’t know how I’ll survive. I hate needles so much and I don’t know what I’m ever to do! I’m so scared and horrified and I’m such a baby. I hear about stories where people wake up in the middle of the surgery, or people get sick the following night cuz the anesthetic disagrees with their stomach. I have to get all four pulled out, and I am so nervous and scared and scared and scared…GOD I’m SCARED! Help me? Any advice or stories of your own? PLEASE TELL ME!

1. drop the font size
2. Make sure they get you good and drugged up. Also, the painkillers you get will be totally worth it.

Calm down or you'll have a heartattack before the removal. It's probably not as bad as everyone make it out to be, my mum had no problem with her and I don't think they used anaesthesia on her, just local. If you're all stressed and up-tight/tense it'll probably be worse.

It's not very bad. You get knocked out anyway, and get painkillers.
But be sure to keep the holes clean afterwords, getting an infection in those areas suck (the only plus side is more painkillers).

I still have to get some baby teeth pulled.
if it makes you feel better, when I was 8, they were going to pull some extra teeth, and they gave me so much laughing gas that I started throwing up all over the place and they had to take me to the hospital...the nice part was that my throw up consisted of only oatmeal, so it tasted exactly the same coming up as it did going down.

Avoid the dreaded dry socket by following the instructions given to you by HangsLikeHeaven. Aside from that, just stay calm. Don't psych yourself out over it. You're going to be fine.

09/09/09, 01:29 AM
I got this done recently, and was really scared of getting put to sleep. In all honesty, I had been postponing my appointments for years because it freaked me out. But then I got it done and it was nothing. They inject you, eventually you fall asleep and wake up and it's done and you're fine. Then you chill on the couch for a few days. It's important to follow the instructions they give you very closely, because dry socket is supposedly one of the most painful things in the world. I was actually worried I had dry socket, since I had intense pain on the 4th day after the surgery (they say it should be decreasing by that point). I went to the dentist and they told me it was fine, and after a few more days my teeth were fine.

Get a tattoo and you'll get over your fear of needles. Guess that doesn't make sense. I got my wisdom teeth out this summer and the dentist must have thought I was nervous or something cause he had me take Valium the night before (Blink-182 show!), the morning of, then gave me nitrous oxide all before giving me the IV needle. From my experience, getting your wisdom teeth out is one hell of a good time!

You should listen to Sam, he is very wise.
I had no problem with my wisdom teeth... I mean after the anesthic wore off and before I got my pain meds I had this brief episode where I was bleeding profusely from my mouth.. but I got that undercontrol! And I went out that weekend and drank and smoked .. not a lot but I still did. I got them out liek 2 and a half weeks ago and I'm fine. I mean your getting yoru wisdom teeth out, your gonna be okay.

Right, I can't be bothered readin what everyones said, but being a dental student who done an extraction today heres what I know. Its safer to only use local anaesthetic, less risks but you will be awake and it'll be more uncomfortable - not painful but you'll feel the dentist pulling the teeth out. Also they will probably have to do it over more than one visit.
It is possible for all the things you;ve mentioned t happen, but it's far more likely that it won't. You will bleed after it, but chances are not for long, they might stitch the socket up but again depends on how mich bleeding there is and how fast it clots. Chances are they will probably break the buccal bone (towards your cheek) but it will heal its self and isn't really anything to worry about.
The losing feeling in your mouth is a risk that happens if the nerve which runs through the lower part of your mouth runs inbetween the roots of the tooth and as a result could be damaged. However, the incidence rate of that happening is roughly 1:1000 of permanent damage. So its not very likely. This is only in the bottom teeth almost no risk is involved to the nerve in removig upper third molars.
Finally, as with any wound if you clean it as the dentist will tell you, you wont get an infection. Another note, the injections are almost painless on posterior teeth, its slightly sore on anterior teeth but well that doesn't really affect you.
So thats the truth about it all, don't worry about it.

Yes, they do in Glasgow anyway. Most people don't like to watch and it would be difficult to let you see if it's a tooth in the back of your mouth. It's hard enough or me to see most of the time. However, if it's in the front, they most likely wont have a problem with it. Though the dentist would probably try and talk you into staying awake (less risks) but out of watching it (more likelyhood the patient could faint). It can be a rather gruesome procedure.

So I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled next week and I’m so scared! I have no idea what I’m going to do! You will be fine :-) The worst was what happened to me..those assholes grew in on me. Talk about PAIN?!.. Getting them out before they grow in is the best advice I can give. It'll be shitty for a lil while because you have to have a liquid diet, and opening your mouth wide will take some exercise. But, you won't feel a thing.. As far as peoples stomachs hurting they prob ate or drink that night before or day of, and you're not supposed to. Don't be afraid, it'll be over before you know.

It's really not that bad at all. They'll give you a shot in the arm and 10 seconds later you'll be out like a light. It's just like blinking, it's way trippy how a few hours are instantly gone when you wake. Don't strain yourself when you wake up, you'll feel a little dizzy/weak. Just go home and take a nap right away. You'll get some delicious vicodin to take home, depending on your medical/the doctor decision (take 1 for pain, 2 for fun). If it's percocet, take with caution, as they are addictive, but they're way stronger. Other than that, you'll just be eating awesome stuff like mashed potatoes, oatmeal, ice cream, soup for a few days. Try not to stretch your mouth open too much or laugh for the 1st week, your jaw will hurt.
It sounds like a hassle, but your all better pretty damn quick, don't trip.

A.) Drop the font size and unnecessary CAPS LOCK. LOOK ISN'T THIS REALLY ANNOYING!?!?!? CAN'T YOU ALREADY READ WHAT I'VE BEEN WRITING?!?!?!? ok get it?
B.) Send me your painkillers because my doctor's suck and I have to spend $300 on a doctor's appt to get my refill.
P.S. wisdom teeth removal is nothing compared to back pain. I will have this my whole life you'll be better in what? A few weeks? Stop being a puss.

1. drop the font size
2. Make sure they get you good and drugged up. Also, the painkillers you get will be totally worth it.

If you allow them to choose, they'll give you a local anesthetic and crappy painkillers. Ask to be completely put out and for vicodin.
Everyone makes the same mistakes.

I stayed awake and it sounded like they were cracking nuts in my mouth. Creepy but i was fine except i'm allergic to the pills they gave me so i was nauseous the whole night.
Mine were easy. In and out of the surgeon's office and then I spent the rest of the day nicely zoned out on some good drugs. I was completely fine the next day.

Yeah, I should of gotten mine out in 2010 sometime but I didn't. My next dentist appointments in April. So I'll probably have to have them out by the summer. Only thing I worry about is infection. I've heard a really bad story once but that was rare and totally not something that would be common.
I love reposting my wisdom teeth reply:
I had my bottom two taken out, they were lying flat under the gum and each tooth had to be broken into 4 pieces. After hearing the surgeon crack the teeth inside my mouth, the strangest feeling was the tooth parts being taken out, I didn't feel any pain thanks to the anesthetic, but I could feel the bony parts sliding out of my jaw. I have since reassembled them with model glue and they're sitting in my bedside table :P
The most ridiculous/amusing part was the swelling. After 4 hours I thought I'd be fine, and them BAM massive cheeks and the most ferocious pain. I also ended up with some bruising on my cheeks, which made no sense to me, since the wound was on the inside of my mouth.
Just make sure you don't have a big social event coming up.
Oh - and DO remember to use the syringe to rinse out the gums once they start healing. I had the most rancid breath and taste in my mouth and had no idea why, but then I finally rinsed the area and dislodged a huge amount of old sutures/food particles, caught in the space where my teeth used to be.

i had a back tooth pulled in december. part of it broke off one day and then it got incredibly infected. i was up for four days straight the week before i had it taken out because the pain was so bad. in the course of one month i took about 250 tylenol to ease the pain. I wanted to avoid the dentist at all cost. (Ive had ~9 root canals so this isnt an unjustified fear)
my boyfriend finally drove me to the dentist and by this day i was unable to speak from pain. in the actual operating room i was in hysterics. the nurse and dentist had to hold my hands down to give me the medicine and i was sobbing like a two year old. i remember i took my ipod to listen to so it might calm me down. i chose to listen to Everything in Transit even thought i knew i wouldnt be able to hear it once the meds took action. after the doc put the needle in he asked me what i was listening to. I was already fading at this point but i looked at him with teary eyes and said "ITS ANDREW" and that's the last thing i remember. i woke up about 45 minutes later (still crying uncontrollably) but all of my pain was gone and it seriously was the best i had felt in over a month.
i woke up again a few hours later in my bed next to my bf and a carton of pudding i apparently ate but don't remember. it was great being taken care of for a few days and i realized that i had nothing to be worried about in the first place. i actually kind of liked it because the meds made me feel real happy.

I had my wisdom teeth taken out about 5 years ago. Worst part of it was that I woke up in the middle of the procedure..then when the docs realized, they gave me more meds and I passed back out. But when I woke up after they were done, I was so confused and out of it, I just started sobbing in my moms arms and kept saying "I woke up...I woke up during it!!". Tramatizing lol.

It's a symptom of it! It wears off in a few days though after you build a tolerance to it! I hope they give me the pills next time not the capsules because otherwise more posts like that one I didn't know I posted will occur...bahhh!!!!
