The Ataris (http://www.absolutepunk.net/theataris) have posted a new song on their MySpace page (http://myspace.com/theataris) titled "The Cheyenne Line". The song will appear on their Columbia Records (http://www.columbiarecords.com/) release, Welcome The Night.

i thought it was "welcome the night"...
What is this?!??!?!
It sounds good, but....Where's the pop-punk I know and love from this band?
Edit: Actually, I don't care, because this song is actually really good.

Holy shit! This is not the same Kris Roe of The Ataris I heard in high school. (For the record I graduated 3 years ago.) This is going to kill the mood of the live show.

Yeah, it really is totally different. But im not a big fan of it after the first listen.
Totally different sound! Crazy!

Yeah, it really is totally different. But im not a big fan of it after the first listen. I don't think this is one of those songs thats 'catchy' but.. more of a song you have to really listen to.

Why would they change the name of the band just because they are moving on from their old sound?

It sounds awesome but I really think Columbia is going to drop the band REAL fast because this isn't an album that 14 year olds will buy. I'm glad they have the balls (and talent) to do what they want though and not what the label probably wanted them to do. It's always sad when band members are replaced though, especially all but one guy, or whatever it is. But its always been Kris anyways so... i dunno haha I'll buy it anyways.

Why would they change the name of the band just because they are moving on from their old sound?
Well, i think they should change their name for a number of reasons. This isn't the ataris everyone grew up with. The "band" changed their music style. They went from pop punk to a killers rip off band. It's not a bad thing but they already established an "Ataris" image on peoples heads. Second the only original member in the band, that usually has the most say in direction of things, is Kris Roe. Not even Mike Davenport and Chris Knapp, the semi-original members (on most of the albums) are there. Different Band, Different Style, Different Direction. Should Kris change the name? Yes most definetly (how would people react if Tom kept playing under Blink 182 name without Travis and Mark?)

....This song isn't doing it for me at all. Not because I grew up faithful to The Ataris' old sond, but because I just don't think it's that great of a song.
Edit: I don't see the whole "Killers ripoff" thing either...maybe an AVA ripoff or something like that.

I do not like it at all. How can someone change their voice so drastically? It just doesn't make sense. It seriously does not sound like the Kris we all know. :( I want The Ataris back!!!!!

i really don't hear all that huge of a difference. i love this song. it sounds like kris, just more matured. kind of like how he's/they've progressed on every album. it sounds to me like this album will be the album kris has always had the potential to write. my favorite ataris songs were always their more serious, indie-tinged songs.
and the killers... are you deaf?
marbury1414
04/23/06, 05:05 PM
I like it. Alot.
it's a good song... i actually don't think it's a far enough departure from their 'old' sound. i was expecting more sigur ros - esque material, but this is sort of just indie-pop. the vocals do sound different, i see where people are getting the brandon flowers / robert smith comparisons.
maybe they didn't change the name out of contractual obligation?
regardless the song is pretty solid, but i very much hope that this is the 'single'.

Yeah, he has been saying in interviews that it will be much more mature and have an indie sound to it. I don't understand how anyone can hear The Killers in this. I think it souds really good. It will just take some getting used to.

I believe Kris did try to change the band name but Columbia would not allow it.
I like this song, it really doesn't sound too much different from what may follow so long, astoria (much to my relief).

i was a huge fan of the old ataris sound and I love this new song. I am kind of glad he changed it up a little. I mean kris has been playng the same music since he was a teenager, of course he is going to want to change it up a little. It's still a catchy song and I really don't see how this sounds like the Killers

I really like this song (http://s46.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0ZNFII6Q7MYXG20IFEWMLZ81X V).
It's definately a change, but I do like it. The Ataris were with me throughout high school, and their sound is changing along with my musical interests, (and my life) so I guess that works out well. I'm glad Kris has some integrity and isn't just making another pop-punk record because everyone wants him to.

how can "the ataris" play old songs with kris sounding like htis. their live shows had so much energy and it was so much fun, but i guess thats killer (pun intended). man im going to miss the pop punk that i absolutely fell in love with. such a shame. but at least this doesnt sound that bad. goodbye san dimas.

I concur. In fact, that's almost exactly what I was going to say. I still love their old stuff, and they're still my favorite band, but the kind of music I listen to now is more akin to the new song.

I'm extremely excited for this release. To everybody who hates because it's not "old" pop-punk Ataris needs to look at it from Kris' point of view. He can't play the same music as a teenager. People mature and change. He's not going to be like Fat Mike and play the same music from 18 to 40.
I really like the new song it's differerent but in a good way. In terms of the new sound, Kris made it known like a year ago that the new songs were going to be way different then anything he had done before so it shouldn't of come as much of a suprise. Also the way he sings in that song is not the same way he sings in the other two demos on the page so that one might be an exception.

i didn't read the other four pages but i'm pretty sure we can all agree they could never write another pop-punk album like "blue skies..." so if you wanna hear ataris at their pop-punk best, listen to that.

Agreed, 99% cause of the killers comparison, but .... a whole different band, whole different sound... and in MY opinion, it sucks.. but whatever, bands changing sounds/members more and more and it saddens me.. oh well, i'll just add them to my list: Blink, Rufio, YC, Finch, TBS...

Yeah and the voice is really different.
Killers rip? I dunno. Maybe a little bit with the voice.
but, i am really surprised nobody got this ... did anyone catch on how that lead guitar into the song that does repeat over and over sounds JUST like "Red Letter Day" by the Get Up Kids.
Go ahead, pull out the record, and listen. Compare and contrast.

honestly, as great of an album as "blue skies" is ... don't you think you'd get tired of hearing the same album over and over and over? and don't you think the band would get tired of making the same album over and over and over?

wow, i love Kris and i have always always loved the Ataris but this put a wow, in a wierd way on my face and about 5 other people in the house i live ins face. For me Blue Skys Broken hearts was such a timeless record and always will be. I am 15 again when i hear that record. I like this song, dont get me wrong, but this is not the Ataris that stole my heart.

It's definitely the beginning, the mark of a new era if you will, for the Ataris. They never really let me down in the past, so I'm stickin' with 'em. This song is jam as fuck.

thumbs up for kris changing things up. there are only so many pop-punk albums you can put out before you get bored with them. this album is a change towards the musical style most of his fans are heading too (at least the early ones). looking forward to the album

that is definitely not true at all.Of course I cannot find the quote now (it may have been on the old phpBB message board, which I cannot find the cached page for), but I thought I remembered him saying that he did want to change the name but Columbia would not allow it, for obvious reasons. He settled into keeping the name by figuring that he always wanted to do music with the band that people would not be expecting, and the idea of releasing something that sounded nothing like their previous work, just to mess with all of the expected ideas of the album's sound, was nice and fell under what he wanted to do with the band.

Quotes from the last time I talked to Kris about the album:
“It’s not like we’re making some crazy off-the-wall ensemble. We’re making a really heartfelt record that will speak to a wider array of people.”
“I love some of the power-pop bands of the early '90s and late '80s. I love Jawbreaker, Samiam and all the East Coast-based stuff, but I really can’t dig or relate to any of the modern ‘pop-punk’ bands.”
“I’m sure some people aren’t going to get it, but I’m sure that there are going to be a whole lot of new people who have never listened to our band that are going to pick it up and say ‘Wow, this band is something totally different than what I expected or thought.' That to me is really important.”
