View Full Version : Artists Sampling Other Artists

I'm not going to lie, I didn't look around for too long when I was looking to see if there was already a thread about this. So I apologize in advance if this topic has already been tackled.
So the other day I was with my friend and she had heard this song and wanted me to know about it. She said it was a remix of an Imogen Heap song. The song was by Jason DeRulo and is called Whatcha Say. It samples Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek in the chorus.
Here is the song:
Jason DeRulo-Whatcha Say (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8g5raSy8-I)
So me being the sucker for super catchy songs, I went to iTunes after not being able to find anywhere to download it, and purchased it. But the thing that stuck out the most were the reviews for the song, which were all negative, because "Jason DeRulo ruined the reputation of Imogen Heap's Hide and Seek" (not my opinion personally, just quoting a review on itunes).
Now this brought up an interesting topic and argument. Lately I've noticed there has been a trend in hip-hop to sample other artists songs in the chorus or some other part of the song.
So my question is this:
What is your opinion on Artists sampling other Artists songs?
Does it make you hate the song with the samples for sampling the original?
Will it cause you to trash talk the artist for using it and say he/she/they are unoriginal?
And finally, does it ruin the credibility of the original song?
Would love to hear everyone's opinion on this somewhat controversial method in music.
If you want my personal opinion, feel free to ask. I was starting the thread not to share mine and try and force it on anyone, but to see what everyone else's thoughts were.

It made "Ice Ice Baby" possible, therefore I'm in favor of it.

True lol I am for it too. I am just curious of the reasons for people who don't like it when artists do it.

Make Her Say by Kid Cudi is a great track that uses Lady Gaga's Poker Face as the hook. And it sounds fucking great. I like sampling if it is done right

I generally all for it. In most cases it shows respect/compliments a previous artist, can introduce fans into another artist, and allows the sampling artist to re-interpet music from before. A lot of hip-hop uses good sampling, which is made into some sweet beats. I like what that says about those hip-hop artists.

See I agree with you. Most of the songs even sound good. I guess I just don't get what justifies some people to say that the song using the sample ruined the original song and what not. kids these days...

It doesn't ruin anything haha. I don't understand that thought either. It just means that they like the original better. I mean i heard Common Market sample 'Come Together' into a song live once. Does it ruin 'Come Together'? No. I mean i prefer the Beatles original tune myself, but that's one nice tip of the hat from Common Market to the Beatles. Covers are different stories though.

Sampling is fine. It in itself isn't really controversial, it becomes controversial with artists like Girl Talk, who do entire records of samples.

Rhianna sampled Numa Numa by O-zone. Probably never even heard of them.

Wale does this very well.
I like sampling as long as it's done in the right way. I don't like when a song's main redeeming feature is the sample, and that seems to be the case with Watcha Say. Like Flo Rida's latest string of singles have all just borrowed other songs for the choruses. It's not really sampling, but you get what I mean. Pigeon John did it right with Money Back Guarantee (Pixies), MIA did it right with Paper Planes (The Clash), etc.

It may not be your thing, but Girl Talk is done well. As for sampling, most people bash it because they may not like hip hop so if hip hop covers some band they like they feel its insulting. I would have to say its not "kids these days...its more the older crowd who can't let go of the past or get with the times.

Sampling in hip-hop isn't a new trend. It's pretty much how the music began.
On another note, sampling is great, and all genres of music do it. When done well, it can be incredible. When done poorly, it can be just like when anything else is done poorly in music.

In a sense, I think it is damaging to the original song when a segment is used and popularized, and goes unrecognized and without credit amongst millions of listeners. I think sampling has its artistic merits (ie: Idioteque is a song built from samples), but feel it's detrimental and without creativity when sampled purely for hit-making.
Rhianna sampled Numa Numa by O-zone. Probably never even heard of them. Song's called Dragostea Din Tei. ;-)

I was really impressed when I heard that song. Definitely a successful sampling.
It's frequetly done wrong though. And it's overused. YOU SPIN MY HEAD RIGHT ROUND RIGHT ROUND

the kids these days is just a joke. i agree it's the older crowd mainly, but i do hear a lot of younger kids bitching because a band they "found or discovered" (i.e. imogen heap) may get more exposure because Jason DeRulo sampled one of her songs.

Yeah. I get what you're saying. I mean I think it's great for adding something to the song and sometimes give's it a twist.

Girl Talk is amazing. Seeing him at Austin City Limits Music Festival this year.

There's nothing wrong with it if done right. Also, it made the Biggie/Elton John part in Girl Talk's 'Smash Your Head' possible, and just that makes it ok in my books.

I've been sampling a lot lately.
But, it kind of feels like CHEATING, you know? I sampled a band called Carbon Carousel, and also sampled "Cap'n Jazz." They sound pretty good, but I dunno'. I feel like building from the ground up with an instrumental is the way to go. Sampling feels like I'm using a crutch, as good as stuff does sound, haha.
