View Full Version : ABSOLUTExclusive: Pete Wentz Interview Part 2
Jared Kaufman
04/25/06, 05:56 AM
Hopefully you've all read my ABSOLUTExclusive interview (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?t=129876) with Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy (http://www.absolutepunk.net/falloutboy) by now; here's your chance to ask him some follow-up questions based on his answers or questions you felt were missing from the ones I asked. I'll be interviewing him next Thursday, May 4th, so submit your questions in the replies as soon as possible. I'll word them however you phrase them (within due reason).

Pete what's the best part about owning your own record label (imprint)?
- Would you ever consider signing a band that may stray out of the norm from what most people expect a band associated with our community to sound like time signature wise, like The Locust for example?

hah i'm gonna be at that show too!
You basically asked him what he thought of Hellogoodbye burning a FOB poster on stage. It was actually Jenoah that did it, so maybe you could ask him what he thought of that...

"I can't tell you the title yet, but it's gonna further polarize people. You're going to either love it or hate it, because it's a commentary on the scene. It's more conceptual than the last one," Wentz said. "People ask me if I'm worried it's going to be too reactionary, but I think some of the best songs ever written have been reactionary, like [Neil Young's] 'Southern Man' to Bob Dylan's stuff, they were reactionary and amazing."
How do you feel talking about a scene you don't have any part in? Or are you referring to the TRL scene?

When you were last in Manchester, England and you brought Gym Class with you, they got booed (which is an absolute joke, and completely shameful from people who call themselves music fans), and you handled the situation really well, by saying you didnt want people who heckled Gym Class as fans of your band. Do you feel a certain, almost parental, need to look out for your Decaydance bands, and do they turn to you for advice a lot? Perhaps when they scrape their knees....metaphorically speaking.

You talk about how all of these bands approached you wanting to start feuds for publicity's sake, and you never would have it. Despite this, though, there is/was static between you and The Killers, who just happen to be on Island as well. Why should we believe that this isn't bullshit as well?

Do the other members in your band engage in childish antics like what's shown on your dvd? Because I can't imagine Patrick drinking his own piss...
Was there ever a point, where Dirty's ever said, 'Enough is enough'? Seems like he's around just for slapstick comedy. I dont mean to get personal, but he's always with you guys on tour.
With all your exposure on tv and the internet, are there times when you're still unrecognized? And if so, do you breathe out a sigh of relief? Or do you think, "How can they not know who I am?"
i totally forgot which band did it, but has he seen the "make fun of my weiner" picture?

Why do you speak out against the scene so often and so passionately, when it's almost directly responsible for your success? Does the anti-scene-within-scene shtick get tiring?

Dear Mr. Wentz,
Do you do it for the money, the girls, and the fame or because you like music? Will you ever stop preaching about nonsense on stage? Will you ever stop being a pussy and an asshole at once? Will you ever stop writing some cheesy pop songs? Will you admit that "Dance, Dance" is one of the worst songs ever created?

Do you miss playing small fire halls like the Butler Fire hall and Charleroi VFW in front of 12 people? I remember those shows and it seems like the whole connection that Fall Out Boy had with the fans is gone. Do you miss those days or do you feel as if the connection is still just as strong?

I know what you mean, but like.. if I pay to go to one of their shows, I guess it's just a part of the package. You'll probably get a lot of, "well, if you don't like it, ignore it" responses... and that's fine, but I know it's frustrating when the best thing someone can say with that sort of forum is "throw your middle fingers in the air!!11"

How come your band and others like My Chemical Romance have become successful mainstream radio hits while other bands you've toured with, like Midtown, have not enjoyed the same mass exposure? This is not a shot against your band because I think you guys deserve all of the success you've been given, but what would you attribute it to? jared please ask these questions you can rephrase to sound less like a dick or whatever but just ask them.
1. My first question is why is your bass so out of tune everytime you play a show (especially on tv)?
2. In regards to your live show, do you think the critcism fall out boy receives is warrented. And if so don't you feel bad for not being able to replicate the album sound live.
3. I know fall out boy likes being known for energtic shows, but do you ever think people would rather hear the bass notes hit correctly instead of seeing spin kicks?
4. Are you surpised people view you in a negative light, or can you understand that many people see fueds with bands like the killers and continuing drama to be moves a celebrity would make rather than a regular guy you want to be percieved as.
5. You have written many lyrics that reference the scene in a negative sense. Can you understand people who view these kinds of songs as rather pointless. You have said before you want people to be able to be helped by fob songs, but I doubt the average person can relate to a song about a scene.
6. Do you really enjoy the songs you write, if you werent in fob would you enjoy the music - honestly - or do you understand why the majority of your fan base is 14 year old girls?
7. Why did you quit playing hardcore music - would fob ever have the guts to write a hardcore album because many members in the band do enjoy hardcore.
8. Can you comment on musical progression - what i mean is many bands in the "pop punk" genre find themselves maturing to a similar sound. For example, blink 182, the ataris, new found glory, and your band have records that are fan favorites and they are usually the oldest records the band write then a shift occurs where they write slower more vocal heavy songs as they gain a larger fan base and join the major label market. do you understand how this progression can be taken as simply writing songs to appease the most amount of people. Dont you think its interesting that no band signs to a major and then writes an album thats less marketable?

Pete,
Do you believe that whatever allowed you to relate to regular people and write lyrics that speak to them was a product of living a "regular" life? Are you worried that now you've become successful, the experience you write from won't be relatable?
Do you write lyrics knowing that the people they're aimed at would hear them? Does it ever stop you from writing something because there is too much venom in the song and you're don't want to cause more pain?
Do people in your personal life address your lyrics or confront you about the things you write? More to the point: Did the person Take This To Your Grave is about confront you after hearing the record? How do you feel about that record now? Do you wish you would have held back more or unloaded more into your lyrics?

what do you think it is about FUCT that caught the mainstream? i remember when TTTYG came out TBS, NFG, blink and others in the emo/screamo/pop-punk/whatever scene were getting recognition (albeit not as much) from mtv and radio. It actually seems to me that the songs on TTTYG were shorter and hookier (more radio friendly).
also, do you think that sometimes, alot of people arent really listening to the lyrics in your songs...i mean when i hear 'sugar...' of 'dance, dance' on mix 102.9 (the best mix of the 80's, 90's, and today) i laugh at the thought of moms taking their daughters to cheerleading practice in suburbans while hearing 'oh dont mind me im watching you two from the closet, wishing to be the friction in your jeans' or 'i only want sympathy in the form of you crawling into bed with me'

i've got a few questions:
- any plans for another single from the current album? I think it would make sense to release one more while the band is in the studio laying down the new album. and if so, what song will it be for?
- are any of the songs for the new album some of the songs we heard about from the last one, but that never surfaced, or are those being saved for a potential b-sides album?
- how do you deal with being both the most loved and most hated man in this "scene" at the same time? (especially without being a drinker, i think i'd have to be wasted all the time to handle it)
- you said the new album is a commentary on the "scene", but what scene are you actually referring to? is it the fickleness of the music industry in general? or just the pop music/trl scene that have embraced you and made you a huge celebrity for little more than writing a catchy song and being cute? or is it the punk/indie/emo/whatever scene and the way they seem to embrace bands until they reach a certain level of success and then shun them for being too popular and selling out?
- finally, and i asked this question in the straylight run interview thread a few weeks ago, who would you rather have as a friend: a hilarious talking towel who gets high all the time, or a taco that shits ice cream?

"number one with a bullet" is kind of taken from High Fidelity, "the boy with the thorn..." is a Morrissey song, "tell that mick" is from Rushmore, etc. etc. I know Pete basically openly admits to taking these things from other sources, but when I hear him called a great writer it really annoys me. Ask him if he feels he's stealing, plagiarizing, or legitimately being "inspired" by all the crap he uses?

you previously mentioned what your least favorite songs you wrote were. what song are you not pleased with on FUCT? and about the success of your single(s)do you honestly believe that sugar we're going down swinging is a better song then say...sophmore slump?
it's obvious most people prefer take this to your grave over from under the cork tree. do you think you'll ever get that kind of success again? and not the radio play kind of success.
you know that you lost a lot of fans. claiming that they weren't true fans isn't really accurate, because they went to see your band in a shitty venue when the rest of the world had no fucking clue who you were. do you at all miss that kind of closeness? because to deny it is absolutely ridiculous.
do you ever miss small shows? and not just playing them but being a part of them. you obviously can't just walk into a venue anymore and hang out. how do you keep at all close with that aspect of your music?
the scene made you what you are. why do you bash it so much?
you grew up in the scene...going to shows, just being in chicago, etc. there had to have been a band that got really big that you had listened to. how did you feel towards them? do you understand the feelings towards you because of it? bottom line: if you were in an old fan of your's shoes right now, watching this band go from nothing to huge rapidly, would you shun them? honestly.

Q1 - do you remember back when GTA (where's your boy) was the #1 played video over at radiotakeover.com? is the feeling you got then comparable to that of hitting the top of TRL and the billboard charts?
also, do you think that sometimes, alot of people arent really listening to the lyrics in your songs...i mean when i hear 'sugar...' of 'dance, dance' on mix 102.9 (the best mix of the 80's, 90's, and today) i laugh at the thought of moms taking their daughters to cheerleading practice in suburbans while hearing 'oh dont mind me im watching you two from the closet, wishing to be the friction in your jeans' or 'i only want sympathy in the form of you crawling into bed with me'
SECONDED!
and in relation to that, Q2- ive heard rumors of Sophomore Slump for a next release, don't you think is more of a sacred-to-the-true-fans kind of song than one to be a radio single? that song seems to really mean something in terms of the lyrics, and would almost be wasted on casual fans who dont even seem to listen to the words.
Q3 - what's with this B-sides album ??!?!?! you talk about it so often, yet we hear nothing of its preparation/release/true existence. whats going on? is FOB to busy / is it Island?
Q4- since Cland.Ind has become all fucking fashionista hardXcore, will there be another line or something for kids to actually afford?
Q5 - with all the FOB boys' seeming obsession with the hiphop culture, can we look forward to some rap in addition to screaming on the next album? :D
Q6- i know your hair is NOT that straight, will you ever let it out of its gelled misery? a 'fro maybe? heh
Q7 - do you know anything about a band called Endever or is this just some bad rumor?
Will you ever stop writing some cheesy pop songs?
Patrick mostly writes the songs, musically. go whine at him.

Pete, why does Fall Out Boy never do a Canadian tour? You really need to come to more cities that aren't Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver. Like Winnipeg for instance.

I'm not trying to be an "elitist" asshole, nor am I trying to reinvent the wheel on a dead (and tired) argument, but this just ticks me off. Get off your asses and research the music you claim to like.

What do you say to the kids who want Patrick to start co-writing lyrics again? What was different about TTTYG as it is now? Is it true that you were just having difficulty with writing lyrics to go to the songs and since he had some melody ideas, that's why he co-wrote them?

I saw the black clouds and underdogs tour in detroit and fall out boy seemed spot on. It was their best performance i've seen of them.
1.) With that said, how does pete respond to the fact that they aren't a great live band?
2.) Who in the 'scene' does he think, specifically, are more about the image than the music?
3.) Also, how does he defend having From First To Last on the tour, when most people view them as more of an image driven band?
4.) Did/does he somewhat regret being so big that they play arena shows, thus causing older fans to resent the band?
5.) What does he think of Tony Brummel's tactics in the business side of music?
6.) I think it was in the Q&A on the FOB website that he said he thought "A little less Sixteen Candles. . ." were the weakest lyrics on the album, [answered by peter on 2006-03-17 13:19:00
honestly we lifted our ideas right from: kung fu hustle and lost boys- we felt like the song could really use a different perspective. personally i felt like the lyrics to that song are my weakest on the record and we wanted to make up for that by bringing a concept that would show a different side of lyrics. the video in some strange way serves as a state of the union of fob. how we all feel, only exaggerated. we know its a wierd one. but hey we have always been kind of wierd. we did not play it safe on this one] if so, why did they put it on the record in place of other songs (Snitches and Talkers Get Stitches and Walkers or The Music or the Misery)?

I was thinking this earlier, and the GCH comment on the front page made me ask:
Does Pete think that if a hip-hop label picked up Gym Class Heroes they would have more success. I mean, you don't ever see them get any hip-hop coverage; unlike say Kanye West who is a rapper that attracts the interests of kids in this music scene. Do you feel at times like they are the oddman out on your label, and how do you handle that when it comes to marketing?

So there's always a moment in people's lives that you never want to forget, for some people it's their first kiss, so Wentz, when was your first kiss? With who? How old were you? Most people say their first kisses are just terrible but be honest was it terrible? It's because you're a terrible kisser isn't it? Yes, I just went there. But really answer the questions.
Out of the entire touring experience, what do you feel is the most important thing for your fans to take away from the show, and what do you feel is the best thing about touring?

1. So why has Fall Out Boy never released "Hand Of God"? I have it, a few more hundred (I doubt thousadn) people have it, it's good, why not release it?
2. Think ahead, 2 years from now, not very far from now, where do you see Fall Out Boy? Where do you see Panic? Honestly, as much as I love panic, I believe they're gonna be forgotten and/or hated like...say Good Charlotte, but that's my opinion
3. I have your house number, your mom is nice, just thought you should know....actually I'm kidding, I have never called...I have it though...how do you feel about that?
4. Joe's mom's name is Katherine huh? If so I have his number also....how do you feel like about that?

ask him why he continues to let himself be on the cover of damn near every teen bop magazine (tiger beat, j-14, etc.) each month and be on the walls of little sisters' bedrooms all across the nation when he could take the a7x and route and not allow it, and help regain credibility for the band many look(ed) to as sincere.

I agree with the person above me. People like you ruin a perfectly good band like FOB. Why do you have phone numbers? That's sick and crazy..I hope that FOB doesn't fall apart because of people like you who take the band and turn it into some sick obsession. They have personal lives they like to keep private-so leave them alone! FOB is one of my absolute favorite bands right now, but I would never try and call any of their houses, talk to their parents, or think asking smart questions is going to get you any closer to the band. I understand that by doing this you think you are getting closer to the band and that makes you feel even more of a fan. But just remember, that borderlines on being a crazy fan which in turn doesn't give you much cred in the fan dept.

Pete is ALWAYS complaining about how "the press only writes about us in three ways", but as far as I can see it, they only represent themselves in three ways. Maybe if you showed a little less penis, a little more "personality", there would be more to report?
When will you stop writing songs about the same thing? Girls and revenge are only fresh for so long.
How do you respond to being called contrived?

This person has clearly never heard of NOFX, Mxpx, blink182.... haha oh well.
i thought of another question for pete- what do you really think of all the fans who hang on to your words so much that they seem to know more about you than some of your friends do? do threads like 'flowers/smiles for peter' or whatever on the fobrock message board actually make you feel better, and even so, does the super-involvement get tedious?
and i second/third/whatever the Gym Class Heroes question, don't you think it would be a little more successful to try to get GCH on more hiphop tours as opposed to 90% pop-rock/'scene'/indie ones?
what do you think of the new signees to FBR? the label will never be the same as the tight family of active bands who were actually all friends as it was a mere 2 or 1&ahalf years ago before FBRamen blew up (which FOB aided of course), what do you think of that?
wow thats horribly worded, sorry :O

So… what I would like to know is, when writing lyrics, does it flow more like pure written words, poems, thoughts on existential survival (laugh) etc. where you then turn it into a “song” or does it manifest in the form of a song with melody intact?
Also just a little side bar on what I like to call human decency… I don’t know Peter Wentz or any of the boys in Fall Out Boy on even a remote level… and really this has little to do with one particulare band per say… however, keeping that in mind, there is a certain amount of decorum that a person, any person, famous or otherwise, should receive for no other reason than the unmistakable truth that they are, in fact, a person. I know, I know… if you can’t stand the heat get out of the kitchen, right? Well this is no baking oven, it’s a firing squad. There they stand gagged and bound while others proceed to gun them down with verbal ammunition. Thick skin or not it’s a difficult place to rest. Something’s bound to hit. Hopefully the barrel never aims in your direction. No one likes the sting of calculated personal attack. Just sayin'.
