Let's do this like the other forums. In this forum name a band you would like to see in this and we'll take the best 16 candidates. Since most bands like TBS and Thursday are Alternative, let's leave bands like that out..let's try and go with more classic rock groups (70's, 80's, early 90's). Here's the bracket:

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/4940/rockforum1yo.jpg

I'll start off by nominating Van Halen.

Band List (Bands we have so far):
1) Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
2) The Who
3) Queen
4) Moody Blues
5) The Rolling Stones
6) ELO
7) Boston
8) Led Zeppelin
9) Pink Floyd
10) The Doors
11) Jimi Hendrix Experience
12) AC/DC
13) Lynard Skynard
14) Neil Young
15) Cream
16) Allman Brothers Band

I just did. They're not considered Rock anyway. Alternative really.

I'm surprised you didn't vote Beatles. They would count.

The Beatles only had one album in the 70's, and it was in 1970. But if I can count them, than they're my nomination, and not The Who. So put me down for the Beatles.

I'll just throw a bunch of bands out there.

The Beatles
The Who
Led Zepplin
Pink Floyd
ELO
The Guess Who
Queen
Boston
Kansas
Steppenwolf
MC5
ACDC
Lynard Skynard
Bob Dylan
The Velvet Underground
Three Dog Night
The Ramones
David Bowie
Bob Marley and the Wailers
The Band
Eric Clapton
Simon and Garfunkal
Van Halen
Badfinger
The Doors
Chicago
Fleetwood Mac
Creedance Clearwater Revival
The Allman Brothers Band
Neil Young
Cat Stevens
Van Morrison
The Rolling Stones
The Moody Blues
The Eagles
The Hollies
The Clash
Aerosmith

I'm not nominating all of these, just making a list of some bands we could choose from. I left alot out, I know. Alot of these might be considered from the 60's, but oh well. The 60's were a great time for music. As I stated, I nominate the Beatles.

they're actually prog rock. i'd accept that they're alternative, but they weren't in that bracket for that tournament.

Can I nominate not Van Halen?

Tyler's list is solid. Pick from that.

But no Eric Clapton, he's a boob when he's solo.

I'll make a list later today, but it should definitely include The Stooges.

EDIT: Shit, and Nirvana.

I was going to say, the Beatles should win this for sure. Good idea to remove them. I really don't think Guns and Roses should be this list, but I guess that's just me. I thought about Nirvana, but then I didn't know if you wanted just bands in the "classic" or "oldie" genres, so I didn't add them.

I would put Nirvana on this list, but there's almost always a fight about what kind of rock they are. It's up to you, would you rather them be on the list or not? I trust you're going to make a good decision so I'm asking you.

yeah add them, i dont know what there would be to fight about what kind of rock they are, plain and simply grunge, now they are starting to get considered more of classic rock though, on my local classic rock radio stations them, pearl jam, soundgarden, all those grunge/rock bands from the early ninties are gettin played more

If it was up to me, I wouldn't. I'd keep this more in the classical and oldies. You originally said 70's, 80's, and early 90's. But I'd remove the 90's from this. So just the 70's and 80's I guess. If we add the 60's there's going to be alot more bands that should be added. So I say just go with what we have already, minus the 90's. I would remove the Allman Brother Band, Tom Petty, Journey, and Lynard Skynard. Haha. I think the Band, the Clash, ELO, and the Moody Blues deserve spots more. But that's just me. I was putting the Clash and The Ramones..but aren't they more Punk? ELO is awesome I can't believe I overlooked that on you're list. And if it's between a band like Allman Brothers and The Clash, I would go with Allman Brothers because that's more like classic rock. But I don't care.

This is looking to be a "classic rock" tourney, which kind of sucks. I think you would want to add The Clash and The Ramones and things like that because you want to represent a wide varieties of still mainstream rock. And The Clash definitely strayed from punk on their later albums. I'll give my top 16 (in order of seeding) as if someone will actually read them:

1) Led Zeppelin
2) David Bowie
3) The Rolling Stones
4) The Velvet Underground
5) Nirvana
6) The Who
7) The Stooges
8) The Clash
9) Sonic Youth
10) Can
11) Bruce Springsteen
12) Talking Heads
13) Pink Floyd
14) Ramones
15) U2
16) The Pixies

Bands that absolutely should not be included:
--- Boston, Kansas, Journey, Styx, etc. -- they were the Nickelbacks of the 70s
--- Van Halen -- virtually the same reason, self-titled is decent, but the rest is a joke, and not funny
--- Guns N Roses -- one good album, that's all
--- Lynyrd Skynyrd -- one good album, that's all
--- The Moody Blues -- they're a singles band, no albums worth anyone's time at all

Even though Van Halen is my favorite band, I wouldn't care taking them off the list only because I really just love Eddie V. The band as a whole is certainly nowhere near the best. I like your choices..except for Sonic Youth and The Clash. The Clash is punk, so we're not using them or The Ramones.

And I'm ALL for putting Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on this list. Should I sub Bruce in for Van Halen?

To be honest, I would fight to get Sonic Youth on the list over any other band I listed. EASILY the best band of the last 20 years and still putting out quality material.

I don't understand why you wouldn't include The Clash or the Ramones. Punk is a subset of rock. You don't seem to mind that Cream is blues-rock or that Lynyrd Skynyrd is Southern Rock. None of those bands are just rock.

And yes, I would substitute Bruce for Van Halen, but it's your tournament.

There's a punk forum for those type of bands, that's the only reason I was leaving them out. Punk is totally different than classic rock. Southern rock is really like classic rock anyway, so I don't know.

Right now, I'll just substitute Bruce for Van Halen, and then we'll get some more input for the other choices.

On your list you still have ELO, Queen, and Boston, all of which are pop bands. We have a pop forum, but that doesn't seem to bother you. Plus, The Clash are far more important to the history of rock than any of those three.

So you're admitting you want this to be a "classic rock" tournament?

I think Queen needs to be on the list. The Pixies were good, but they weren't as influential or as big as Queen. I would switch them. This doesn't have to be a classic rock tourny, and that's why I had the Ramones and the Clash on my list. I also wouldn't put U2 on there, but that might be because I can't stand them. I agree with alot of your adds, especially David Bowie and the Velvet Underground. I think ELO should be on the final list as well.

I never said Queen shouldn't be on the list, but I don't really think they're necessary. Yes, Queen was big, but that should probably be one of the last requirements. I will fervently deny the claim that Queen is more influential than The Pixies. Without The Pixies (and a handful of other bands), alt-rock would not have been popular in the 90s. My main thing is, The Pixies had four "classic" releases (Come on Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, and Bossanova), while Queen only had one (A Night at the Opera).

Yes, maybe Queen had a few more hit singles, but you're also talking about the era. Big and fanciful was popular in the 70s (prime for Queen), while flashy and bubbly was all over pop radio in the late 80s/early 90s.

U2 I think is more of a contender for Best Band of All Time than ELO. Although I also don't like U2, they have more of a stake in the history of music than ELO. 70s bands get waaaay too much credit simply because of Baby Boomer nostalgia.

No, not at all.

70s-00s -- Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
60s-00s -- The Who
70s-90s -- Queen
60s-00s -- Moody Blues
60s-00s -- The Rolling Stones
70s-00s -- ELO

60s-70s -- Jimi Hendrix Experience
70s-00s -- AC/DC
70s-00s -- U2
60s-00s -- Neil Young
60s -- Cream

Every band is from the 60s or 70s. Every one. I mean, I could call for Buddy Holly and the Crickets or Jerry Lee Lewis or Elvis if I wanted, but at least include Sonic Youth or The Pixies or come on, Nirvana.

And some of those bands are absolute garbage (The Moody Blues, Queen) and if your dad didn't like them you'd laugh at them.

Then why don't you just make the list yourself. You know, I did this like every other forum..everyone gets one nomination. I took some of your nominations and I make the list that mostly people voted for and you basically want to put all of the bands you like on there. No, no, no. I'm sorry if I was too harsh. I never meant for you to feel insulted or that I didn't think you were doing a good job. I included the "Yeah, I'm bored and I'm getting irritable" to show that I really don't care what you do to the bracket, but that I just wanted something to occupy my time for the moment and I know I'm being a needless jerk.

To be honest, I won't even participate in it and probably won't even check to see who wins what. This is your idea and you should get the credit and you should be in control. You can tell me "no, you're a fool, those are good bands." It's OK. It's the nature of messageboards. I won't take offense. In fact, I'll probably enjoy it. Nobody's antagonistic anymore.

Do what you want. I've given you all the ideas I have. Incorporate them how you please.

No, they really aren't.

I look forward to the day when our kids listen to Nickelback on the classic rock station and tell us how good they are.

Dude, I don't feel insulted at all. It's just that I listened to some of your suggestions then you told me to change it up again. I want your input because you and theE11_RK are really a big help in this. I want you to honestly tell me which bands you think have to be on this. I agree that The Stooges have to be on this, but I don't know who to take off. There are some bands that are hard to take off, I just need to know who.

I'm sorry I posted like that I just didn't know what to do with this list anymore. This is who I think needs to be on there:

1) Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
2) The Who
3) Queen
4) The Rolling Stones
5) Led Zeppelin
6) ELO
7) David Bowie
8) Pink Floyd
9) The Stooges
10)
11)
12)
13)
14)
15)
16)

Now besides them, what other bands do I put on? This is where I need the help. It's only you and theE11_RK helping me (with like a few other random people) with the suggestions so I'm real greatful for that. Speaking of being greatful, how about the Grateful Dead? Haha I dunno, I'm trying to come up with bands for this.

What I will add though:

If you didn't include some of the bands I listed because you haven't heard them, do yourself a favor and check them out.
Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground are the only ones I haven't heard.

Well that's good to hear. No one should ever be insulted by what someone says on the internet. That's when you know you're taking it too seriously.

To be honest, when I looked at the new list, it didn't look like you even listened to my suggestions at all. I think you added 3 bands (The Boss, U2 (which I had really low on my list), and David Bowie). It basically just felt like you were only including bands that had similar sounds and similar impact on the music industry. Like the tournament was very narrow. Which is why I lashed out a bit.

So there are 7 spots left? I'd probably just fill them with the first 7 on my list that aren't already up there:
The Velvet Underground
Nirvana
The Clash
Sonic Youth
Can
Talking Heads
Ramones

Seems reasonable enough.

Buy (I guess this might be code for download anymore):

Sonic Youth
Sister
Daydream Nation

The Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground & Nico
White Light/White Heat
The Velvet Underground
Loaded

These are essential.

Cool, thanks. I think my dad has a Sonic Youth CD, I remember seeing one somewhere in my house.

You can't start yet! You have to change the seedings! You should swap Queen and The Rolling Stones! This is vital and we must discuss it!

Well I did it randomly on Microsoft word. So it's totally random. I wouldn't put a shitty band. What do you think the seedings should be?

No, no, I was kidding (mocking myself mainly). Yes, please God start the tournament. At least then I'll be able to get out of this chair.
