Steve Jobs has apparently won his long-running battle with the record industry over the 99 cent pricing of songs in the iTunes Music Store.

so what does that mean
It means prices (on iTunes at least) will not get any higher than $.99.

Good for him! Really gained a lot of respect for this guy.

I agree. I think its awesome that you can get one song here and there if you want to. The exclusive EP's and little things here and there they offer. Plus 9.99 for almost every album. pretty good fuggin deal.

When you combine OurTunes with the largest college network in the United States, the whole idea of spending money on music becomes a joke.

This just means that the bands we love are going to continue struggling and pushing for label support and money to live off. It's true that itunes is somewhat of a "light at the end of the tunnel" or whatever, but Steve Jobs is certainly not keeping prices @ 99 cents for the consumers! Haha--it just means that labels and bands won't be able to get any more money for the music they put out. And apple just gets richer, and richer, and richer.

you are just plain wrong...

elaborate?

I mean it, I would love to see a detailed report of how this affects artists instead of how it affects the consumer. And I'd like to hear it from actual artists on labels that use itunes if possible. Because all I hear is "You're wrong" and "Steve Jobs rules!". And whenever I try to find any actual unbiased websites about the goddamned situation, I come up with nothing. It's always "itunes rules!" and "itunes sucks!".

I myself prefer not to participate in the digital onslaught, but I'd love to actually know how much it honestly affects the smaller artist besides the typical "exposure" argument. It seems like an extremely complicated slippery slope to me.

if you read the article, you would know that it isnt itunes that is making him richer from this deal.

what the article forgets to highlights is the negatives behind those other music stores that only charge an $8 subscription fee for unlimited downloads per month. most of them will only let you burn like 3 copies of that song/album. i love apple, and i've bought 2 computers from them in the past year. i've also purchased quite a bit from itunes, and i love it.

i dont think raising the prices of songs on itunes would benefit the artists anymore than it would benefit apple. the labels would suck up that money into their profits, and then if people stopped buying on itunes because of the higher price, the industry would blame it on college students downloading illegally. you know i'm right.

Smaller bands are on smaller labels. Since these smaller labels give out smaller advances, the bands are getting a bigger share of the money then they would if they were on a major.

The major labels are the ones who are pushing for a raise in prices. They want this raise in price so that they can show some profit and therefore have their stock go up. I really don't think that this would help most of the bands we love. It would probably impact newly signed rappers and the rebirth of pop singers and their advances. The money would go to what sells hundreds and hundreds of thousands of records.

I've seen some good reports on legal downloading sites. I'm sorry that i can't remember any specific comparisions or anything, but they all pretty much said that apple was the best for the consumer because It is relatively cheap, easy to use, compatable with the highest selling mp3 player (the iPod), and can be burned up to five times per playlist.

while this isn't exactly a "conversion," you can burn them to a cd, then rip them to mp3. that's what i did with the songs i got off of there.

oh yeah, steve jobs: 1, record execs: 0. fuck you record industry.
