View Full Version : The Future of Music: AP.net? Wink.

If you're into music at all or interested in getting into the music industry, then it should be a prerequisite that you read The Future of Music (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0876390599/sr=8-1/qid=1146249864/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-5924066-0744637?%5Fencoding=UTF8) by Dave Kusek and Gerd Leonhard. You can grab one on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0876390599/sr=8-1/qid=1146249864/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-5924066-0744637?%5Fencoding=UTF8) for like 10 bucks, and it's better then any community college education courses some of you think you need to take to get "qualified" for the industry. I think am I going to make this book a requirement for all my staff to read, it's hands down the best book I've read on the subject and will probably have a direct influence on what happens to AP.net in the coming years. If you want to do anything in the music industry (and all those out there that already are involved in it) you should have read this book yesterday.
Thank you to Tom for sending this book to me; there's a reason why you manage the best bands in the business.

Donald Passman's All You Need to Know About the Music Business is pretty sweet too
I will buy this. I plan on going to Columbia College of Chicago to major in either graphic design or audio production. I'll probably end up trying to be a journalist for a music magazine or something though, or a band manager. So much I want to do!

It's motivated me and changed my thoughts on AP.net (and the industry) in ways I can't describe. Some of the writing is a little thick, and I think it takes a forward thinking mind - but I haven't been knocked on my ass in a long time. This book did just that.
My favorite line, "The best selling CD of 2004 is blank and recordable."

Just ordered it.
Good man. All the people that keep emailing me telling me they're "music marketing majors" at their local CC need to stop wasting their time and make proactive strides in their education. The best advice I ever heard was from Good Will Hunting, ".. a better education in late fees at your local library .."
PS: You know the guy that sent me the book on a level not many of us do. :) Haha.. yes, "that" Tom.

That guy is nice as hell. I still remember getting a phone call from him and then feeling excited as hell that Brand New's manager knew who I was, haha.
I just ordered it too. Good call Tate.

Something I really shouldn't be poking fun at, but oh well.
Nice, I'll pick this up. Thanks for the recommendation, Jason. Haven't read a good book in that "field" in a while. The last ones I've read were, I highly recommend the first one, Lessig is an exceptional thinker: Lawrence Lessig's Free Culture (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0143034650/sr=1-2/qid=1146251853/ref=pd_bbs_2/104-6265039-2535966?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=books),
William Fischer's Promises to Keep: Technology Law and the Future of Entertainment (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0804750130/sr=1-2/qid=1146251905/ref=sr_1_2/104-6265039-2535966?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=books), and
Joseph Menn's All the Rave: The Rise and Fall of Shawn Fanning's Napster (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0609610937/sr=1-1/qid=1146251962/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-6265039-2535966?%5Fencoding=UTF8&s=books).
If anyone has any other good related recommendations, let me know.

I'm in law school right now (3 more weeks left in the first year, woot!) and am seriously looking into going into entertainment law to represent bands and other artists with their contracts and copyrights and such. I'll definitely be picking this book up to read this summer along with some of the others recommended in this thread. Thanks guys.

i went out and bought it on my break from work tonight.
barnes and noble had only one copy. go me.
ive come to terms with myself and school and realized im only wasting time and money plugging away at a associates degree to transfer to a four year school.
my internship (red light management) and summer job (charlottesville pavilion: artist hospitality and assistant to merch manager) are the greatest learning experiences ive ever had.
