I look over my shoulder and they are gone. I’ve evaded them once more. I stop and draw large lung-fulls of air. I can feel my heart pounding at my chest still. I’ve escaped this time. My legs still burn and my stomach stirs slightly protesting the running. Ah, I still have it, good, it’s all that matters, safe on my firm grip. This information is all I care about, my primary objective. Utmost relevance. I ensure I’m not being followed and surreptitiously make my way to the Bat-Cave (see appendix G).
I’m Jon Quanta and I’m part of a secret underground organization known as Team Discovery Channel. I’m on the atomic theory branch of the organization. Although I’d rather be on the organic chemistry branch, I’ll take what I can get I suppose. The information I hold regards James Chadwick’s alpha particle experiments with light elements. And boy isn’t it exciting, reminds me of my days under the Hutnick administration. Those were the days; we were free to puzzle away at the mysteries of the atom. However, all that changed, the biologists jealous of our superior skills abolished Hutnick in the greatest scientific coup science has ever seen. General Frasier rose to power and made everyone memorize boring chemical pathways. Now, only Team Discovery Channel remains undefeated. We are like a covalent bond, strong and sharing a pair of electrons, except we share other stuff instead of electrons, like test tubes and a deep, black hatred for biology.
I hold the discoveries of James Chadwick in this sweet backpack I bought at West-49 (see appendix C). Chadwick (see appendix E) made an important discovery to nuclear science, more important than Xbox (see appendix B). He discovered a particle known as the neutron (see appendix F). The neutron is not to be confused with Omegatron (see appendix D) or Cybertron (see appendix A) or any other transformer action figures that end in “on” and transform into random vehicles like fire trucks or jet fighters. It is important to note that the neutron is an uncharged particle. Since it is uncharged, it is logical to call it neutral. Now you see why it is called a neutron, because it is neutral. Neutral. Like Switzerland during a world conflict. Furthermore, the neutron is located in the nucleus of the atom much in the same a way a marble inside an apple. Such a significant discovery did not go unnoticed; in 1955 Chadwick nabbed the Nobel Prize for Physics. He felt accomplished, like one who passes a test on organic chemistry, something I’ve yet to experience. Chadwick is so cool that when he learned that German scientist Hans Falkenhagen had discovered the neutron at the same time, he offered to share the Nobel Prize with him. Falkenhagen, however, modestly refused the honour. Falkenhagen refused because although he did find the neutron, he was afraid to publish his results. One can assume that since he was shy to publish his results, he was also shy around girls. All the same, some girls are only trouble and can affect one’s concentration in chemistry class, specially in grade 12 university chemistry.
Chadwick worked with Ernest Rutherford studying how atoms turned into other atoms when hit by alpha particles, or the nucleus (center, think the center of an apple) of a Helium atom. After the atoms were hit by alpha particles, the mass of the hit atom was compared to the mass of the same element that wasn’t hit by alpha particles. The masses were not the same. So Chawick reasoned that the nucleus contained protons and another, heavy, uncharged particle; the neutron. One use for the Neutron is the taking apart of other atoms. Because neutrons have no charge, they are not affected by any electric barrier so they are able of profound penetration and splitting the nucleus of heavy atoms. This can be compared to an underage grade 12 chemistry student going to the bar without an proper identification. The bar is the nucleus, when the student goes to the bar on Friday night, he is not allowed to enter. This student is like a charged particle trying to penetrate the center of a heavy atom. However, a grade 12 student who is 19 and goes to the same bar is allowed to enter because he has proper indetification. This student is like a neutron because it can enter the bar with no problem. Elder is not either of those students because he stays home doing chemistry homework during the weekend.
Also, the discovery of the neutron helped develop the atomic bomb since neutrons could be used to hit Uranium. Chadwick was even involved in the Manhattan Project. And now, those wretched biologists shall have vindication, the nuclear kind. Desperate times call for desperate measures. Team Discovery Channel will be using James Chadwick’s discovery of the neutron to send those crazed biologists into radioactive oblivion.
