Every You – A Change of Scene EP
Record Label: Unsigned
Release Date: Late Summer 2009

“You’ve got your hands around my neck / And this mattress is our canvas / Where we spill our guts / So we can stand this” are actual lyrics from the A Change of Scene EP. The image swirling around my brain is both disgusting and endearing. You’re savvy enough, so it seems redundant to point out that such a line must be delivered in just the right way. Otherwise it comes across like every emo cliché we see on local Midwest newscasts. Matt Burns and Co. deftly maneuver themselves right around all these trite minefields with orgcore-ish vocals and a nice little stutter step from drummer Danny Butler. This scenario comes up time and time again for Every You, and they always seem to make their less than original formula more than just somewhat interesting. Don’t feign snobbishness; we can all hear your toe tapping from here.

Not that you care, but Every You are inking a record deal right this second. A Tweet is being prepared as you pretend to read this while only looking at the score: “Hot Bobby Jones we don’t have to wear Rockitt T-Shirts anymore! Thanks Hopeless Records!” In fact, that Tweet (what’s the past tense of Tweet?) could be this whole review. Every You’s rougher version of pop-punk uses the melodic personal insights of The Dangerous Summer and the louder personal insights of Fallen From The Sky to forge a path just interesting enough to work. But like I say, you won’t ever feel lost. “A Change of Scene” pumps through in a radio-friendly shell until the gang vocals catch you off guard. “Piece of My Mind” is a bit more, ahem, thoughtful with lyrics like, “Wherever you may be / I fucking hope you’re listening.” Sounds pretty familiar, right?

And there I go again, making A Change of Scene sound terrible because it resembles something else. (For Christ’s sake, who am I to talk?) We all read constant lists toting that someone is “For Fans Of” or “Recommended If You Like” and they’re almost always crap. Feel confident in your decision to give Every You a chance if Just Surrender or The Dangerous Summer leave pleasant tastes in your mouth. “Homesick” uses the youthful moments of those bands in a little sloppier fashion, but that also makes it more sincere. If you’re 21 or younger (or if you have Asperger’s – kidding, FCC!), welcome to your life. Or rather, this is music for looking in the mirror. Don’t be embarrassed: we all do a little amateur modeling. It’s okay to take a glance here and there, but be warned if A Change of Scene is on in the background, because you’ll be planted for the whole 20 minutes. At least make sure you’re alone first.

Recommended If You Like: The Dangerous Summer, Just Surrender, what am i even talking about, You Me and Everyone We Know, *slap*

It's a decent ep, sounds like they just started out...kind of reminds me of The Starting Lines "With Hopes..." EP. Lots of potential for these guys, I hope they keep it going...

Just checked this band out.. liking what I hear. It sounds like a sound that can be developed really well? Dunno if that makes sense, but basically, I think they have potential

One of my favorite EPs of the year. Definitely sounds like a Dangerous Summer, Polar Bear Club lovechild. Which is a good thing.

We seem to be known more for that than sounding like The Dangerous Summer

Ha ha, being compared to The Dangerous Summer is a good thing (and if it makes you feel any better, they're tired of hearing everyone tell them they sound like The Starting Line).

I really enjoyed this EP a lot, yeah they could have some improvements but for a band that is still very new to the scene the show major potential and since this EP they came out with 3 demo songs that do show a lot better symmetry. Great review as well, I like the lyric references.

I thought this EP was great, a little rough around the edges but they are currently working on their first full length and I think it will definitely put them "up there" on the who to listen to in 2012 bands... I know it will for me. Maybe it's because The Dangerous Summer is my favorite band, but I don't know. These guys are a little more intense sounding than them and the 3 singles they released after this EP are much more well executed than the before work. Check 'em out!
