The following is a mini interview of generic questions that we posed to all bands that wanted to answer:
Rosaline - (Nate Steinheimer)[myspace (http://www.myspace.com/rosaline)][ap.net profile (http://www.absolutepunk.net/artists/showlink.php?l=21192)]
1. How did you get your band name?
The name comes from Shakespeare’s tragedy “Romeo & Juliet.” Rosaline was the girl Romeo was unrequitedly in love with before he met Juliet. At the time of Rosaline’s birth, we were all watching the movie, and it just seemed right. It would be a famously tragic and moving display of human emotion in literature taken and continued aurally. Not officially of course, but maybe that’s why it seemed right. Rosaline has never really been a “light” band, musically or emotionally. We’ve never really been afraid to be moving. And while we’re on the subject of the name Rosaline, I’d like to definitely point out that the official and original spelling, as written by Shakespeare, is Rosaline (some people spell it differently).
2. How did this band get started?
We formed the way most bands do, a bunch of kids in high school who weren't any good at sports and who weren't that cool, so we just played music instead. You have to understand though, Rosaline didn’t form in a typical town. Naperville, Illinois: our original stomping grounds, is the most homogeneous, main stream, suburban utopia you could imagine. Going against the grain took an extra effort, but a lot of kids were looking for an escape at the time. We tried to help to carve that alternative path in a textbook town. Rosaline has been around since we were all young and has grown into a formidable musical force since then. Like all bands, it has evolved and evolved. We started originally in 2005 as sophomores in high school but the lineup, locations and situations have changed several times since then. The exact details of how Rosaline came to be are boring in comparison to what it's all about now.
3. What bands are you influenced by?
Rosaline has gone through a literal journey of change in sound and inspiration. We are really versatile musicians, I think that may be part of what sets us apart. We draw influence from all ends of the spectrum, from bands like radiohead, the appleseed cast and sigur ros to bands like thursday, hopesfall and the bled. I’d say that the early melodic post hardcore movement, like the Pass the Flask and The Changing of Times albums definitely influenced us in the earlier years. When you’re in a band with six people, influences are literally endless. I loved Thursday as a kid, that’s the first band that got me interested in playing emotionally intense music.
Hopesfall – The Satellite Years
Thursday – Full Collapse
The Bled – Pass the Flask
Underoath – The Changing Of Times
4. If you could tour with any bands, past or present, who would it be and why?
Definitely the ones listed above, without question.
5. If you were a furry, what animal would you be? Why that animal?
A lambgoat. Because they are the most clever and spiteful failed musicians you will ever find.
6. Why should people listen to your band?
Because we play really intense, authentic music.
7. If you were chosen to be in Guitar Hero/Rock Band, what song would you want in the game? How hard do you think it would be to five-star on expert?
Probably the song "Culture Wars" off the new album. It's got some cool stuff in there, it might be tough.
8. If you won a Grammy, who would you thank?
Kanye, for interrupting/not interrupting.
9. If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
I'd cut out the middle man.
10. Memorable tour experience?
Losing my mind and my girl.
11. What does AP.net mean to you?
Alternativepress.network
12. What is your favorite song to play?
Probably one of our older songs. "Angel Wings" is definitely up there.
13. What is your vacation spot of choice?
Cancun, Mexico
14. What music reminds you of your childhood?
Billy Joel, Queen, Celine Dion......
15. If you could have any super power, what would it be? Why?
Being two places at once. Or flying, but I guess that's pretty generic. Either way there's just so many things I want to accomplish that my schedule just doesn't allow, and one of those might help.
16. Do you feel that your band has "made it"?
Definitely not. But we have been fortunate enough to be able to work with some great people at Eulogy and produce music that affects people. I'm not exactly sure what "making it" in the music industry really means to me let alone anyone else, so it makes this question really hard to answer.
17. What is something that most fans don't know about you?
We care about our lives, just not what happens in them.
18. What's your favorite holiday?
Maybe Halloween. I don't really like dressing up or anything, but Fall is my favorite time of year.
19. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Cooking, watching movies, running.
20. What kind of hidden talents do you have?
As a whole, this band is almost always completely serious and focused when it comes to music. With every other facet of life however, we're pretty detached. I'm not sure if that's a talent or a character flaw.
