right now I'm using a Micro Cube lol. I've been playing for almost 2 years, and I just want something that sounds better, and that can play over drums (not actually gigging yet)
Looking for something around $400 / $500
I'll be playing bands like
blink-182
Lydia
The Starting Line
Moneen
Death Cab for Cutie
Bright Eyes (mostly acoustic)
Circa Survive
Thursday
A Love Like Pi
Tigers Jaw
Any suggestions? thanks
Oh, and my guitar I'm using is a Tom DeLonge strat

i love my cube30x. but, if you find something that gives you all those sounds out of the box let me know, i'd be interested.

If you're just looking for something as an upgrade, i plugged into a B-52 amp at guitar center - they're cheap tube amps. they don't sound bad at all. And you'd get a tube amp with some features like reverb... Basically they sound like mesa boogies, in my opinion. You'll get a good crunch.
Since you haven't been playing for a super long time, i'd definitely say you're in the right ball-park in terms of $$$. Eventually you'll want a serious amplifier though. It's never too early to buy a nice tube amp... marshalls, mesas, fenders, etc. They're the basis for your sound moreso than your guitar or your effects pedals.
If you had a little more to spend, I think hughes and kettner makes a decent cheap tube amp too. Those amps are so underrated.

a vox or a fender would be good. Depending how you use it, which you're gonna be playing over drums and gigging, so over 50 watts.
The fender frontman series is really nice. my friend has one, and I'm probably gonna be buying one this weekend. Or a 100w vox solidstate would be good. Just go to guitar center, mess around with some, and then make your decision.

If you are willing to spend a little more and go the head/cab route rather than combo, check out my suggestions at http://www.rawkandrowl.com/?p=230
