In another thread, the subject was who has the best lyrical content in regards to emo based music. Reading and hearing Saves The Day's "Sound The Alarm" has brought up this question.
Since In Reverie, what has Chris Conley been through? These lyrics are more morbid then the rest of STD's catalogue. If I was a friend of Chris' I would keep a close eye on him..
There must be something wrong with me.
I get so tired, I can't sleep.
The voices in my head are haunting my dreams.
No matter how I try,
To kill the thoughts inside.
I cannot, I cannot, hide.
-Don't Know Why
I'm a danger to myself
always blaming someone else
got a grenade in my mouth
and my finger on the pin ready to rip it out.
-The End
I'm living in a dark and dying day
And everything is lost along the way
the feeling in my heart is not the same
so what's to say?
-Dying Day
My heart is burning black
My bones are cold and cracked
The venom flushed out my veins
And if you ever knew what I'm dreaming of
You would head for the hills
-Head For The Hills
Please, help me, please
I let my heart go
I'm dead, I'm diseased
I'll drain my life of sorrow
-Diseased
Somehow feel someone's stare
turn around nobody there
never knowing if I'm all alone
cause paranoia is the only friend that I know
and everybody else is gone
their eyes are burning into my heart
fall and feeling fear I can't go on
and nobody will sound the alarm
-Sound The Alarm
Every song has a reference to suicide or feeling depressed or feeling like he wants to commit homocide. It's made for a great record, great lyrics, and one of my favorites of 2006 so far.

Speaking of Sound The Alarm, what is everyone's favorite one line from this cd?

He most definitely has depression. I had it for a good portion of this year and I feel I'm coming out of it now. Some lyrics I wrote during that span make me cringe now.

He's an incredible lyricist. His descriptions just go beyond what you can imagine for any situation and he digs his nails in it and picks the most murderous remnants. Great album and I'm glad it was how it was. Stay What You Are, In Reverie, and Sound the Alarm are sooo different from each other and that's what I love about them. His depression has gone way beyond toying with the usuals of growing up in say Freakish and All I'm Losing Is Me. Just wow.

That's a good honest reply and a good suggestion.
I struggled with depression during a span of my life. It was a hard time for me as well.

I agree with you on that one. Sound The Alarm is so in depth, it's unreal.

I'm still unsure on how he feels about In Reverie.
But they have fun touring, as you said. They always have.

I'd be swinging in the area of Pop Punk. If they're not, why would you have done a battle between them and Hit The Lights?

theyve always had some graphic lyrics, but never the whole way through like in sound the alarm. and usually chris is talking about someone else, not himself. i.e. my sweet fracture, rocks tonic, and as your ghost takes flight.

If you think wikipedia is correct on everything, you're dumb. It's set up by other people, most of which have no idea what the fuck they are talking about, kind of like you. I don't want to be mean, but there is no way saves the day are emo.

man, i knew i was gonna get shit for that wikapedia comment!
but you made a good point .. really? wikapedia is info based on its users input! kinda of like THIS MESSAGE BOARD!!!! .. so when someone asks whether or not saves the day is "emo" isn't better to find out from a site that was made up of info from people that where big into emo when it first started or from a bunch of kids that were probably still riding their bikes to their local playgrounds when "through being cool came out" ??? (not to offend anyones age)

this is my album of the year by FAR.
"I feel like swallowing my eyes" is my favorite line. :D
and i wouldn't call Saves The Day "emo." "Emotional pop rock"? Yes. They fall into the same category as Jimmy Eat World and Midtown for me. (see sig, heh).

"Forget What You Know" is also one of my all-time favorites. if you don't have it already, you should check it out.
i never got in to "living well is the best revenge", unfortunately. but others did, so you may like it as well.

i think "sound the alarm" was a logical next step in chris's growth as a lyricist. the once-commonplace offhand mentions of spleens and cavity searches are gone. he seems to be done fucking around- he's more to the point now.
rather than painting huge pictures to take a small or simple idea (e.g. i saw some weird stuff on the train) and build a whole song around it, the content really does the talking now. i think the new stuff is uber-powerful.

you guys are looking at emo in a modern context, like calling saves the day emo means they're like dashboard, or hawthorne heights or some shit. saves the day were at the forefront of young emo bands back in 99, before there was a negative connotation associated with it... everyone, chill the fuck out about genres. just because a band is "emo" doesn't mean HS kids love them and they wear eyeliner. saves the day have been around for a long-ass time and they're definitely not a "pop-punk" band.

listen to this man. he knows what he's talking about.
Saves the Day is emo, in the original context. Neither Hawthorne Heights nor Dashboard Confessional nor Fall Out Boy are 'emo' by the original context. Jimmy Eat World is. And other than those 2, there are very few other active bands that could be considered 'emo'.

oh, and btw i think the whole "emo image" thing is over-analyzed and bullshit. emo doesn't mean "cutting" or "eyeliner" or "goth".
it means EMOtional, witch, last time i checked, was a GOOD thing in music. i'd rather my music be sung/played emotionally than UNemotionally any day. music needs feeling, without feeling everything would be flat and boring.
so yea... there you have it.

how about we just call them rock (the most broad genre) and get it over with. get back on topic.
sound the alarm is alright to me, but through being cool has the best lyrical content.

Saves the Day is a rock/pop punk band. The only connection they have with emo is that they originally ripped off Lifetime and Lifetime is somewhat influenced by emo.

i was thinking the same thing when i read that post about him not liking saves the day after SWYA...every STD album is good in my mind...just in reverie wasnt AS good as the others...it grew on me. i hated IR when it first came out, but i love it now. Through Being Cool will always be the best one.
