View Full Version : What is the best comedy?
Indoor Living

So, I was posting in the It's Always Sunny thread a few days back, and I was reading a pretty intense argument between some people, and from what I caught, it was discussing out of Seinfeld, Curb, It's Always Sunny, and Arrested Development, which is the funniest? So I figured, why not, I'll throw a poll out there, based off the success of my Arrested Development poll, this one should get some pretty good feedback.
So without further ado, I give you the four funniest TV shows of all time. According to the It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia Official Thread.

My vote goes to Seinfeld. Without it, none of the other three would be as funny as they are/were, or maybe never even created.

although I agree with the second part of your statement, I feel Arrested Development is a funnier show than Seinfeld is, but nowhere near as revolutionary for TV comedy.

Seinfeld obviously opened up doors for a lot of these, but I gotta go Always Sunny. It just produces some of the most absurdly hilarious plot lines. The bottom on this one for me was easily Curb. It really plays like a watered down version of seinfeld. I've really never seen the appeal.

Did you ever watch much of their last season? I believe if more people did, then more votes would go to Seinfeld than there already are. They started hitting their prime so well, and their 9th season produced the funniest dialogue and storylines I've ever seen on television before. If they would've gone one more season, they would've ended on an Emmy-winning note.

And voting Seinfeld just because it "caused" the others to happen is the most ridiculous reason. Same for why you like bands.

no, he's right. voting for something, whether its a movie/tv show/band/etc..., JUST because it influenced others doesn't mean it's the best.
my choice is seinfeld, but that's just because it's my favorite out of the four. AD is close behind thouhg.

Alright, sorry. Let me rephrase myself. Most of the time, what Klinkhammer said is correct. For most bands, TV shows, etc. it is. In this, though, it's a different story. Seinfeld re-invented, and sometimes, I even think invented the sitcom as we know it. What they did was revolutionary for TV history, and that's why TV Guide ranked it the number one show of all time. I accept your opinion, I'm not trying to spark a violent argument here, I'm just saying what I think. Never has anything been influenced by anything else like the modern sitcom has been by Seinfeld. That show really set the standard, created the mold of how to make something really truly funny, and I believe that most modern comedies that are on the same level of humor have to give a lot of credit to Seinfeld.

i completely agree with you, except that just because someone/something is the first of its kind or creator of something doesn't make them the best automatically.

Also a good point. Just because At The Drive-In created Mars Volta and Sparta, doesn't make it the best band out of the 3. I have nothing to back this point up, and it's a terrible analogy, but it's the first thing I thought of. I guess the reason I'm trying so hard to back this up, is, to this point, I haven't seen anything that beats Seinfeld yet, so I guess I do think it is the best.

Voted for Arrested Development, but I could argue that Seinfeld is better because there are 180 episodes, versus the 53 of AD... and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia is the funniest sitcom currently on TV. All-in-all this is a very good poll.

Your avatar automatically makes you awesome. "Taked baby. Meet at later bar. Night or day sometime." Just imagine if AD made it to 9 seasons. It's sad because they were still getting better and better when they got canceled. Their third season was by far the funniest. Such a shame. I agree with the Always Sunny statement wholeheartedly. Such a great show, McElhenney is a genius. Thank you, I believe it's a good poll as well.

Arrested Development. Without a doubt. Sunny is in second (out of the four choices). Seinfeld & Enthusiasm aren't even on the bottom of the bottom of the list. I fucking hate both of those shows. I'd rather stab myself with a rusty screwdriver. In the liver. Then the ears so I don't have to hear Jerry's voice. Finally the eyes.
Scrubs in reality, would be my second choice. Then I'm torn between The Office (2nd and 3rd season cause the newer ones, aren't all that), Weeds (First 3 seasons, 4th & 5th were decent but not amazing), Chuck, Californication, & Rescue Me. They all take third place. I really can't rank them.

I believe that they were just finally starting to like fine-tune everything that made it funny by the third season. The jokes were becoming a lot more efficient and there was no filler.
Scrubs, to me, seems forced, a lot of the time. They try too hard to make wacky, over-the-top bits funny. It's just not for me.

No filler? That whole MR F scenario went on for wayyyy too long. I think the beginning and end of Season 3 had the best episodes, and the middle of Season 3 had the worst of the whole series.

It was my favorite show like 3/4 years ago. But i gave it a rest and when i came back to it, it seemed kinda lazy like. It seemed a little trite and hackneyed. although it is operating in the traditional sitcom format, which non of these other shows besides Seinfeld are, and it is a little self aware which can be funny. I think there is always a part of me that will love this show.
But if you like stupid humor I would totally recommend Always Sunny. I think that and all of these shows developed their own sense of humor.
But I mean my favorite show of all time is Stella, which I doubt many people would agree with.
