im bored, we're doing this.
- Now that the oscars are expanding their best picture to 10 nominees, we're going to start to see some blockbusters in the running. Of COURSE! most Best picture movies havent even come out yet. But just for fun here's a list of the 10 movies that would/could be nominated...just like NFL power rankings, which mean nothing, here's what I think would be the 10 nominees now. Im trying to be un-bias, as there are some movies here that I didnt even like.
1) Hurt Locker
2) Moon
3) Inglorious Bastards
4) State of Play
5) Departures
6) UP
7) 500 Days of Summer
8) District 9
9) Ponyo
10) Sunshine Cleaning
missing cut
11) Star Trek
12) Food. Inc
13) Cove
14) Julie and Julia
15) Harry Potter
16) Drag Me to hell.
17) Informant.
thats all I got. I guarantee 85% of the top 10 as of now wont be there come march, but again this is for fun.

I think Inglourious Basterds should be nominated
I could list my ten favorite movies of the year thus far but I know that most of them have no chance in hell of being nominated
I think Inglourious Basterds might actually get nominated. If 500 Days does, then the world is a good place

As of right now, I'd say, judging by critical reactions:
- Hurt Locker
- Star Trek
- Coraline
- District 9
- Inglorious Basterds
- Ponyo
- Up!
- In The Loop
- Harry Potter
- Possibly a documentary (Tyson or Anvil!: The Story of Anvi, The Cove)
I'd say Up! and The Hurt Locker are shoe-ins. "In The Loop" might have a chance since there's usually a screwy comedy that makes it in,. The rest are anyone's game.
I'd say the race looks like this-
Up In The Air
The Lovely Bones
A Serious Man
Invictus
Precious
Inglourious Basterds
The Hurt Locker
An Education
The Damned United
Nine
Up
(500) Days of Summer

I haven't seen all of these, but they are some that think (or want to) will be nominated:
Inglourious Basterds
Up in the Air
The Hurt Locker
Up
A Serious Man
A Single Man
and that's all I've got.
But, I must say that I'm pretty stoked that three women (Jane Campion, Kathryn Bigelow, Lone Scherfig) are being talked about quite a bit for a best director nomination.
Why HP? That movie was garbage.
Moon deserves it though.

My best guess at the moment:
The Hurt Locker
Up
Up in the Air
An Education
Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire
Invictus
Nine
The Lovely Bones
The Tree of Life
A Serious Man (I think this has a way better chance than you guys are giving it)
wildcards: A Single Man, Get Low, Avatar, Where the Wild Things Are
Amelia REEKS of All the King's Men syndrome IMO.

My picks
The Hurt Locker
Inglourious Basterds
The Lovely Bones
Invictus
Up In The Air
Nine
Precious
Up
Avatar
An Education
Obviously haven't seen a lot of those, but from what I'm reading, these seem likely. The Road seems like it won't be up there, while A Serious Man is generating a ton of critical and audience praise due to it's appearance at Toronto, so that could be up there too. Really want The Hurt Locker and Basterds, wouldn't mind if Up got dropped, haven't seen anything else. My other favs, 500 Days and Star Trek won't get noms for this, unfortunately.

I forgot to mention Tree of Life and A Single Man because I don't know much about them, but I hear Colin Firth should definitely be getting a best actor nomination for the latter. I don't think Amelia will be up there either.
And I hope you're wrong about Inglourious Basterds.

If you wanted discussion of movies that people have seen, you might as well make a favorite movies of '09 thread. If you make a best picture thread, you're gonna get speculation. There's absolutely no point otherwise. Your original list had maybe three that even have a shot at a nomination.

You want to get REALLY speculative, try to predict the acting races. One I think I have a good bead on is best actor:
Robert Duvall, Get Low
Colin Firth, A Single Man
Geore Clooney, Up in the Air
Daniel Day-Lewis, Nine
Matt Damon, The Informant!
wildcards: Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker), Morgan Freeman (Invictus)

I am usually one who HATES when actors get two nominations in the same year, but if Clooney (Up in the Air, The Men Who Stare at Goats) and Damon (The Informant!, Invictus) do I will be ecstatic. Two unbelievably deserving, consistent, awesome actors.

I tried to do this a few weeks ago, but even then, Robert Duvall was just entering conversation and I had hardly heard any buzz on Colin Firth yet.
I really hope Renner gets a nomination, because I thought he was just excellent, and I think Freeman is as likely as anyone. Damon, Clooney and Lewis seems like virtual locks at this point, but anything could change. Also, I think if The Road gets anything, it will be Viggo Mortenson for actor, so he'd be on my list too.

2. Moon

Indeed. I think 2008 will unquestionably come out on bottom for me, and as for '09 and '07, it just depends on the rest of the year. My favorite film from 2007 was Zodiac, which is still a bit below my current top 2 for this year, so I don't know. I just think it's been an unusually strong year so far, and Oscar season is just beginning.

Best Picture: Hurt Lockers
Best Original Screenplay: Basterds
Best Actor: Sam Rockwell looked amazing from the trailer for Moon, but it never came to my movie theatre.
Best Acrtress: Zooey Deschanel for 500 Days... never gonna happen but I'd love it.
Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Waltz for "Basterds"
Best Supporting Actress: Melanie Laurent for "Basterds"
Cinematography: Where The Wild Things Are.... early prediction. don't care.
Best Animated Film: Up

I still can't believe Zodiac was left out in 2007, such a great film. For me it'll most likely be 2007 2009 2008 (depending on the rest of the year of course but TWBB is one of my favorite films period so it will be hard to top that)

COME ON. Those two don't even make my top 5 from that year.
(these aren't my top 5, I'm leaving personal preference out)
Assassination of Jesse James
Into the Wild
Superbad
Gone Baby Gone
Ratatouille
(and the more "Blockbuster" films that were better than 2008)
No Country
There Will Be Blood
Michael Clayton
The only movie that will have any lasting power from 2008 is Dark Knight (and Iron Man).

The only movie that will have any lasting power from 2008 is Dark Knight (and Iron Man).
I keep being reminded that I need to see Jesse James.
Superbad is ok, but it drags on ridiculously, and there are several comedies from 2009 that are better (The Hangover, 500 Days of Summer). Ratatouille was good, but rather forgettable for me compared to a lot of other Pixar fair. Again, Up is a better film. Into the Wild is great, and I enjoyed Gone Baby Gone, though neither are films I feel compelled to revisit much.
Wait, now I'm confused. Did you think I was arguing 2008 was better than 2007? Because I wasn't. Michael Clayton, No Country, and TWBB are all better than pretty much everything in last years best picture category. I'm not really sure what you're arguing?

I recently watched Superbad again, and it really struck me how ridiculously overlong it is. Some good ideas and good laughs, and there's definitely a reason it was so popular, but there's also more than a few things that didn't need to be in there. So no, I wouldn't call it phenomenal.

Hopefully for next year, I hope Christopher Nolan's Inception is a contender even though I have no idea what its about. Dark Knight was snubbed. As well as Springsteen's "The Wrestler"
The Dark Knight in no way deserved to be considered among the top five films of the year. The fact that most of the five nominated didn't deserve it either doesn't really matter.
And The Wrestler was snubbed in general: should have at very least been nominated for best picture, Rourke should have won, and Springsteen's song was 50 times better than anything in Slumdog.
:-( Loved every second. I thought everything in it set it apart from the quick 1 hour bullshit comedies.
There definitely was a lot that set it apart. The characters were great and more fleshed out than you almost ever seen in a movie like that. Still, there are a few things I could do without.

2007 will (barring some miracle in the next three months) go down as the best year for film this decade in my opinion. Only year I own every best picture nominee from.
I think the fact that TWBB and No Country (the two best films of this decade IMO) both came out that year proves this

For me, The Lord of the Rings wins the decade hands down, in every single way. Nothing else is even close.

I don't have a top 5 of the decade in order, but I could probably pick five. Off the top of my head:
Brokeback Mountain
No Country for Old Men
Lost in Translation
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Traffic

I don't think The Road is very likely.
What makes you think it's unlikely? It's been getting almost unanimously positive reviews so far..
Regardless of whether the film is nominated, Viggo is going to receive a nomination for best actor.
And The Dark Knight will take the title for most overrated film of the decade.
I thought you were arguing both 2009 and 2008 were better than 2007. As of right now I can't say that either of them are, though The Hangover miiiight end up being better than Superbad.

As of right now, yes it's impossible to say whether 2009 will top 2007, as we haven't seen 3/4 of the films that will likely be making up most top ten lists and the best picture nominations. I'd venture to say this year has already topped last year though, as there have been a handful of films that I think are better than anything from last year.

You're right, only one bad review on RT right now, but I just get the feeling it's losing Oscar buzz. It could definitely be nominated, but I doubt it will win. I just can't see it winning best picture.
That said, I agree with you that Mortenson will likely be a frontrunner for actor when the movie finally comes out.

Fair enough. I just don't see how such a "strong" year had 2 of the weakest best picture nominees in recent memory (Atonement and Juno).
Oh man, there's been much worse nominees than "Juno" and "Atonement" - "The Queen" (Let's face it, great performances, but felt like a decent BBC film, at best), "Benjamin Button," "The Reader" (Really, 2008, had two much weaker nominees.) I'm not a huge fan of "Atonement" and thought "Juno" was just fine, but there's been far worse.

There's no way "(500) Days of Summer" will get nominated. It's a solid, fun movie, but it didn't exactly have critics and such going crazy for it. It will get a really good following on DVD and Blu-Ray, but I think that's about far as it will go.

Atonement is a pretty well made film actually (the moving shot on the beach was incredible), but I hate the story/plot too much to enjoy it at all. Still haven't seen The Queen.
I'll agree that The Reader was by far the worst nominee in recent memory. Absolutely horrific film. But Benjamin Button wasn't bad at all, certainly better than the annoying-as-fuck, unfunny, overrated Juno with it's horribly written characters. It's especially bad since Juno got nominated and Zodiac, Into the Wild, and Sweeney Todd didn't (and Jesse James and Diving Bell and the Butterfly I guess, but I still haven't seen those two. Even Knocked Up (which Juno was essentially an unfunny version of) deserved a nomination more. The Reader's nomination ended up snubbing just as many films, so those two are pretty much my top 2 "what the fuck?" nominations for the decade.
Then again, the academy has gotten both the nominees and the winners wrong so many times, it's not even funny. I'd say the worst for me was when Forrest Gump won and best both Pulp Fiction and Shawshank, probably my top 2 films of the 90's.

I see there's about half that like Juno and half that vehemently hate it. I'm in the former - The first 15 minutes are almost unsufferably annoying, but past that, it's mostly a sweet, kind-hearted movie about girl trying to figure out life. Much like Little Miss Sunshine and Ray, I though it was a solid movie that really had no business being nominated for Best Picture.

Fair enough. I just felt the same way about the whole movie that you do about the first 15 minutes. It doesn't help that I absolutely can't stand Ellen Page (thanks to Hard Candy...ugh), and I couldn't believe in any of the characters because of the horrific script. Little Miss Sunshine had 10x the heart and the laughs, and I doubt I'll ever be able to get the picture of them jump starting the winnebago out of my head. Still, you're probably right that that had no business being nominated for best picture. And I just didn't like Ray at all.
Superbad is phenomenal. The Hangover can't touch it - it's all one liners and no substance. Superbad is the story of every guy and his best friend in senior year of high school.
